Diagnosed with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, Kabir was born prematurely at 31 weeks and spent 40 days in the NICU. After receiving many surgeries including two open heart surgeries and an angioplasty, Kabir’s parents were afraid he would not catch up to his peers. When he came to Shea, Kabir, age seven, had difficulty sustaining upright posture and relied on his hands to maintain balance in sitting and standing. Physical therapy utilizing hippotherapy at The Shea Center allowed him to gain strength and confidence to overcome his fear of falling. He continues to build his balance and coordination with the ultimate goal of walking without assistance.
Kabir can now stand unassisted for 10 seconds, a huge accomplishment for him and his parents. His mom says, “He is very proud to say he rides horses. It’s his thing and he has gained so much confidence from it.”
