Frozen Air Conditioner Multiple Issues

Ғылым және технология

I am on a no air-conditioning service call. As I arrive and look at the unit I find the air handler evaporator coil is all iced up. I shut the unit off and go outside and check the AC Condensing Unit. Ice is outside on suction line until it reaches the compressor. Therefore, I pull the disconnect and test contactor, verifying it didn’t get stuck. Next I go inside and find a zoning panel. Then I find a zone damper that a wire fell off. I fixed the loose wire on the HVAC systems zone damper. I return the next day to find refrigerant charge low. I leak search the unit and locate leak on condenser coil. I recharge the system for temporary cooling. Then sell them a née condensing unit.

    I had frozen coils on mine once and it was because condensate drain was blocked and water leaked onto the AH filter. Usually frozen lines = a refrigeratant leak, low on charge, or bad filter. In my case it was a wet filter.

  • @thehvachacker

    @thehvachacker

    3 жыл бұрын

    Wet Filter blocks airflow the same as a dirty plugged up filter. Frozen lines are from the symptoms you listed. With one added scenario: system left on long time after the evaporator froze. Many don’t shut down the system when it’s not working.

    Just one damper not opening can cause it to freeze up? I believe you. But could you explain how? Is it because the thermostat for the area couldn’t ever satisfy?

  • @thehvachacker

    @thehvachacker

    3 жыл бұрын

    If you have no air flow what happens to the evap coil? It freezes. Therefore if all zones are closed and the ac is running you have no airflow. That causes the coil temp to drop below freezing and start icing. Yet that was a symptom. Not the main reason for system freezing. The main reason was revealed later in the video

  • @jamescordes8673

    @jamescordes8673

    3 жыл бұрын

    Not enough air flow over the inside coil will cause it to freeze so if that zone is calling and no others are then the air is going nowhere and will freeze the coil. Lucky for her other zones seem to be calling more but the system would never shut off too.

    Great video. My suction line is frosting up. Indoor temperature is 75F and outdoor ambient is 70F. It's r410a with low suction pressure. The low side saturation temp is 28F. I am getting low superheat but normal subcooling with fixed orifice. Filter is clean and air flow is good. The coil has no frost but frosting just before service valve at outdoor condenser. All amp draws are good. I tried adding some refrigerant but the low side pressure would not rise. I just can't figure this one out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • @thehvachacker

    @thehvachacker

    Is the system overcharged? Low superheat seems like an airflow problem or overcharged. Is evap coil possibly dirty? Subcooling not that important with fixed orfice. Superheat is used for charging piston systems.

    No, the zone control was stuck closed because of the fallen wire and it causes an airflow restriction which causes units to ice up. The burned contactor isn’t necessarily a problem because it’s still kicking in and out when he takes off the thermostat wires but it is an indicator that something is over amping and 90% of the time it’s the fan motor

Get the wago lever connectors brand (germany ) by them from an electrical supplier store unless you can verify the amazon seller (there's china knock-off wago's). That HZ2432 board was installed in an inappropriate service area, IMO. On another note a doctors office should have better clean air manage ment standards- can only imagine the bacteria, virus, mold etc in the air handler/duct system.

    I the new aluminum coils seem to hold up a lot better. I think electrolysis could be a factor. Most Lennox leaks are back corner opposite of drain side near bottom. Right where the copper goes through the steel. We will see. I don’t think the class action lawsuit was 2014, units covered many years after that. I think 2014 was the Copeland compressor sludge that took out many txv’s on Lennox units. Yet time goes so fast it could of been both.

    All he did by pulling the disconnect was turn the compressor off. Control side was still calling for cooling, which he demonstrated by testing the contactor. There was no benefit to leaving that unit running, as it being that frozen up would cause low pressures and hide the refrigerant leak. Best to turn off the compressor and let it melt as soon as you can. Obviously doesn't apply to all situations.
