Fuel Solutions | Which One Is Right For You - Jays Tech Tips

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In todays video we bring you a detailed look on surge tanks brought to you by Jay from Real Street Performance.
As you progress in making more horsepower, you need to also progress your fuel flow and volume. As you do so, a single pump may not be up for the task. In some applications you're able to run a dual or triple fuel pump hanger, but there are some problems you may encounter with this like cavitation or starvation under lower fuel levels as the size of a factory fuel basket was engineered for a single pump.
In a fuel pump module style application, the hanger , pump, and sensor are all built into a single assembly. You may try to change or upgrade the internal pump of one of these modules, and given the tight space you may possibly cause a fuel leak within the assembly, thus defeating the purpose of your attempted upgrade.
For vehicles equipped with a saddled fuel tank like those needed for driveshaft clearance you usually rely on the ventury effect inside the tank allowing one side to feed the other, and you risk jeopardizing that harmony when changing that in tank pump. Make sure to do your research before going this direction.
Another method is a sumped tank, where a low point is placed under the fuel tank to allow a gravity feed to an externally mounted fuel pump. This opens the door to sloshing or cavitation to affect the delivery to the sump under cornering or hard braking.
An aftermarket Fuel Cell can be used in some applications, but are often a larger, non-formed chassis unit, or smaller for universal fitment with less range provided as the storage capacity is lowered. Along with this application, you often lose the ease of a factory fuel level sensor being used with your factory gas gauge.
A surge tank is a remote reservoir that goes between the gas tank and the engine, and can hold up to three fuel pumps. The surge tank is provided with low pressure high volume fuel using the factory pump, maximizing fuel flow efficiency out of the pump. Once the tank reservoir is full, your surge tank fuel pumps can deliver fuel to your engine without the problems mentioned above.
Jay then touches on a few important things to look for during your surge tank selection process, and how to maximize the efficiency of your fuel system. Check out the full video

Just finished the fuel system in my is300, surge tank is the way to go for sure.(For me at least) twin aeromotive 340s seem to want to do the job for now. I ended up fabricating mine out of a 2.5 gallon fuel cell from ebay with various bulkhead fittings for the feeds, returns, and electrical pass throughs.

You could use the Holly Hydromat which I used inside my 2004 WRX STI fuel tank with a Full Blown brand fuel hanger with dual Walbro 450 lph fuel pumps. It worked great and didn’t experience fuel starvation on sweeping turns. Fuel was full E85. This solution kept the fuel system simple and doing it at a lower cost. Feed and return fuel line used from the hanger was -8an ptfe fuel line and fittings to an aftermarket fuel rail with fuel dampeners, Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator.

I’m currently swapping a 2JZ in my 350z and no one makes a 3 pump hanger for my car. The goal is to make 1400whp. Would you recommend a surge tank?

I have to disagree about sumped steel tanks. It's not like there's a big hole the size of the sump is cutout and the sump installed. The sump is baffled by several small hole saw openings being drilled, then the sump installed. That being said, I've now used a sump tank and they work like a champ!!

Awesome video as always, you missed some of the potential down sides of a surge tank though. Again you might be putting fuel in a place it is less safe. The fuel lines can smell, they can be louder than oem, they can still get hot due to the low volume of fuel surrounding the pumps. Agree it is one of the better options but in a pure street car with a good tank, in tank is much nicer to live with if you can make it work.

I would love an what would you do. I have a 95 neon acr that's built to the gills 😂. Long story short I found the car and iv been bringing her back. I'm dailing her and doing some racing mostly roll racing although I'd love to do some autox next year. I currently have a fuel cell with a sump and a a1000 foward of the cross member and tank which I'm not sure is great😅. Any who car makes 600hp as is so iv been hesitant to make big changes as I don't have spares and these things are getting surprisingly rare and hard to find. That being said It always smells like someone poored gas into the floorboard and it definitely starves for fuel in turns breaking ECT. I don't have a factory tank but I own a bodyshop and can do every job in the shop. I wanna cut the spare tire well out in the trunk and make a big new tank also giving me a nicer more useful trunk. In said tank I thought about partitioning it into 1/3s with baffles and a big tall space for the big sump for the a1000. I'm cheap and it works plus I kinda like the sound of it 😂.I have a aem stealth 340 but am willing to get another pump as a lift pump. That being said the car is turbo limited ATM and that's changing but within the 7/8 fuel line (hard line)s limits. Does this sound viable? Or should I just get a few of the 340s and go with that in said sump? Or do you have a better idea? Maybe an off the shelf solution that would still give me 15gal+ . I'm not super into a steel tank in the crash area and no liner... I don't know how to make one of those or who does

On external pumps I always run as large of a feed as possible and what ever size feed that will meet my hp goals, -8 will get you over 800 on gas and maybe 700 or more on e85 depending on fuel pressure, pro stock cars from the 700s made over 600 hp with 3/8s fuel lines and a old school mechanical fuel pump

What are your thoughts on adding fuel cell foam to a factory tank? Similar to aeromotives fuel bowl made out of foam idea. In my s13 tank the pump hanger hole is large enought that I was able to cut and stuff the factory tank full with foam after I removed the factory baffle that had fallen off after 30 years anyways. Hoping to mitigate fuel slosh to keep the pump happy under acceleration.
