    Maarten Heilbron which you think is a better camera ? The xt30 or xh1? Especially for video? I have the xt30, but i enjoy shooting handheld video and most of my lenses are vintage ones, I only have the 18-55 Fuji that has ois but even the the video is not super smooth. Also the lack of weather sealing on the xt30 bothers me, do you think it would be worth getting the xh1? Currently it’s almost the same price as the xt30, unfortunately I can’t afford the xt4 I also heard the uhs ii and buffer on the xh1 makes a big difference compared to the xt30

    Another in depth and informative video thanks Maarten. The X-T3 was a noticeable improvement over the X-T2. The X-H1 features a more rugged build and much better shutter mechanism. The X-H2 when it arrives will be Fuji's best ever APSC camera. I'm very impressed as an outsider how Fuji goes about its camera business. Now just address that battery life.

    It's always a pleasure to see this kind of detailed reviews and comparisons, there's not a lot of people doing that on KZread and I appreciate what you do. I actually have a question regarding video capabilities. Is there a notable difference between 8bit and 10bit when color grading? I've seen multiple articles about how it is much better having 10bit to color grade, but considering that I'm looking for a camera to make documentary/short film videos that would be most likely uploaded on this platform, does it even justify spending more? Like purchasing for the X-T4 instead of the X-H1; for some reason I'm just more drawn to the design of the latter even if it doesn't have the latest or greatest implements. Hope you're having a great day.

    Hi Maarten, Great informative vlog as per normal for you. Thanks very much. There’s no doubt that the X-T3 is arguably better spec overall than the X-H1 but I have the X-H1 and wouldn’t swap its IS for the extras of the X-T3. I don’t shoot video so those particular extras are lost on me. On a slightly different tack, I was considering a 24Mpx full frame camera for portrait photography because I love creamy bokeh but I checked myself from chasing ever increasing technology advances. I reckoned my X-H1 APS-C with a slightly longer focal length lens than that of a full frame camera would probably give me the same bokeh. Its going to take a big upgrade now to convince me to change from the X-H1 with good lenses. I’d rather improve my photography by spending more time advancing my creative eye. I suspect there are literally millions of photographers worldwide who are spending much more than they need on cameras but with little real improvement in their photography. I wish you Season’s Greetings.

    I was looking at going mirrorless and have been a Nikon user for years. I thought for sure the Z6 or Z7 would be my next mirrorless. After the Z6 and Z7 reviews I looked at Fuji and narrowed it down to the Fuji X T3. I don't know if other Nikon users agree but if so then Fuji should be more thankful for the Z6 and Z7 than Nikon. It looks great and will be investing in the Fuji system very soon.

    I think Fuji's colour profiles are pretty consistent, particularly across the X-Trans sensor cameras. But, as the cameras now have settings to fine-tune the profiles, no manufacturer has an edge any longer - unless you're the kind of person who only uses the default JPEG settings. If you shoot RAW, or if you care enough to fine-tune the settings, no model or manufacturer has any advantage with regard to colour.

    Awesome video! Would be interested how fast both cameras handle old primes in term of AF speed. As a father of 2 sons I love to shoot my kids in action with primes only. Could I do that with the XH1 and an 35/1.4 or do I have to get the XT3 for that? Right now I am still shooting with my Panasonic GX80 which IBIS I really really love.

  • @MaartenHeilbron

    Dear @Maarten Heilbron , I have seen many of your videos and I liked them all. You have a way to describe things that sounds like I am watching Carl Sagan's Cosmos. Thank you so so much for your effort. By the way, I am a landscape shooter, do not take portrait and most of the time my lens set to infinity focus. I am trying to move from my current APS-C DSLR gear to a mirrorless systems and Fuji seems to have the viable and affordable (including lens) option for me. Now I need your advice on weather I should take X-H1 or X-T3. I have seen all the reviews from other experts and still hanging between two boats. I mean I love the IBIS of X-H1 but why would I ignore the better image quality with new sensor and processor. But again, I hike up mountains and a beefy grip really helps me to keep holding the camera body with the weight balance of the lens. Then again I have seen a lot of people complain about the shutter button of X-H1 is flinzy and really hard to determine the half shutter press. Overall I am really confused. I know I have to take OIS lenses for X-T3 but the 16-55mm doesn't have it and it goes on and on and on. Thank you for reading this and I would be really happy if you just drop a line below.

  • @MaartenHeilbron

    Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. I would take the X-T3, but obviously could be happy with either. It is the improved autofocus system that sways me - but if grip is a consideration, my recommendation is always to choose a camera based on wallet, hand and heart. So if your hand likes the X-H1 better ...

    As always, a very solid comparison. Still a X-T1 user here, what would you recommend upgrading to? I'm not a video guy, apart from a occasional family shot. The X-H1 in Europe is available for around 1100 euro, with grip, a very good deal, even though the grip is not my thing, I rather travel light. The X-T3 is around 1500 euro. How big is the difference in autofocus? Which one would you choose right now if stills are 99% of your work? Or is still worth waiting for a new version of both camera's? In the end I'm still happy with my x-t1. Apart from it's aging autofocus abilities.

