From the creators of SPIRITED AWAY, MY NEIGHBOR TORTORO and PRINCESS MONONOKE, comes FROM UP ON POPPY HILL, the first feature film collaboration between father and son Hayao Miyazaki and Goro Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli.
Set in Yokohama in 1963, the story centers on an innocent romance beginning to bud between Umi and Shun, two high school kids caught up in the changing times. Japan is picking itself up from the devastation of World War II and preparing to host the 1964 Olympics -- and the mood is one of both optimism and conflict as the young generation struggles to throw off the shackles of a troubled past. As Umi and Shun's tentative relationship begins to blossom, a buried secret from their past emerges to cast a shadow on the future and pull them apart.

Studio Ghibli is known for it's magic. Even if there isn't a mystical creature in the movie, it'll feel mystical. I just know it.
Ghibli has done multiple non-fantasy movies before and they've all been great. Grave of the Fireflies and Whisper of the Heart beat out almost anything else they've done. I love how refreshing it is when Studio Ghibli gives us a realistic piece like this, it's a nice departure from the majority of animated films being crapped out these days. If you can't appreciate these types of stories then get out.

Then get out? Really? Get over yourself. People can like and dislike what they want. This is coming from someone who likes pretty much every Ghibli movie except Nausicaa. You don’t get to gatekeep just because some people don’t like the slice of life films the studio has produced. They’re enjoyable in their own right, but I can understand why some people expect fantasy from Ghibli. Their mascot is Totoro for a reason.

@@IllHandleThis it may come as a surprise to you but a nearly decade older me agrees. I believe it was in response to some people acting as if Slice of Life stories were new territory for the studio and showing their lack of knowledge of their catalog beyond the hits, but regardless that last part was extra on my behalf lol. Ofc people can like/dislike whatever they want. Now in 2023, I’m just gnashing my teeth for Hayao’s new film to finally come out this year, regardless of what genre it’s supposed to be. Ghibli films are just nice and I miss them.
I cried for 8 weeks straight when I watched this film
Studio Ghibli have its way around creating nostalgia of memories that never existed. And i love that ❤
10 years have past, it's like watching my very own childhood, reliving the old days, ghibli studio movies have always that sense of nostalgia, and after all these years, i have never grown to bore watching ghibli movies, the first movie i watched, was howls moving castle. The first time I watched it was with my mother, she was a fan of studio ghibli and her favourite was spirited away, the feeling of the early 2000s hit me so hard whenever i watch these. Not one ghibli movie has ever come out with a low rating not one has ever made me hate it and all of it is made a masterpiece by a master thanks to Hayao miyazaki for creating such beautiful childhood movies
Me and my daughter loves these movies, we always buy them
This actually looks REALLY, REALLY interesting. I honestly can't contain my excitement.

Studio Ghibli makes me want to live in anime world rather than real world 🙂
This is one of the best animated movie I’ve watched...
Okay, you know, it is interesting. I still remember Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Whisper of the Heart, and all the other Studio Ghibli movies I've watched years ago. Until this day, I still remember the warmth and emotion I've felt watching those masterpieces. It's sooo NOT something you forget about within half a day! Just because you don't like it yourself, Miss, doesn't mean you have to ruin it for everyone else. Be more respectful to the ones who like it, please?

i just finished this beautiful movie and it has such lovely music ~ !
So now we get: "A high school girl in the 1960s falls in love while trying to save an old clubhouse." That sounds kind of... Ghibli? Yeah, I'll see it.
I was just about to say the same. Ghibli films are truly fantastic.
Sometimes I miss old days I've never experienced.
FAVORITE MOVIE EVER
It sure was too bad Anton Yelchin passed away unexpectedly. Due to a jeep accident. But he did spectacular job as the voice of Shun here.
They did the trailer really really well. I'm so excited to watching the movie

i love studio ghibli movies i cant wait for this to come on dvd !!
Studio Ghibli movies are so much better than a brief description would make them out to be. "Two 5-yo's fall in love. One is a part-time goldfish." Actually one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. "A young witch delivers cakes and stuff on her broomstick. She doesn't cast any other spells." I've recommended this one all over the place. "There's this talking pig who flies an airplane..." Wonderful movie. So now... durned character limit

