Spent couple of day's with 50 f1 and here are my findings: 1. Sharper then 56 =Yes 2. Color different then 56 = Yes 3. Faster Af then 56 =Yes 4.Shallower D.O.F = No (56 is longer lens). 5. Better build then 56 = Yes 6.Heavier then 56 = Yes (almost double) 7. Can take photos in bright environment wide open = No get 77mm at least 2 stop ND filter if you want to use mechanical shutter 8. Boekeh better then 56= Yes&No too much highlights can cause blooming and in worst cases overlapping causing busy boekeh. 9. Is it worth 1500$ = If you have 56 I would wait till price drop a bit. 10. Is it useful focal length = No it is not 85-ish equivalent it is 75mm so you have to compensate for same framing with your feet or moving subject 11. Is it worth to get it=Yes if you shooting low light without flash, have strength to wear weight and double the budget of 56 f1.2. Be aware it is like 56 f1.2 one trick pony.

I pre-ordered the 50/1.0 and I'll be ditching the 56/1.2 personally. I often shoot in very dimly lit cigar lounges for clients and the 56 suffers in low as well as with the contrast that comes along with cigar smoke. I tend to use the Fuji/35/1.4 & the Mitakon 35/0.95MKII in those situations, but I welcome to ability to use the 50/1.0 as well. I'm pretty set portraiture wise with this lens as well as the 90f2 and the aforementioned lenses. Great work as usual my man!

Thanks for this Reggie. Not sure how I missed it earlier. Nice review. I'll have to wait for a Fuji event where I can test it against my 56mm f1.2. You said you found this sharper than the 56mm f1.2. DP Review I was surprised said that this lens wasn't really sharp until f2.8 (I'm sure you had different copies). The weight for me is concerning, but I used to own the Nikon 85mm f1.4, and that was never an issue. Thanks again for your honest reviews!

This isn’t a scientific sharpness measure. When you use it out in the field for weddigns, the 50mm nails photos a lot more and sharper than the 56. I don’t do reviews for reviews sake. It’s based on real world pro use.

  • @Nathansmithphotography

Reggie Ballesteros please don’t take my comment as a criticism of your methods. I’ve seen several other reviews from reviewers that I highly respect (like yourself), who all said the 50mm f1.0 was a very sharp lens, and most preferred it to the 56mm f1.2. And I find it funny that most OCD pixel peeping lens reviews are conducted shooting on a tripod, and yet most of us in the real world, especially shooting at weddings, rarely if ever use a tripod.

  • @Reggiebphoto

    @Reggiebphoto

    3 жыл бұрын

I’m sure on a tripod the 56 is sharper. But the af hit rate of the 56 is finicky which is why the 50 wide open in practice produces “sharper” images as the ability to hit critical focus in the field is a factor that needs to be accounted for when shooting non-brick wall subjects

Great video Reggie. The 56mm f/1.2 is my absolute favourite lens, and this new 50 improves on everything I've ever wished I could change about it (autofocus, low light performance, weather sealing, slightly wider field of view which I prefer). However I will NOT be purchasing it just yet. I have taken so many fantastic photos with the 56 and it will still be possible to do that even without the latest and greatest. This lens is clearly a stunner, but it's incredibly expensive.

From what I've seen on KZread (which are admittedly compressed videos) the quality is quite similar, if not better for the 56mm.

Reggie, I found your narrative here not at all "disorganized," as you put it, but, rather, a very fair and balanced weighing of the options in a way that might help the legions of photographic equivocators in the cyber community. Thank you for your work on this lens. You obviously love the 1.0. Other fans include Gordon Laing, whose Cameralabs reviews are among the best, and Christopher Frost, who also is quite thorough and can be quite critical in his reviews depending on the nature of the flaws of a lens. Ken Rockwell, a polarizing figure in the photographic world, but whose perspective I appreciate as part of the mix, also is a big fan of the lens. And all three of the aforementioned actually post images of their work! Imagine that! Some other online reviewers are equivocal about the lens, while DP Review oddly named the f1 "Worst Lens of the Year," a designation I found curiously out of step with their earlier review. For my part, I own the 56mm and like it a lot, but, based on the blended reception by online reviewers I trust, including you, I am inclined to sell it in favor of the 1.0. The smoothness of the bokeh and the better focusing sell me and it certainly seems sharp enough wide open. The size and weight won't bother me at all on my XH1 with battery grip. And at a slightly shorter focal length -- 70mm vs. 85mm equivalent -- it actually will fit a better low-light niche in my lens lineup, between the under-appreciated Fuji 23mm f/1.4 and the Nikon 105 f/1.4 on D750.

