Fuji XF 55-200mm Vs XC 50-230mm - The Great Fujifilm Zoom Lens Shootout

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In today's video, I'm taking the Fuji XF 55-200mm & XC 50-230mm lenses into the Forest of Dean to try them side by side.
For many, the XC 50-230mm is the only chance they are going to get to venture into those focal ranges. Sure, it's not as good a lens as the XF 55-200mm equivalent but, really, how well can it stand up to its big brother?
The answers might surprise you...
Let me know what you think about the images from the XC 50-230mm in the comments below...

    I’m using xc50-230 for my landscape photography for over one year now and think it is a good and light lens. It is sharp, once I even had printed (~80 cm longer side of the picture) a cropped photograph taken on the widest aperture and it looks fine... Main disadvantages are in my opinion: AF which sometimes can be wrong particularly while photographing in fog or against the sun and is slow for photographing moving subjects, plastic built and lack of sealing (I don’t expect for such a cheap lens to be weather sealed but at the same time I already have some dust in the lens which is quite visible while using narrow apertures on plain subject like sky) and some chromatic aberration in the corners on contrasty scenes EDIT BTW You manage to get some nice images while comparing the two lenses. Most reviewers don’t take nice pictures while comparing lenses 👍

    It is, yes, but I’ve modified it slightly so I have a very light, very portable camera rig. If you’d like to see exactly what it looks like, I’ve got a behind the scenes video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/opiNrqmlY8u4n5s.html I’ve had the Pocket since it was released and I’m largely very happy with it. The focusing sometimes plays up and that’s something they don’t seem to have quite fixed with version 2, so I’ve held back on upgrading.

    Alright, this video seal the deal to me. I was wondering what xc lens I want to buy, because I don't have that much money for any xf lens, or other brand as well. I love landscape photography, and I was thinking if the difference between xf and xc is not that much, I'd like to buy this lens straight away. I have X-A5, which is, you know, amateur camera, but for me, as a hobbyist in photography, is enough, and I want to take one step out from my kit lens, 15-45 mm. And I was doing street photography the other day, but very shy to take pictures too close to subject. This lens is just perfect to me, at least for now. Thank you for reviewing this lens.

    I am sorry for the late reply. Chris has it right below. You need to use a separate microphone. Personally, I use a Rode Wireless Go system, but if that's overkill, a cheap-ish Lav mic (tie clip mic) should do the job. Remember, you need the separate audio connector for the camera as well. Unfortunately, the battery completely died in my Osmo Pocket, so I am looking for a new camera. It looks like I might be moving towards one of the new Sony ones.

    I’m debating buying the 55-200 atm. I have the 16-135 and am not sure I’ve made the right choice. It was suggested along with a 35f2 when I got my x-t4 (all used kit) after trading in my canon kit. I had previously had a 70-300 canon so wanted more reach than the 18-55 however undecided whether to go 18-55 and 55-200 to cover all bases! I could probably swap it if I’m quick as only just purchased. I have the xc16-50 on my x-t30 and although it’s xc not xf it’s a great lens. The images from it are so good. I do love an aperture ring though so could swap for the 18-55. Such a dilemma as I feel the 55-200 would be good for my upcoming trip and some of the subject matter but I need to make a quick decision. Thanks for the video

    I need to make another video of this because I have recently got hold of the 70-300mm and, for me, this is better than the 55-200mm…. But, not by much (which I know doesn’t help). Here’s what I think: between 200mm and 230mm, you don’t get much extra in terms of reach. Using any tool to blow up that image (Lightroom’s enhance is very good, as it Topaz Labs Gigapixel) means you can zoom into the picture without loss of pixels. Between the 200mm and the 230mm, the 200mm IS a better lens and you can pick them up second hand. My mum uses the 55-200mm and gets some fantastic results, certainly better than the 50-230mm. But, the 70-300mm is just a better lens. It seems to be faster, sharper, no difference in weight and you can add a teleconverter if you need extra reach later… But, you’re less likely to find a second hand one and I had to wait about 4 months before it arrived… But, it is good enough that I am considering selling my 100-400mm. I can’t fault the idea of the 18-55mm and 55-200mm. They are both incredible lenses and that extra reach will make a difference, especially if you ever want to try wildlife shots.

    @@SteveMellorPhotography thanks for the great reply. I would definitely prefer the aperture ring as that is part of what I enjoy about using Fuji lenses and right now I can’t afford the 70-300 new and as you say not so many around used. I’ve always been happy buying used gear so might continue to keep eyes open for a 55-200 used. My problem with trying to see image quality was because I’m trying to zoom in on an iPad as I only have free Lightroom and it just pixelates everything! Thanks again for informative reply

I’m also on a very tight budget and on my last camera I done well enough with a 70-300 Sigma £100 lens though when my camera etc went for a swim and my mate borrowed me his old Canon 6d with a 15 year old 70-200 L Series lens the difference was plain to see but for my Fuji I think the older xc lens should be fine with what I save going towards another lens or even just travel expenses

    I've never been impressed with the tele zooms by fuji. I do have a 50-230mm mainly because it was going really cheap and I needed a tele zoom with AF. The 70-300mm looks promising especially as it takes an extender

  • @SteveMellorPhotography

    @SteveMellorPhotography

    I like them. I was impressed with the 50-230 based on previous experience with several Nikon zooms. The real question, I suppose, is whether the 55-200mm is worth double the price and that all comes down to utility at the end of the day. The 70-300mm sounds very interesting and it’s likely something my Dad would get. I expect the optics to be pretty similar to what’s already available, though. Whilst I have an extender for the 100-400mm, I don’t like to use it if I don’t have to because of the loss in light.