I need to see the film. I love anything Studio Ghibli or done by Miyazaki or his colleagues.
One movie which has left a profound impression on me, in more than one way. The actor who played young Shun, I just found out, has actually died in 2016. Feeling numbed.....😥
So excited to see it!
Seung-Ah as your profile pic and my favorite Sunny Hill song as your username----awesomeness.
I saw this movie this last Sunday and I really liked it. All the songs were great, the club house was so cool, and the dilemma between Umi and Shun just made my heart ache SO much. It's so unfair on all accounts. It made me insecure, but I couldn't help but think, "So what? If they love each other, then..." It feels like a while since I've seen a Studio Ghibli film, even though I saw Arrietty when it came out, but although it was a good movie, I didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed this one. =)

Why did I not hear of this sooner?! Ghibli! *squeeee*
You sure SKINNED this one before it's release.
Studio Ghibli. One of the last beacons of true childlike wonder and creativity in the movie industry. Maybe THE last. Disney seems more interested in making money than creating something wonderful these days.

That's what people say today.
Yes, because they are the Disney of Japan after Osamu Tezuka (Kimba the White Lion, Speed Racer, Astroby).
Makes a note: "Only Yesterday." Haven't heard of it. Will look into it. There aren't very many directors and fewer studios who can get me to watch a movie simply by having their names attached to them. Miyazaki and Ghibli stand at the very top of that very short list.

whats the song playing towards the end of this trailor?
I liked the movie, but I didn't like that they were willing to be together despite being... you know what
And I'd be lying if I said I didn't prefer their more whimsical stuff too. But it's interesting that they can cover two completely different genres.
Estoy de acuerdo.

Does anyone know the song at 1:40 ?
Yay
I was expecting something a little more...er...magical. It is Miyazaki after all.
no for march 22 well that is how the website is showing in my area
Hello film that I cannot see. Good God, why did my back decide NOW was a good time to get injured? D:
Should I see it I think its the last week when its out
This trailer actually looks pretty weak, but as a Studio Ghibli film, I don't doubt for a second it's going to be amazing. I look forward to this, as I do all SG films!
What?! This year or next year?!
When I saw studio ghibli , I oddly watched the trailer expecting some odd mystical creature to put up, I'm slightly disappointed,, not that this won't be a great movie
The trailer makes it look way more interesting than it is... Can't say I'm a fan. It's really generic anime stuff and you'll forget it in 12 hours after seeing it. I also just don't like how studio ghibli handles romance. It's generally "omg we did something together... I love you!" My favorite Studio Glibli films are those that value family/friendship instead of "true love."
I was aware of Ghibli before Disney took control over here, and so were some of my friends. All Disney is doing is bring 4 year olds who can't properly respect the movies for what they truly are. I even watch the later movies in original Japanese, since not only does disney pick crappy actors who think they can sing just because they've been on TV, but they change the dialogue and the names of the characters.
Personally, I'd rather they do that because that is what makes Ghibli a household name in America. Before Disney took over the distribution of their films in the states, movies like Mononoke and Kiki fell by the wayside, where as Ponyo and Spirited Away became incredibly popular. If Disney hadn't spammed Arriety, do you think an American audience would even be aware of it?
So what is your favorite Studio Glibli film that handles non-love relationships?
I thought it was coming out the 29th
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFucking of course they wont release it anywhere near me in Florida. God dammit
ooooh it looks so great! 2:10 comes along... WTF JEFF DUNHAM IS GOING TO BE IN THIS!? Now I've GOTTA see this!

Exactly, especailly with what they did with Arrietty here in america. How they spammed disney channel on the disk and replaced the ending theme with music made by one of their actors. Pathetic.
lol thats cute ok im gonna go watch it online, save me 12 bucks
What is "generic anime stuff?" You can't really claim that an art form consisting of multiple genres can be generic when it's about as flexible in its stories as something like live action.
hey wanna see the first episode can you give me the link ? thank you !!
Well, this can't be any good. Where are the dragons, the whimsy, the Forrest gods and the Panda Scrotums? Kidding, kidding. I'm sorry, don't hate on me
is this anime?
Hm....
Nunca entenderé esa costumbre de los anglo parlantes de no asimilar las películas en su idioma original. El doblaje es distorsionador.
Calm your chest, friend.
They made another in English, said nothing? WTF TV!
I will pass.
Don't you dare compare Pixar to Ghibli. Their "let everyone be best of friends in ponyland!" Storyline in all of their poorly made movies is nothing in relation to Ghibli.