The AF of 56/1.2 is much better on the X-T4 (I have a X-T3 and a X-T4) which I couldn't believe in the beginning - but it's still no fun to use it... including the wishy-washy aperture ring. In fact, for the moment I know the answer. I’m very happy user of 2 manual lenses in very big aperture, the Mitakon 35/0.95 mk2 and stunning Kamlan 50/1.1 mk2. On the other hand I own the Fuji 50/2 and 16-55/2.8 too. I’m not a professional photographer and I wonder if this investment is really reasonable, except to sell the 3 lenses quoted earlier (not the 16-55) that make the job perfectly. So actually for me the answer would be no. I just sold the 56/1.2 for the same reason to replace it by the 16-55. In fact, I could only advised interesting people to try the Kamlan 50 (mk2 especially) which is amazing for such a small price (and very easy and quick to use with Fuji focus peaking).

I've been toying with the idea of getting this lens. Mainly because of the technical upgrades over the 56. The newer AF motor design is just superior in every way. However, for me the biggest feature is the weather resistance. I like to go into state and national parks to take pictures. 99% of my pictures are outdoors, and I'm not always in the most controlled environments at that. So for me that WR is a peace of mind kind of thing. That's the main reason why I don't own the 56. That being said, I have other lenses that I want to upgrade first. Mainly upgrading my zoom to the 50-140 f2.8. Maybe if I find myself taking portraits of people more and making some form of money then I'd pick this up. This lens for me is definitely worth it, it's just not very high on the list of things I want to buy right now.

However, my work doesn't really require this kind of lens and getting it/lugging it around would be a nuisance. I want it so bad but it doesn't make sense for me. I'm going to stick with my 50mm F2.0, which I like to call the poor man's portrait lens. :) It has a sufficiently wide aperture, super fast AF, weather sealed, and very sharp. I have tested out the 56mm F1.2 and noticed how incredibly slow the AF is. I personally couldn't stand it. despite the stellar image quality. I understand that the extra aperture is useful for professionals, but I also felt sorry for them that they had to put up with the super slow AF. Now the pros can have a portrait lens that also has a fast AF. Slow is a relative term, but the F2 Fuji primes are known for their super fast AF, so the AF on the F1.2 moves like a glacier compared to the AF on the F2.

Where can you find the 56mm f/1.2 new for $849? It's going for $1000 everywhere with authorized dealers.

Nice video Reggie, but this lens is not for me, I have the XF-50mm f/2 and it’s more than enough for an amateur/hobbyist like me, especially since I shoot everything at f/8 (LOL). Have a great weekend and stay safe.

I was going to purchase the f1.0, but I opted to purchase the f1.2 because I already had the f2 and it’s a really good lens and I love the size. I didn’t think that it would make sense for me to have the f2 and the f1.0. And the autofocus issues that the f1.2 has is do to the step motor instead of linear motor that’s in the f1.0. I have found that single point focus works a little bit better than relying on face and eye detection when using the f1.2

Yup I never use eye af with the 56 1.2 up to this point. I don’t find it reliable for any lens I use so far. Af-a single point is the best option for fuji ive found

compression isn't better or worse if it's more. I definitely prefer the compression from 75mm focal length than 85mm focal length.

Isaac Ah-Loe “It’s more” :) lol is the equivalent of saying the sharpening of the f1.0 vs is f1.2 isn’t better or worst, it just more sharper. I will agree to disagree with you and say that more is better.

My favourite Canon lens (85 f1.2, which I still own) is one of the reasons that made me switch to Fuji for my professional work... Weight. The 50mm f1.0 is not a 56 upgrade, it's a different lens. You pay a lot more for extreme apertures. Btw, I own a Canon 50mm f1.2 and a 50mm f1.4. One cost me 4 times the price of the other... Is it worth it? No, but some people just want the fastest, the wider, the newer, the ... the... Whatever! It is not a rational decision, you buy it because you want it. Period. I'm not getting it. Strange focal length on a 1.5x crop and weight.

Actually the 56 f1.2 is sharper wide open. See Mathieu Gasquet comparison. and the 56 is closer to the 85mm classic portrait focal length. The 50 has more Character and creamier bokeh, this is true.

Bigger, more (Front)heavy, more expensive. To gain 0.2 in F-stop, losing 6mm doing so. In most real world results the 56 and even the 50 will do fine. And most people who are not deeply into photography won’t notice any differences anyway. And most photographers needing ‘ using these lenses wide open rarely (Need to) take it out in bad weather. Nope, for me this I too much “want to show we can” and wanting FF like results. Nope, no buy. For me fuji had better spend time and money on some affordable long primes. I’m sure way more people are waiting for those....