    I can't predict what the future will bring in either the form of an X-T4 or X-H2. At the moment, I would get either the X-T2 (or3) or X-H1 over the X-H1 as the focus system saw a marked improvement.

    I watched so many of your videos in the past weeks :) Thanks a lot! Would you say that the X-H1(with 16-80, 10-24, 55-200) is close to a Nikon Z6 regarding image quality for landscape photography (95% daylight)? As someone who still uses a old Nikon D5100 it's so hard to estimate how much the difference between modern APS-C and full frame cameras is - even though I looked at dozens of RAW files :) X-H1 looks and feels so good (only remaining concern is battery life) and the Z6 should be a bit better for landscape (with F4 zoom lenses) but it is just misses that "certain something" :) (btw: you should create a Patreon or paypal account ...)

    A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks. The Z6 does have a full frame sensor, which gives it a few advantages (like better defocussed backgrounds). However, Fujifilm lenses are, for the most part, high quality at lower prices than Z series glass. If you have photographic instincts, you'll definitely enjoy the size and the physical controls of the X-H1 over the Z series. If battery life worries, buy an extra battery or the grip - that's an easy fix. Thanks for the suggestion, however, it feels like a lot of trouble, and I don't like begging. And I'm terrible at sales - kzread.info/dash/bejne/eXyTqJmQiZytmbw.html

    Hi Maarten! I know this is an older video but I've been put on to the x-h1 recently and I've been making various comparisons. First, I was wondering if there's an image quality difference. You'd mentioned a different sensor and processor so I was curious. Second, how does the X-H1 compare to something like a Canon 5D Mark 3? I own the 5D and am considering replacing it because EF lenses are still very expensive with Canon mirrorless buys opting to use adapters rather than purchasing all new glass. I see Fuji also has expensive glass but they also have some more affordable options that don't drastically decrease the image quality. Canon EF lenses have all sorts of looks imo.

  • @MaartenHeilbron

    @MaartenHeilbron

    Жыл бұрын

    If there is a quality difference between these two, it's very minor. They use essentially the same sensor and processor. Using the same lens and photographers with the same skill level the results should be indistinguishable. While it's slightly unfair to compare an APS-C to a full frame sensor, the primary differences (other than size and weight) are in operation and colour management. My preference is for the physical controls of the Fujifilm which don't require a PASM selection before chaining a setting. And although many prefer the Fujifilm simulations (and make recipes to fine tune) the Canon colour management system likely provides a wider range of colour expression. In the hands of a skilled photographer, both can create great images.

    Hi Maartens, thank you for a concise VLog. I appreciate your work, it’s straight to the point regarding the product. For the past 3 weeks I’ve been browsing many vlogs for DSLR recommendations. I even went to our local stores to check Nikon, Sony, and Fuji. I respect Sony, but I made up my mind and will be going for Fujifilm X-T3. I’ve been monitoring the X-Series since they launched X-T1. I wish they(Fujifilm) had included In-body image stabilization on the X-T3. And this I hope it could be done without changing the price bracket. It’s a wish.

  • @MaartenHeilbron

    Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. In body stabilization is no magic solution, or is it the only solution. A monopod, a faster lens or even a flash can provide the same or better improvements in shutter speed or ISO. As for video, there's no camera that has an acceptable stabilization for video - if that's what you're doing, get a good gimbal.

  • @avarmadillo
    @avarmadillo5 жыл бұрын

    Maarten, I'm turning to you with this question because, from my experience, your fuji reviews are the best, and you'll most likely have a good answer to this. Fuji has, indeed, improved IBIS with their lenses. But, you may recall, I shoot only video with third party lenses, and I do experience a problem, even with the 2.0 firmware update. Specifically, when I'm shooting a stationary shot (say about 4 or 5 seconds) and then begin a slow pan often the image I see on the LCD/EVF will slightly delay in moving with my motion, like the image is "stuck" for a fraction of a second, then it will kind of jump to catch up. Now I have to do a little more testing to see if this delay I see on the LCD/EVF results in a problem with the actual video, or if it is only some delay on the screen that really has no effect on the actual recorded image. Also, I've not done a comparison of 3rd party to native Fuji lenses. But since I prefer shooting 3rd party the comparison would only a of secondary concern to me. I know you shoot video MF. I wonder if you've experienced this with either native or 3rd party lenses?

  • @MaartenHeilbron

    Thanks - I appreciate the kind words, as well as your faith in my abilities. The problem with any kind of stabiilzation is that it tries very hard to keep the image steady and constant - which is not what you want in this situation, and why I generally recommend that one turn off stabilization (lens and/or body, mechanical and/or electronic) when using a tripod - or trying to get the effect you'd like. This is an issue that did crop up (sorry) on the X-H1, and the recent firmware release was meant to address this. I only just received my X-H1 back from repair and haven't yet tested that aspect. Hope this helps.

