Great comparison! I have the Ricoh GR III and take it with me everywhere in my pocket. The x100v is clearly a more capable camera, but when you think that you have to bring a bag for it or carry it in your hands or around your neck, it has to compete with every other camera that doesn't fit in your pocket. In a way the best comparison for the GR III is a smartphone because both fit in your pocket and you can literally have them with you wherever you go. Smartphones do a lot more, but the GR III image quality and ease of use make it my favourite piece of tech. Thanks again for the comparison!

The GRIII really isn't more portable. I still have to keep it in the same small bag as the Fuji because the GRIII is poorly sealed and more fragile. The viewfinder and overall superior versatility of the Fuji makes it the obvious winner.

I have both the X100V and a GRII, and while they fall into the same category of compact fixed lens cameras the actual feeling of using them is vastly different. The Ricoh is so tiny and light I could slip it into my pocket if I wanted to, but I don't because the Fuji is so incredibly fun to use. I could point either camera at something and get a photo I like, but the Fuji's dedicated dials and retro feel makes me fall in love with the actual act of taking a photo. The best camera is the one you want to take with you.

I researched both these cameras and ended up picking up the x100V at launch. And I gotta say. I love it! The body style is a big draw. The image quality is awesome. I own a sony a7iii (which is an amazing FF camera!) and always shoot raw with it. However, I find myself shooting in Jpeg with the fuji and light editing on my phone or iPad and couldn’t be happier. I wanted a smaller setup to “take anywhere” for daily photography. I would have preferred a pocketable size but, as with every camera, there are pros and cons. But this fuji has very few cons! It’s great. Thanks for the vid!

I've owned both the Fuji x100 and the Ricoh GR. Both of them were the earlier models and not the current models. I loved both? Of them but ended up Selling the Fuji. I feel the Fuji is form over function and the Ricoh is function over form. In the end function won over form. The Ricoh's one handed usage gives the winning edge, particularly when I use it with an off camera light held in my left hand. Also it slips easily into my pants pocket so it's easier to bring it along when I'm not working. I had to mentally decide if it's worth it to bring my Fuji along each time because I hate to have to use camera straps when I'm not working, and I seldom wear a jacket that I can slip it it nto. In the end i found it faster to capture a candid photo with my phone but I found it faster to capture a moment with my Ricoh than with my phone or with my Fuji. The Ricoh wins when the priority is capturing candid moments. I still miss my Fuji for the shear joy of looking at it and playing with it and for it's ability to strike up a conversation with random people. The Fuji is like a Roles whereas the Ricoh is like a good Casio. I don't care about the Fuji's video capability because my phone already does videos just fine.

  • @slicktoroid

Well said! Totally agree. I have to make that mental decision on whether or not to bring out the FUJI because of its size. The Ricoh can always come along and i don't feel bad for not using it because it takes up such little space.

Thanks a lot for the very nice video. I am the lucky owner of both cameras, and I could not chose between the two (I own Ricohs since the film GR1S, always as sharp and small). The Fuji is a fantastic, nice to play with, photographic tool. I love its flash, does great job for fill-ins (I regret that Ricoh removed the flash when moving from GRII to GRIII). I am not that fan of the JPGs on the Fuji side, a little two soft for my taste. On the GR side, I love the pocketable size, the sharpness of the lens, the quality of the jpgs and the simplicity to use. I love the pre-set filters : this camera produces fantastic B&Ws with almost no need for post-processing. I intend to keep both cameras, cannot decide between the 35mm and the 28mm. Will probably use both, Fuji on my neck set for color, and Ricoh in my pocket, ready to shoot in B&W... I fully agree with you that everyone will enjoy both cameras.

In the low light shot, the Fuji was using a slower shutter speed (letting in about 2/3 more light). This happens because iso isn't really standardised on digital cameras. If the aperture and shutter speed were matched, the result would be a lot closer.

