From Prison to Principal | Lukas Carey | TEDxUWA

Have you ever made a mistake? Lukas has, and it continues to follow him around and will do so forever. Lukas articulates that the choice to let the mistake own him or for him to own the mistake is his and his alone. Turning negatives into positives, using lived experience to help others and using mental strength to get through periods of adversity are all areas for discussion in this talk as you will be taken through my journey ‘From Prison to Principal’. Dr Lukas Carey completed his Doctorate in Education, working in the field for most of his career as a coach, teacher, trainer, and educator. While filling a role in Australian local government he was charged with and convicted of receiving secret commissions and served time in prison.
During and since Lukas’ incarceration, he developed a strong interest in the role that previously incarcerated people have in the development of policy and procedure in the justice system concerned with education, recidivism, and post-release employment.
As a current CARE school principal working with young people removed from mainstream schooling, he shares his insightful experiences firsthand with young people. Lukas is also a strong advocate for the importance of Lived Experience in all forms of education and the importance of including the voices and experiences of all. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Your candor and vulnerability are key to this powerful message. You bring the topic the real, deep lived experience which is what is needed to address the impact on the person of return to society post prison. Recommended viewing for all politicians.
