    A good exercise with the GRiii is take the SD card out, set to RAW & you’ll get around 40 shots on the internal memory (like a 36 roll of film) turn the display off, then you have close to a film shooting experience…..+ the excitement, once you get home, of reviewing your shots…..”just like the old days”…. it’s a great discipline - Peter.

    Had the ‘V’, liked it but sold it to get the full frame Sony A7c ILC for street. Both of those cameras were constantly being compared to the Leica Q2 which I think drove their popularity and hype. ‘Poor Man’s Leica’ got stuck in our heads. They’re not Leica but take equally awesome pictures and you can still keep some street photography swagger. The GR3, X in my case, takes equally awesome images, doesn’t stand out and the most effective street photography camera made, IMHO. I don’t care what I look like when using it (dumb tourist works..😄) and I don’t leave home without it.

    Hello Matti! Excellent content as always. I have a question or a request for advice which I am sure you will be able to help me with. I am looking to buy either a fuji xt30 (og & used) or the Ricoh GR3. The Ricoh, i am fascinated by how portable it is and I have a feeling i would use it more often. The fuji because I am drawn towards the brilliant options of its film simulations. Since you are someone who have used both the systems, could you please help me decide on which one would makes more sense. The one thing that I am thinking i will miss if i choose Ricoh is fuji's large film simulation world.. but I know there are few for Ricoh aswell.. If i choose Xt30 then I am worried about portability.. maybe xt30 can be an everyday carry with a pancake lens.. many thanks Matti. :)

    @rrrrench I finally decided to go with Ricoh GR 3. The main factor was how portable the camera is. While the xt30 is by no means large or bulky but doesn't come close to the handling of Ricoh. GR 3 can be basically be a one handed camera from start to close which is great.

  • @mattisulanto

    @mattisulanto

    The brightness of the final image depends on the Image Control mode. The Negative Film makes brighter photos than the Positive Film, for example. The GR wants to protect the highlights and does it quite well, in my opinion. At least my photos do not come out underexposed. That X100V sure looks very nice, but I think that it has been hyped a bit too much for what it really is...maybe many people just want a cool looking camera to walk around with, but for me a fixed focal length is a no go (I can always use a prime for some given situation, but for me a camera needs to be a bit more versatile to justify the high cost they have these days, probably thanks to an ever shrinking market due to the smartphones). As to the color I really have no preference either way (maybe some bodies look good in black, others in silver), but there is one thing that the silver colored cameras are more prone to and that is scratches. Thanks to the plastics used, of course.

    I remember wanting an X100V but they were never in stock. I ended up buying the original GR3, later I bought the em1 mk3 and a bunch of lenses, then a bunch of other cameras. I’ve still not bought the X100V nor any other Fuji and at this point I think I never will. I’m honestly glad I didn’t since I now think they’re overhyped.

    With the release of the 40MP, x100VI, are you at all curious about the 24MP, x100V experience? Many X100V models have now become available on the used market for what they were originally selling for retail ($1400 USD). This may be a little expensive still, but obtainable for those who want to experience it. Me, I like the idea of the tactile manual controls, and the colorful, nostalgic laden, film jpg simulations, but many will argue you can get this in other more capable cameras at a cheaper price. Still, I’m at least curious about it.

    Black bodies are beautiful for me. Most of my camera bodies and lenses are black. That being said, the color or looks of a camera aren’t that important. There must have been a lot of grey XS10 bodies as that is what I have. I’m not too keen on the color of this body. That being said the body color doesn’t prevent me from taking it out for a walk. The look of the camera doesn’t make the image. The guts of the camera (plus the photographer) makes the image. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