    Yes, it is helpful--and I love this camera; the most artistically rewarding I know of for video. I have checked with others and several said they had the same experience with the IBIS. My own experience was with hand held only---I leave my tripod home most of the time. The debate now is as follows: is this phenomenon seen only on the LCD, or does it actually affect the video? One responder said he does not see the effect on the actual recorded clip--only on the LCD as a momentary delay while shooting. (Even if that's so it's still disconcerting and can throw your timing off). He also suggested to always use the battery grip, always use native batteries, and also shoot with Boost mode--and he also said he could not tell that using the boost mode in video made any significant change in the battery life. (Who cares if it actually solves the issue!?!) As usual, conclusion: more testing is called for. Thanks, as always, for your kind response. @@MaartenHeilbron

    I have the X-T3. Took it on vacation with a prime lens. Video was shaky and holding the camera became painful as it dug into my palm. I had more fun with my Lumix FZ-1000 over the past 4 years. I want a camera with IBIS that takes great photos and videos for vacation and family parties but I do want those photos and that video to stand out so I am willing to spend more on a camera. So, I plan to sell the X-T3 and buy the X-H1 with grip which I will sell so that I can buy a used A7III in a year.

    Maarten - Thank you very much for the video. Very informative. I'm in need to upgrade my Nikon D50 and was looking at XT-3 but my only concern is the lack of IBIS. Not a professional photographer but more on the enthusiast side. Will mainly use the camera for portraits and scenery during travel BUT 4K videos are a great add-on (thus my concern with XT-3). Ratio-wise I would say 70(pictures) - 30(videos) would be my balance. I was also looking at Sony a73 or Z6 but they are on the higher end ($)- now even more confused with x-h1.... I'm looking at the best picture/video out of the box without spending way to much time on software. I would appreciate your feedback. Thank you in advance!

  • @MaartenHeilbron

    @MaartenHeilbron

    5 жыл бұрын

    First, I find in camera stabilization to be only marginally useful. For stills, in some situations it might let you use a slower shutter speed, but both you and your subject have to be pretty still or you will still blur. For video, for a static, well-supported handheld shot, the stabilization will make it look pretty solid - but for true stabilization including movement, you need either a tripod or a gimbal. I think the X-T3 is a great camera, but for your video purposes, the X-T2 is likely just as good. The only reason to take the X-T3 is its superior face detection. Stop looking at other cameras, they'll just confuse you. In the end, you have to buy a camera you can afford, and still leave money for great lenses (don't just buy good). Then you need a camera that fits your hand comfortably. Finally, it should please you - you should like the design, the brand, and you should feel a sense of affection for it, so that you never want to leave it at home. Hope this helps.

    The X-H1 still has some advantages that X-T3 does not. X-H1 has IBIS. X-T3 doesn't. X-H1 has an updated spring suspended shutter assembly design. X-T3 has the traditional shutter assembly design. X-H1 has the sub monitor. X-T3 does not. etc... The X-T3 has some obvious advantages on the X-H1 as well. One isn't better than the other, just different features for different kinds of users. One thing is for sure, the unreleased X-H2 will be a great camera, if it gets X-T3-like auto focus and movie recording options.

    For indoors & low-light and for handhold video shooters IBIS is a king, X-H1 has better ergonomics, I heard that X-T2 / X-H1 have better dynamic range than X-T3 due to lower megapixel sensor although X-T3 over hyped BSI sensor

    I cannot agree with you about stabilization for video - it's not just the X-H1, but it's completely inadequate for video purposes. I'm also afraid that your thoughts about the dynamic range are mis-informed. The dynamic range of the X-T3 is better than most cameras. Thinking that the small discrepancy in megapixel count will make a difference between these two generations of X-Trans sensor is a false assumption.

    @@MaartenHeilbron We agree to disagree. I was writing about low light shooting and handheld video which benefits from IBIS. Fuji tells this not me, here is link - kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZGyKqsmGj6vKibw.html. As for the dynamic range-extra megapixel does reduce dynamic range while adding sharpness. Here is from DPreview- www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm-x-t3/8 I can clearly see that X-T2 while less sharp looks better when exposure pushed 6 stops, and if you compare X-T3 to 4 years old Nikon D7200 then X-T3 is well...is not good. This was already noted by many that X-T3 falls behind in dynamic range...

  • @MaartenHeilbron

    @MaartenHeilbron

    No, in fact, we don't agree at all. Fujifilm's marketing overstates the benefit of stabilization, which is mainly useful for stills. If you would shoot handheld with the camera for five minutes, you'd understand. There may be a very small benefit for a handheld shot if you yourself can be perfectly still, but beyond that, it's not adding any value As for the dynamic range, and thanks for the link, I fear you've mis-read this and failed to note that this refers to the electronic shutter.
