    For anybody who is watching this in the future and can't get their bolt to latch with the door closed, make sure the lock and the door knob shafts are lined up on the door itself. Mine were not lined up, so I had to install my strike plate on an angle to account for this. I had my strike plate perfectly aligned with the holes, but it took me hours to figure out that it was actually my door that was screwed up.

    Using longer screws make it more secure because longer screws go deep into the studs (2”x4”) the door frame is very thin & delicate piece of wood making the door more breakable. If u just use the 3” screws no matter the strike plates. It’s just as secure.

    Great idea, however there is one security flaw with the door design. I would replace the deadbolt with one that opens with a key on the interior side, and place the key away from the side panel window when not at home. The bad guys know to break the glass, and reach in to open both the deadbolt and handle. Just a suggestion from 31 years of Law Enforcement.

    Thank you. I am a single mom and we had to have our foundation repaired which greatly misaligned our deadbolt and now our door knob as well. It is not safe so i am going to get this set up and it looks like there is enough room in the opening on the plate so I can make the adjustments above and below which is our issue.

    I bought the same security latch plate and put on my walk in garage entrance door and I followed your excellent steps and it was easy to follow. The only complaint I have on this Defender Security latch plate is I noticed one of the supplied three inch screws were bend, or curved a bit, which I had to wonder about the strength of the screws. Luckily, I had some three inch galvanized three inch screws I had used on this same door two years ago on the existing old latch plates and I used three galvanized screws on this new latch plate which I think will add more security and strength than the supplied screws. I still give this latch plate a thumbs up 👍

    I keep looking at the junky doorjamb to the garage, it's cracked and poorly constructed. Things line up differently depending on the season. I don't consider that door any kind of security once 'they' get past the big garage door. A strike plate like this is definitely in my future, and a smart lock. Having that door secure itself at night would be pretty cool.

  • @cornpop7805
    @cornpop7805 Жыл бұрын

    I have a handle-set and two dead bolts. The extra dead-bolt is a purely mechanical push-button combination lock. I drew up a single strike-plate, which encompassed all the individual strike-plates and even added 3" above and below. I had a fab shop laser cut it for me. The material was 1/8" stainless steel and it had holes for maybe 12 screws. Way overkill, but secure as it gets. I actually mortised the strike-plate flush to the door frame. Don't forget to install longer screws in your hinges too because they would be the new weak point. To be clear, if you have a storm door with a decent lock, burglars will very likely avoid the front door. The guy in the video seemed to have one already. Most residential doors in the US can be breeched by just throwing a hip into it. Not true with a typical out-swing storm door. They usually have to break the glass to breech a storm door. Most burglars will opt for the man-door on the garage because they're usually out of sight. Alternatively, daylight break-ins might occur at the glass patio door, where a drug addict will just throw a landscape brick through the glass. My garage man-door has a 2x4 across it (barring the door). My glass patio door is hurricane glass and 10 tries with a brick won't get through it. Also, don't forget to put a zip-tie on your emergency release on your overhead garage door, otherwise they can be opened with a coat hanger.

    Mine is the same way, you can buy the 3M security film to prevent a quick smash and open. They could still get in, but not before they have a .30hate putting them down. It takes a while to actually get through that stuff if installed properly, they'd have to smash the glass and then use a knife to cut it all out. Security is all about providing more and more standoff, Larson and others sell storm doors with the same 3M film concept or gates that can prevent someone from simply walking up to the door and kicking it in.
