FSX Tutorial: Autopilot

Today we take a quick look at some Autopilot functions, what they're used for and also how to use them. Using the autopilot is an advantage, because it assists the pilot with physical control of the plane, allowing the pilot to concentrate on other aspects of flying, such as navigation.

    @@Doofer911 - I know this video is older now, but I'm a former pilot (CPL 2003). Never did end up working in the post 9/11 industry unfortunately. Have just started playing FSX and am enjoying re-learning all the things I've forgotten. Your videos are in many ways better explanations than I had in ground school. Probably because learning from a video and seeing the simulator in action clicks a lot easier than trying to visualize how it should work or look. Makes me want to get back in the air again. Some of the best times of my life was learning to fly. Thanks for the vids and the information!

    Greetings -- great video; nicely done. If I may point out one small error, at 8:58 you state that the default climb rate in the Cessna is 700 meters per second. It's actually 700 feet per minute. (700 m/sec is about Mach 2.0, LOL!)

    Just got back into FSX. I recall an issue that I have rediscovered... I have buttons on a button box mapped to the AP. When I use those buttons to activate the AP heading or Altitude the heading snaps to current heading and the altitude snaps to current altitude erasing the desired settings I had input to the AP. If I mouse click on the relative AP buttons it works as intended and the aircraft responds to my AP inputs. Thoughts? Thanks! Dave

  • @dolphinszz2291
    @dolphinszz22916 жыл бұрын

    I think a good way to describe the difference between course and heading is this. -- the course would be like the amount of degrees you are planning to fly or the direction it wants you to fly, and the heading would be like the actual physical movement of the aircraft banking to a certain heading on 10, 20, or 30 degrees.

  • @Doofer911

    @Doofer911

    6 жыл бұрын

    Nope, the movement of the plane is "Rolling", the plane will "Roll" to a "Bank Angle" of 10, 20, 30 degrees. Heading is the direction that the nose of the plane is pointing, Course is the direction the plane is flying over the ground and isn't necessarily the same as the Heading. For example, if you're flying with a crosswind, you have to angle the plane into the wind and the plane will drift sideways through the air, therefore the Heading and Course would be different.

    When I activate the autopilot, the plane points the nose down for a few seconds before going nose up to hold the vertical climb. Is that a glitch, or does the plane do that in real life?

    Hey Doofer excellent video as usual! Could you make one for beginners on how to learn to fly in FSX from beginning to end. For example when I replicate your Inverness flights I have no problems. Rod Machado ground school is excellent but the tutorials are bug filled frustrations that could put you off flying altogether forever! Why do you use an add on Cessna. Are the controls better You get the gist of what beginners need?

    Thank you for this video about the AP. It is very helpful. The aircraft (C-172) I have been using for training has an AP just like the one in the video, but I've never received any instruction on it. I don't know if it is so simple as some would say, but I guess in aviation I don't want to think that anything is simple. I mean, I don't want to underestimate even the simplest equipment and lead to an incident. I liked your point about one needs to use the AP within the aircraft's limitations. This reminds us how important it is the basics we have learned. If you don't mind me asking, I would like to know how to change the VS on the AP in the aircraft. Is it the same UP and Down bottoms for the altitude? The video only show how to do it on the simulator. I appreciate it.

    *DO NOT USE THIS VIDEO AS INSTRUCTION FOR A REAL AP UNIT!* Speak to your instructor about using a real world Autopilot unit. The Autopilot in FSX is a simpler version of real world autopilots and they work quite differently. In *FSX*, the up and down buttons are used to adjust the Vertical Speed.

    How can i calculate of define the vertical speed in simple planes ?

  • @OLGMC

    @OLGMC

    7 жыл бұрын

    Mohamed Faysal For a normal (comfortable) 3° descent angle it's very simple, just multiply your ground speed by 5. If you are flying 100kt , you would aim for a 500fpm descent. If your main concern is to lose X feet in X time than just take the formula V(speed, in this case your VS) = D (distance, in this case your feet that you want to loose) divided by T (time, in minutes). If you want to loose for example 4500ft in 5 minutes you take a 900fpm descent (4500/5).

    Hi Doofer. Again from sunny Cape Town. I hope you can help me out. When flying the A2A 172 in level flight and press the Auto pilot button the plane just starts shooting up like a rocket. I have read the manual so many times and cannot seem to find anything. It seems as if there is some sort of preset and whenever I engage the AP it just does it own thing. I have watched your tutorial re AP (several times many times) and gone through your steps. But F%&***&% nothing works. Steam edition of FSX

    The A2A Autopilot doesn't function like the standard FSX version. If I remember correctly, you need to dial in your target altitude, select "Arm" then select a vertical speed.

    +King Lim Pang The Flight Director will draw some crosshairs on the Attitude Indicator. This is to help you manually fly the plane to the Altitude and Heading you want. As for 0.00, that is the Mach speed of the aircraft. During the Cruise phase of flight, the speed is usually measured as Mach speed rather than Knots. For example, a plane might fly at Mach 0.75 during Cruise.
