Fuji 70-300mm vs 50-230mm vs 18-135mm how much of a difference does the longer focal lengths make.

Ғылым және технология

In this video we take a look at the Fujifilm lenses 70-300mm, 50-230mm and the 18-135mm not for image quality or autofocus performance but just too see how much of a difference the longer focal lengths make and can you get the same effect by just moving closer and by how much and by cropping is there a big drop in quality when cropping. Plus my personal opinion on which is the one to purchase if any based on budget, weight and best upgrade to your existing lens.

Interesting video. I’ve had the 18-135 for a year or so. I recently bought the 55-200 used and the extra range didn’t really strike me. That said, I have the f2 primes for 23, 35, 50mm - and the endless options of the 18-135 are a blessing and a curse.

Before my comment I just want to say that I really appreciate and thank you for taking the time to make and share videos like this one, I’m sure it takes a lot of time to produce. I was considering getting the XF70-300 but it didn't make much sense to me because I have the XF55-200 and the XF100-400 which I mainly use for wildlife (I don’t want to get too close to the alligators in the Everglades) and sometimes for landscape, I find that both lenses give me great image quality, just for walking around I have the XF16-80 (for when I’m too lazy to bring my primes). Stay safe.

Thank you for your comment, and I totally agree with your decision to keep the 55-200mm + 100-400mm as the 70-300mm wouldn’t really give you any advantage. I also use the 16-80mm as my lazy walk around lens😉

Great video content. Just the kind of comparison I was looking for. Based on your analysis the optical quality seems to be around the same level on these lenses for someone not bothered about metal construction and weather sealing. Seriously constrained on budget for zoom lens on fuji system for astrophotography, followed my gut feeling away from canon/nikon In the mirrorless cameras. I invested in a camera tracker so fast apertures are not an issue as long as it is not really slow.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the ability of the 70-300mm to use converters. I have the 50-230mm as the most ideal for my use case but the 70-300mm is a game changer because I can have the range of the 100-400mm and the relative size and weight of the 55-200mm. Very useful video as always

Hi thank you for your comment I didn’t mention converters for the 70-300mm as personally I wouldn’t use them on that lens, the main use I have for the 70-300mm is wildlife and that I mostly do in the early morning or late afternoon when available light is low so adding any of the converters to this relatively slow lens (f5.6) would mean using even higher iso settings something I don’t want to do but yes they (teleconverters) have their uses with this lens in good light situations.

Hi thank you for your comment, which camera to upgrade too as a wildlife photographer myself I would get the X-T3 it has weather sealing which helps as it always rains on us wildlife photographers plus it has a faster mechanical shutter frame rate and a bigger faster buffer so you can take faster longer sequences. And if you want to try video the video specs are considerably better than the X-S10, the only things the X-S10 improves on is ibis and a better grip. Plus you can get some good deals on the X-T3 since the X-T4 came out. Hope that helps any other questions just ask and I will try to answer them.

I got all three. 50-230 is quite good and light weighted. But it is too slow to focus moving subjects and have a lot of chromatic aberration. It is ok if you are not shooting fast moving or back-lit subjects. 70-300 fixs all these problems plus weather sealing and expandability. Focusing is ultrafast even with 2x teleconverter (which is now 210-900 mm for full frame equivalent). No CA appears for 70-300 even in strong back-lit scene. 18-135 is also a very good well-rounded lens but too short on the tele side.

What I don't understand is 16 years ago, I had a Nikon body with an 18-200mm lens, 8 years ago, Nikon released an 18-300mm lens, yet in 2021, the only options with Fuji is getting multiple lenses. Is Fuji a decade behind Nikon (and others)? --- Also, the 18-300mm F3.5-5.6 from Nikon is smaller, lighter and faster than the Fuji 70-300, despite having more range.. How?? - Am I missing something?

Fuji aimed at a light fully featured market segment not the wildlife sports photographer it’s only recently that the Fuji customer has become interested in using their cameras for that, the majority don’t want or need long fast lenses. You cannot compare camera companies as there marketing strategies are different depending where their original customer base was i.e canon and nikon went head to head in sports/wildlife and documentary segment Fuji is new to the arena so aimed at the consumer market with a light small system for daily life/holiday photography.
