When you see gar on the top water like that the oxygen level in the lake is really low. Just like when the catfish are floating to the top dead. ThE levels are really low. After a while you’ll see carp floating dead as well. The summer heat really depletes the oxygen levels in the waters this time of year.

I remember when I was a boy, my Southern grandma took us kids to her friend's backyard pond to catch a whole mess of bluegill, then we went back to her house and she fileted them all out with the skin still on. She saved all the tails and fins and fried them up along with the filets. I'll tell you what, I still dream about those fins and tails and how we all fought over them once we tasted them for the first time.

Dude. The fins and tail on gills and the tail on channels has always been one of my favorite parts. Nice little crunchy fish chips. Tasty as hell.

Dude, you must love your chickens. Giving them the best bite of a female ‘gill. My grandfather (born in 1907) taught me to fry those bigger roe sacs right alongside the fillets. Absolutely delicious.

Hey i noticed your using your first fishing pole when you were younger thats awesome. I never went fishing when I was younger I never had anyone to take me. I fell in love with fishing on my own and now I can't get enough. But I never tried eating any bass or blue gill or crappie I normally just bought my catfish from HEB.

Another option: Growing up Southwestern Colorado our favorite fish to eat was trout and bluegill. We scaled them (except Brooks), removed entrails and gills (left the heads). If you are squeamish about the head they make a good handle. We had a Dutch oven we would get the oil really hot, spread the fish open so it cooks on the inside and out. In less than a minute they are so crispy you can eat everything. Love you stuff. Thank you.