The main omissions from the otherwise honest and very thorough review, is the fact that viewing is a huge category, no optical viewer on the GR3 and only a fixed screen on the back, is a gulf to be overcome. X100v has optical finder, an EV, and screen that tilts for waist level work. The GR is a Rolls Royce off point and shoot, the X100v facilitates composition, which is fundamental to creative work !

dunno what's missing that much it terms of usability on rx1r mk2 (i have one) vs fuji, may be just one extra button somewhere in front of it, like on dslrs. sony is definitively missing vs gr3 'cuz it doesn't retain manual prefocus after restart, stupid sony boy's didn't think about street photogs who use zone focusing all the time (shame, nikon boy's didn't make it on coolpix a...) . and rx1r has freaking fragile manual focus (i'd actually suspect programmed obsolence, sony's bastards are very good at it) it dies after à while (if you google, it's a very frequent problem, mine died after 2nd yr). not a huge deal, but still, for a freaking +$3k camera !.. 'curiosly, in practical use i mostly see sony's better IQ in low light, in day time it's very often on par (looking at results on 27 4k screen) with my smaller (and muuuch cheaper) system, gx80+leica 15mm 1.7 (i have a bunch of other camers, dslrs, x70, rx100 m5, i know how to compare...) sony's is great, xtra clean at iso 50 though. oh, and 35mm is quite often not wide enough for street. i've got my rx1r mk2 for 1000 euros 2nd hand in good state, i would never pay more for it today, i'd rather get gr3 in fact, rx1r is too big and clunky for street action (vs gr3 or x70 for instance)

ISO in digital cameras is NOT a standard and has nothing do do with Exposure. You compared the Fuji at f2.8 1/500 to the Ricoh at f2.8 1/800. So you gave the Ricoh far less light. No wonder the noise is worse.

  • @Josh-ow4gc

    @Josh-ow4gc

It has to do with Fujifilm using a different ISO standard. This is why Fuji cameras always look good vs full frame cameras in ISO for ISO tests. But in real world use, assuming the same aperture and shutter speed, Fujifilm cameras always require about one stop higher ISO vs other cameras to get the same exposure. In this case, it would have been best to compare ISO 12800 on the Ricoh to ISO 25600 on the Fuji, if available.

@@rickyzz I have both cameras sitting here. In poor light the X100v will have a bit less noise when I match exposures (not via settings). Neither sensor has great color accuracy against my pro Nikon gear, but the Fuji does great with skin tones. The AF on the GRIII is still pretty poor, though certainly better than my previous GRII. The big issue here is the viewfinder and I will always prefer a camera that allows proper composition, even in bright light.

I never understood this. I've shot the gfx 50s(still do) the x100f and v. The ISO is good in already good light but honestly in genuinely poor light I can't stand how Fuji has handles high iso. So much muddier and with a lot of color noise. For this comparison of course the Ricoh is worse overall but being able to stop down so much due to ibis makes it totally superior imo

@@slicktoroid The XF10 and the X70 are as compact as the Ricoh GRIII (slightly bigger). But the X70 (X100V little brother) has a bonus, the tilting screen. Don't know if Fuji is giving up on those two products. But if Fuji can combine the design of the two and offer two focal lengths (28mm, 40mm) like the 2 GRIII, could be interesting. Don't know if today users would prefer a PASM dial (XF10) over ISO/SS dials like the X100V, popup EVF like the RX1RII (or a external EVF), hotshoe, tilting screen like the X100V, Joystick and clean back like the XF10, 1 or 2 control rings (aperture, focus ring/snap focus ring) ...

Love the GrIII apart from the damned annoying adapter ring which is a fairly loose fit and which WILL get lost at great expense. I don't anticipate using it so have used a couple of dabs of a light adhesive to hold the replacement in place. The GR really is a go everywhere with you camera. Image quality is superb. I don't find the menus or controls quite as intuitive as I'd hoped but then I'm coming from a Fuji background where everything just seems to be where you want it. Maybe in time. thanks for your review.

I’ve got both and trying to figure out which one to keep for my hobby street photography! It’s a tough one. Don’t agree about your passion of photography point for the Fuji x100V - it’s definitely an aesthetic choice rather than passion aka camera bling. Also, did you mention Ricoh Snap Focus functionality? That is way faster than any x100V autofocus when used properly.

