Front View Digital Portrait Drawing - Podcast 11

Matt recently started a new front view portrait drawing tutorial. Many members of Drawing Tutorials Online have requested this front view tutorial because it's tough to draw. Matt decided to draw this tutorial digitally using his Cintiq LCD monitor. Next time I'll realize eye size in proportion to video screen. Gee I've only been doing this for four years now.

I think its like this: if you are unsure how to go about proportions, you do the guide lines and stuff, and if you are like this guy, very good at proportions, you can just start wherever you want. I need a bit of guide lines myself, it all depends on how much I want it to look like the model ;)

Its interesting. For frontal portraits, I do it the second way, and for 3/4 or angled views I always do it the first way. Both are nice.

I've taken so much from your videos, I can easily aspire from your work :D I've even referenced alot of your videos in my college work in england, im trying to incorporate skeletal studies into my work. Think you could do a video on the proportions and scaling of the human skeleton or skull :D

Master illustrations that draw from the mind like Glenn Vilippu, Andrew Loomis, Michelangelo , da vinci, all drew from the mind point of view. That's what must be understood. The proportions of the face are something you always put down when you are drawing from the minds point of view. Even when getting likeness. It's a different approach than trying to draw only what you see. It's a combo of drawing what you see and the ideal of what it actually is.

When you learn from mind you can let creativity fly, which is what being an artist is all about. What's right for you? Do you like to draw photos? If so then this method will work great for you. If you like to create stylized work that stands out than you most definitely will want to learn how to draw from mind.

Here is where your confusion is. There are two completely different approaches to art. One is based on drawing only what you see. The other is drawing from based on what you know. Drawing from mind. That doesn't mean you draw what's in your head, it means you draw with a formula in your head. You draw based on the ideal. The ideal is proportional based. It depends on what type of art you trying to make. When you know how to draw from mind you have a limitless pallet to create with.

four years ? Well, my experience with tablet is that I'm quite inaqurate in terms of drawing clear and nice shapes - which is obviously not your problematic area... I lvoe it. Did you draw before those 4 years of working with tablet ?

It's much better to start from the ideal, rather than act as a photo copy machine. Some people are amazing at being photo copy machines, but it's not for everyone, nor does everyone want to draw like this. This is why if you just do a google search you will see thousands of other ways to go about art. It's about whats best for YOU

Isn't that style called point to point drawing? It definitely looks like a tougher approach to drawing.

I think you are missing the point of construction. There are two different views in art. Drawing from the ideal from mind method, or drawing only what you see. The proportion construction method has nothing to do with practice, it's something that you would always do when you create from the minds point of view. People have a miss understanding of that. You base your portrait off of the ideal and pull the likeness in, or you can do what you see in this video. Two very different approaches.
