Frustrations over McDonald's self-serve kiosks

Robots versus real life. How would you like your order taken?
Companies continue to be creative as they keep up with rising costs. for one Tierrasanta man, it was too much to take after a trip to McDonald’s.
"Are you kidding me? You can't use cash in a McDonald's?," Daniel Miley said, laughing.

I've stopped patronizing any businesses that do not accept cash. I get very annoyed when I go to a WalMart checkout, ring up all my items, and then get informed that the machine does not take cash and was not informed beforehand by signs or verbally of that fact. Last time this happened to me I had a bunch of frozen food items, nearly a full cartload, over $400 worth. I didn't have my cards with me, and I wasn't going to go back to my house 25 miles away to retrieve them. I had cash in hand. When I looked around for assistance and finally got the attention of an employee she couldn't help me, so she called down her manager, and that took way longer than I wanted to wait. When the manager arrived she informed me that I would have to take my items to another machine and rescan all of it. I was pissed and informed her that WalMart doesn't pay me to do that and that they could just keep it. She got mad and stated that I needed to return the items. I rebuffed her by again stating that I'm not a WalMart employee, and apparently WalMart doesn't really want me as a customer either. Then I just walked away. Screw WalMart.

I rarely eat at McDonalds. Recently my wife was in a hospital for the day (outpatient). The hospital cafeteria was closed. So, I went across the street to a McDonalds. There was nobody at the counter. There were 4 kiosks waiting for my input. Well, I went through the learning process of dealing with their user interface. I finished inputting my order and was ready to pay. There was no way to get a total or a way to complete the transaction. I fiddled around with the kiosk for several minutes trying to complete the transaction. No luck. An employee saw me and offered to take my order. I complained about the kiosk and he just shrugged his shoulders and said "yep...I know". So, I placed my order with the human and assumed I was making progress. Nope! His register ran out of receipt paper. So he disappeared for several minutes while hunting down a roll of receipt paper. Needless to say, I won't be going back to McDonalds unless there are no other choices.

Then the machine couldn't make a special order so he yelled it to the cook. McDonald's makes ALOT of extra money not having people inside, no refills, no bathroom use, no condiments, no extra cleaning. I'd don't see anything getting better for these mega old time fast food places anymore. Just go to small startups for better food and service.

They have had them in our area in the Midwest for at least 6 years, I used it once as it was not intuitive and took what I felt was too long to place an order. Most cashiers are well versed in the screens for items and can place my order faster than I can. Let's be honest, if I wanted to use a screen to place an order, I would get the companies app. Also, people tend to shy away from the in person, social interactions of society, which I hear a lot being blamed on "anxiety" or "nervousness" or worse, the age old leaned on "adhd"

If im going to do all the work, ordering, scanning, bagging, self pay, no payment options then i should get a discount. By the way if you need to save minutes in your day by using selfcheckout your doing something wrong. Not to mention each self serve eliminates at least 2 work shifts that can go to people who need the job for whatever reason.

Their kiosks aren't that difficult to use. As for the layout and order flow, that's intentional to add some friction to encourage the customer to order more. Many McDs will allow the customer to order with a person if they ask. Many don't know that or don't want to wait for an employee.

How about having a cashier at all times, where that is their only job, who can not only count, but can read, write, speak, and understand English? I find it CRAZY customers are even demanding this. 1. No one wants to work fast food jobs. Turn over is always very high as people just take Fast food jobs as a stop gap job while looking for a better job, or its just a part time job. Takes time to train a cashier 2. I am sure they could retain a cashier, but would you be willing to pay a $10 service fee for using a cashier? or Would you prefer to add on another $3 to $8 for the cost of meals? (cost to pay for the workers wages, training, workers comp, taxes, etc)

I haven't been to a fast food place in years. I last went to a Wendy's several years ago. The guy behind the counter didn't speak English. He had to have someone come over and translate for him. Then that person just took over and finished ringing up our order while the guy stood there. Everyone there was speaking a language other than English. Whatever it was, they were all speaking it. It sounded like Hindi, but I am guessing. This was a first for me. And a last, since I haven't been back there since.

So I went to the one person behind the counter and explained the situation and he wanted to charge me again and I said no…..either the kiosk is out of paper in the printer or you need to check back there where the orders are being prepared and make sure my food that I paid for is being prepared and that I had already paid for it. He seemed confused but did check and saw I had paid and my food was being prepared.

Went to Walmart last week. They had about a dozen self service kiosks with available green lights with a long growing line. Instead, the worker was yelling directions about getting into some sort of imaginary line where you didn’t know where it started, or where it ended…all while someone was distracting her and asking her where the toilet paper was. Total chaos. I went to the full service checkout instead and it was actually faster.

When self service gas pumps came about 30 (or so) years ago at first I was frustrated. Eventually I accepted the fact that I didn’t miss interaction with the person at the register who more than likely hated their job and couldn’t give directions to some location 5 blocks away. Now it’s only a small minority of the population that even remembers having someone who pumped your gas (except in Oregon?) or you had to walk inside to pay. Eventually we won’t have to interact with anyone in the general public.