Very nice comparison. I am in the process of choosing one of these camera's. I have the fuji X-T3 but would love to have a smaller camera with same picture quality. So the X100V took my attention. But after seeing so many youtube videos of Samuel StreetLife and his passion on the Ricoh GRIII and the fact that you can always take it with you, I now consider the Ricoh. But I am not really a street photographer. To make the choice even harder there is now a Ricoh GRIIIx with a 40 mm lens. I like the flippy screen, the buttons and handling of the X100V, but the small size, the IBIS and exposing for the highlights on the GRIII are also appealing. Pfff still a difficult choice.

@@georgex2003 Hi Jorge, I ended up in getting the Ricoh GRIII. The picture quality is excellent. A couple of weeks ago I took it with me to a museum and took some nice photos with a slow shutter speed. Due to the IBIS the pictures were sharp. With a non-ibis camera I should have used a higher iso setting which would reduce the picture quality. I also tried some Macro shots with the Ricoh, but it's difficult to get good results without a tripod. One of the black & white settings of the camera is Hard Monochrome, in some situations a blue sky turns into back, very dramatic, I am not sure if that is the idea or it is (a defect) on my Ricoh only. Did not see examples of that on KZread. The Ricoh is surely small enough to put in your pocket. Sometimes I find the 28mm too wide and regret that I did not bought the 40mm version, it depends on the situation. Of course you can crop. Not having a flippy screen is a negative point. Making a picture holding the camera at waist level is not doable. I also bought a small metal cap from Ricoh to protect the camera against dust when wearing it in you pocket and an extra battery. All in all I am still content with it. The X100V was more expensive and not that different than the X-T3 handling wise. But the flippy screen of the X100V is something I miss on the Ricoh. Good luck choosing the right camera.

I also tried out the Hard Monochrome option and it made the bright blue sky black too so I don't think it's a defect in your camera. I own both. But the x100V is going to be sold. The Ricoh sensor is sharper, more natural colors, better black&white and has a better focus system and IBIS. The OVF on the fuji is nice. But without IBIS you get more shaky frames as u cant judge it well. And the EFV in it is a potato. Not to mention how you need to change your editing process. While the Ricoh yields DNGs. If you shot film for years then the X100v will evoke that same passion and allow you to call up the skills you acquired - you know, the F16 rule, the tricks you learned about f stops, shutter speed and ASA (or ISO). The dials on the X100V are exactly the same controls you had on your old Nikon, or Canon or Yashica or whatever. I found with the wider lens I was developing a 'style' of my own - a 'look' if you like. It's like shooting with Leica 3 and 5 film cameras back in the day, but with supercharged, extra capability. I do wish though that Fuji would give us a bigger battery, in a bigger grip, along with IBIS. And please Fuji, fix the damn app.

Full disclosure, I am a Fuji FB, that said, I own neither camera as I prefer interchangeable lens rigs. While I currently own the X-T2, X-Pro 2/3, and my X-E2s which propelled me into the Fuji ecosystem (after 37 years with Canon), I am not opposed to adding the ’V’ once life returns to some sense of normalcy and the jobs return. The ’100s’ are just plain sexy, in particular the silver/chromes and from those that work with the ’100’ they do indeed attract a LOT of attention from what I hear, which means I would most likely go with black, stealth is the name of the game in street shooting. That said, a buddy of mine shoots with the GRIII and loves it and it is a great rig by most measures, but the lack of a viewfinder kills it for me, then again, I am 56, an old school shooter.

Although it's a review from a year ago. In low light the GR iii smokes the Fuji. The 1/800 ss could have lowered till 1 second so a much cleaner shot with the GR iii despite the 2.0 aperture. Both apertures were not equal to begin with. With the Fuji 1/60 is the maximum to handhold. With the GR iii you can handhold for 1/2 or sometimes a full second. Therefore lower iso and ince again better in low light.

GRiii all the way for me. It's a camera that you can easily just grab and go. When I had the X100T it felt as if I had to purposefully use it and just ended up, at the time, using my GRii more. The GR just seems to get out of the way and you can just focus on composition as well grabbing the scene before it goes away. Also, never like how Fuji poorly support their X100 line as to regards firmware. Also on Avg I'm getting 300 to 293 on one battery with the GRiii. The X100 cameras are indeed pretty to look at and you will get some comments but not worth it for me. I think the X-E line is a better buy unless you want leaf shutter
