When you see gar on the top water like that the oxygen level in the lake is really low. Just like when the catfish are floating to the top dead. ThE levels are really low. After a while you’ll see carp floating dead as well. The summer heat really depletes the oxygen levels in the waters this time of year.

gar have lung, they take air directly from the surface, so they have no problem with low oxygen water. There is something else that make it act that way, could be a recent catch and release.

Bluegill are my favorite fish to catch and my favorite fish to eat and that cane pole fishing brought back a whole lot of childhood memories. LFG is a true fisherman, no hype or bs from this guy.
I remember when I was a boy, my Southern grandma took us kids to her friend's backyard pond to catch a whole mess of bluegill, then we went back to her house and she fileted them all out with the skin still on. She saved all the tails and fins and fried them up along with the filets. I'll tell you what, I still dream about those fins and tails and how we all fought over them once we tasted them for the first time.

@@TristinC. Don't remember that much about it. To be honest, I didn't pay much attention when I was younger, and by the time I was getting old enough to start paying attention to recipes she wasn't doing much with fish. At least not fresh caught fish. I do remember cornmeal, maybe a little flour, salt and pepper, but I couldn't tell y'all all the seasonings.

Never filleted a blue gill. The bones are so easy to avoid.
Jason, try your Bluegill fry using 50/50 mix of McCormick's fish fry mix and McCormick's cajun, have fed hundreds with this mix and everyone absolutely loves it. Up here in Tn, Bluegills are my #1 summer target fish, so wonderful to eat, and everyone loves the taste.
That's amazing that gar likes you.
Man you sure brighten up my day, it's so wonderful watching you fish with that old pole and bobber. Just like I did when I was a kid. Enjoying the simple things in life, even those little but tasty looking morsels of bluegill. Don't have to be giants to be delicious and so much fun. Thank you so much, bless you and your family.
LFG...my hats off to you brother. Your videos are unique and always keep us guessing. Keep up the good work. 👍

i’ve always cooked bluegill whole a little tip when you scale them use a teaspoon it makes a little less of a mess and makes it easy
This is how we cooked them growing up lol I don’t think I’ve ever fillet a brim lol but it sounds good
Great video! My grandmother from Shreveport would fish gills out of caddo lake and fry the whole mess for dinner. She'd be in a little jon boat with a paddle all day to bring food home. The most underrated eating fish there is.

Really late for spawn. Gar can take in oxygen from the air. They often do this to refill their swim bladder. Doesn’t explain why it was so chill but could have been recently caught.

Tip for scaling: if you use an inverted spoon blade and perform diagonal strokes the scales just zip off with ease and don't fly everywhere.

Nobody should ever underestimate the ability of a water bobber and a fly. It’s easily my favorite thing to catch bluegill. That and bluegill fishing is extremely underrated nowadays and just hate it. They’ll hit anything that they can see. Period
The gar petting was amazing!!! I have never see someone be able to just reach out a pet one. Regular white bread balled up and squished on a hook will catch a mess of bluegill /sunfish too. cheaper than crappie bits. now I know how to descale one and I don't mind picking at my food to eat it (yes I love crawfish) so frying the fish up like that would be fun for me as well. Another option: Growing up Southwestern Colorado our favorite fish to eat was trout and bluegill. We scaled them (except Brooks), removed entrails and gills (left the heads). If you are squeamish about the head they make a good handle. We had a Dutch oven we would get the oil really hot, spread the fish open so it cooks on the inside and out. In less than a minute they are so crispy you can eat everything. Love you stuff. Thank you.
