From Trash to Treasure: The History Behind Pokémon's Toxic Card, Garbodor

Ойындар

Throughout the history of the Pokemon Trading Card Game, many different Pokemon have been represented on many different cards. Today, we’re going to take a look at all the various Garbodor cards printed over the years and how they’ve fit into the competitive metagame. One of the first Pokémon to show me that a pokemon can be panned in the video games, but a menace and respected for its “legacy” in the TCG.

I was just telling someone this the other day, but rather than mentioning garbodor I instead mentioned the bugs. So weak in the games, but great abilities in the TCG 😉

I always liked it in competitive singles along with weezing. Bulky poison types are fun

I think the Pokemon company likes doing this with unpopular Pokemon. Bibarrel? A lot of decks use him because he is a powerful draw supporter. Lumineon? A pretty useful supporter Pokemon in the tcg.

And Lugia went from a mediocre legend made basically useless due to power creep to the poster child and one of the strongest cards of Silver Tempest

It's worth noting that the second Garbodor is actually similar to Muk from the Fossil set. The only difference is that Muk's Pokémon Power instantly shut out all other Powers without requiring any Trainers or Tools. Like that Garbodor, Muk was a danger to decks that relied heavily on Powers/Abilities.

When I first started playing Pokemon TCG when Crimson Invasion released, I played this Garbodor for a good while with Regigigas (seal of antiquity) for a good while before it rotated out. The deck was so much fun for me, and is the reason why Garbodor is my favourite pokemon now.

You forgot to mention the rule change with Catcher when Boundaries Crossed came out. When the card now required a coin flip to gust a benched Pokémon meaning it was much tougher to drag Garbodor or Trubbish into the active spot. Personally I think bench blocking ability cards are bad for the game, because it kills a lot of creative decks and turns the game into an RPS format consisting off beatdown decks < ability decks < ability locking decks.

So glad to see this! Trubbish and Garbodor are my favorite Pokemon after Gen 3. I play a variety of different Garbodors in my decks too. Love to see it popping off!

Garbodor helped win the 2015 US National championship only because time got called. If Game 2 were played to conclusion, Wailord EX would have reigned supreme, and we would still be shitposting about it today.
