From the archives: Tina Turner on a life of suffering and triumph

Rock legend Tina Turner has died at 83, her spokesperson confirmed Wednesday. In this "Sunday Morning" profile that originally aired in October 2018, the eight-time Grammy-winner, renowned for such hits as "Proud Mary" and "What's Love Got To Do With It," got personal with CBS News' Gayle King as she discussed her memoir, "My Love Story," and her abusive marriage and breakup with Ike Turner.

"I have everything. When I sit at the Lake Zurich in the house that I have, I am so serene. No problems. I had a very hard life but I didn't put blame on anything or anyone, I got through it. I lived through it with no blame. I'm just a happy person." Parting wisdom from Tina at 8:50 that we can all use. RIP Tina.

Tina Turner was the perfect example as to how you go about life. She was beaten for 16 years by her husband but never labeled herself as the victim. She got herself back up, got out of that situation, and became one of the greatest singers of all time. She was a true badass and had the heart of a warrior. RIP Trina, thank you for everything! ❤

I love Tina, don't get me wrong but didn't paint herself a victim? How many books, films has been sold on her story? The story has been told to death. She is a survivor, no doubt but let's not pretend she hasn't made a mint telling her story to death

@@EJM659 to be fair Art, I’ve heard Tina state in other interviews that she really did not want to talk about her past with Ike, but people just kept bringing it up. I’ve seen one interview so far where the interviewer didn’t focus on her past but asked Tina for advice for the people listening. In my opinion, it was a great interview because Tina discussed meditation and prayer and ‘Food for the Mind.’ And I thought, wow, Tina had so much wisdom about focusing on the positive and taking care of your mental health and so wished the interview would have lasted longer. Wish people would’ve interviewed her more on her personal growth.

One of the things I loved best about Tina, aside from her singing and her style, was the fact that you didn't hear crazy stuff, like too many crazy cosmetic surgeries and weirdness, about her. Such a shame, and a shock to hear that this great lady has passed on, she had an electric personality that nobody else could have matched. She just did her job, no agenda, just hit the stage, sang and danced her heart out for her fans, no political issues, she was just the consummate performer. RIP, Tina, simply the best 🙏🙏🙏

In honor of Tina Turner for her life of strength, resilience, courage--Here is an excerpt from Steps to Knowledge. "Be strong today. Follow the plan that is given to you. Do not hold yourself back or alter the instructions in any way. There are no shortcuts here; there is only the direct way... Be strong today.. You must have faith in your strength and exercise this faith to realize your strength...Allow your mind to be freed of the chains of its own concepts. Allow your body to be freed of a tormented mind. In this your mind and your body will settle into their natural function, and all things will fall into right order within you. Knowledge will then find expression through your mind and through your body. From this you will be able to bring into the world that which is greater than the world, and your life will be confirmed as a result." (STK, Marshall Vian Summers)

I saw a concert by TINA TURNER about forty years ago and since that evening I have never forgotten her: she possessed a black VOICE of rare beauty: powerful in any tonality: from very bluesy low timbres to ever higher notes that went up and up UP TO THE SKY. He was an "enchanting" stage ANIMAL: he possessed charm, beauty and physique "to spare". Observing TINA, it was understood very well that for HER singing was PURE FUN, therefore, thanks to this STRENGTH OF HER, she was able to "infect" all the audience present right from the first song. Just for the record, it should be NOTED that he has always had a lot of taste in selecting EXCELLENT MUSICIANS and GOOD CHOIR SINGERS to take with him on tour, especially in the 70s and 80s. TINA TURNER is one of the greatest ROCK singers in the HISTORY OF MUSIC and will ALWAYS remain ALIVE in our most beautiful musical memories...!!! R.I.P. TINA 🎤👏👏👏💔❤

I listened to Jazz and Blues and knew her music, while to the Disco kids around me she was somebody totally new. She had shifted one generation back. I know of NO artist who managed to do that seccessfully and permanently. ❤

Very sad to learn of her passing...BUT... I am SO glad that her later years were happy, peaceful ones filled with love and kindness. After all she endured in her early years, she absolutely deserved it! She is of course most famous for her music (and dance!) but, she's also just an all-round great lady who inspires me with her grit, fortitude, and ability to take a positive from something negative. She embodies so much of what I aspire to be. She is, was, and always will be, a legend. R.I.P. wonderful lady.
