We chose Fronius Primo 5.0-1 AUS as our inverter during installation of 1 phase 6.6kW system. Our panel installation is split into two separate directions. 40% panels (on the first string) are facing east and 60% of panels (on the second string) are facing north. The inverter is marketed and sold as a 5kW Inverter by Australian Solar Installers. It does generate, depending on configuration, 5KW +-10% if more than 5kW of power is supplied to the inverter.
Things I dislike about inverter:
It is very noisy when hot and under full load, which is pretty much most of the year in Brisbane. I can clearly hear cooling fan noise behind the closing door and sometimes behind the 2 closing doors. However, it is installed in the garage and not THAT huge of the problem
Initial configuration isn’t friendly and even installer gave up configuring Fronius power meter to work with Fronius inverter. At the end I had to update the Data Logger manually for it to talk to the inverter. I thought that a reputable company like Fronius could make sure that their equipment supplied to installers can talk to each other.
Outdated user user interface and application. It is my second Fronius inverter, I have been using Fronius products for the last 5 years and there is no change. Yes, it just works, but maybe not enough to compete with ever evolving competition
Updates take forever to load - just from my experience, do not update when the inverter is working. Do it after sunset.
Things to like
Although many of their competitors offered a 10 years warranty on their inverters, Fronius were first ones to do so.
It works and works reliably (subject to personal user experience).
It is a well supported, big brand name.
To conclude, if I’d choose a new solar system today knowing what I know now I probably would research Fronius competition a bit more. I’m pretty sure that Fronius would end up in my top 5 list, but might not make it to shortlisted ones.
Would I recommend it? Yes, conditionally, do your homework. See what else is out there.
Do I regret getting one in the first place? Mostly No.

You can’t have 2 panels facing east because the inverter needs a minimum voltage input - I believe the fronius primo is 240VDC. Each panel generates roughly at 50V, so you will need at least 5 strung together. If you have 330W panels you will have 20. I have 13 north and 7 west. 6.6kW of panels that they sell you is a waste on north face as inverter can only output 5kW. So 1.6kW wasted when sun beaming down midday. Even though we have 4.3kW north and 2.3kW west, even between 11-3pm the inverter is maxed out at 5kW. Can see the flat line on the solar live app

Is not waste at all ! Will be limited production on a peak hour but outside the peak normal more panls will produce more energy ! In fact if with a sistem of 5 KW panels you ll heve 2-3 hours peak with 6,6 KW you ll have another 2 hours peak and in all other part of the day will produce more with 6,6 than 5 kw ! In fact you lose 1,6 KW just for peak hours , and the same the inverter will start sooner in the morning and stop later in the evening ! U can use maximum 50% more power panels than actual Inverter you have. The name is : supracharged system !

The two panel strings need to keep as balanced as possible Eg: 21 Panels (10+11) The fan noise is related to the load. At 5000W the inverter is fully loaded and that creates heat which is dissipated from the internal heat sink which is assisted by a very small fan drawing outside air and directing across the heat sink and then out of the top of the unit. If the garage door is in direct sun the garage ambient temperature will be higher and the inverter will be hotter. If the inverter get overheated it will down rate its output. You will also need to occasionally clean the dust from the fan blades as this causes noise and load on the little fan and the fan will last longer. Australian legislations allows the installer company to overload the inverters by 33% Eg: 5000W+33%= 6600W. This allows the inverter to have more panels collecting sunlight in overcast / cloudy days to allow the inverter to actually make more power than it would with just 5000W of panels.

Thank you for the detailed comment. I've spoken to a lot of installers and solar users. As good as Fronius brand is their inverters are way too noisy. Looks like other brands caught up and doing even better job.

@@GregYurchenko This is a big reason I got SMA Sunny boy 2.5 instead as it has no fans at all - silence is golden as the inverter is in my house.

@@MrButuz indeed, as good as Fronius is the noise was totally unbearable. Good move choosing silent inverter!
