From Gang Member to Christ: Casey Diaz Interview - The Becket Cook Show Ep. 94

In today’s episode, I chat with Casey Diaz about his book, “The Shot Caller: A Latino Gangbanger’s Miraculous Escape from a Life of Violence to a New Life in Christ.” His story will absolutely amaze you! The son of El Salvadorian immigrants, Casey Diaz was brought to Los Angeles at the age of two. An abusive, impoverished family life propelled Casey at only eleven years of age into the Rockwood Street Locos gang. Casey was willing to do anything to be number one, but years of chasing rival gang members led to a dramatic ambush and arrest by the LAPD.
At just sixteen, Casey was sentenced to more than twelve years in solitary confinement in California’s toughest prison as one of the state’s most violent offenders. He thought his life was over.
Yet, when a determined elderly woman paid Casey a visit, a whole new world of possibilities began to unfold. Casey scoffed as she quietly insisted God was going to use him. As the days in solitary wore on, Casey realized Someone else was calling the shots. What happened next can only be described as a miracle.

ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from Austin College in Texas, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

I just ordered his book. I served in a prison ministry for 9 years in the Florida Department of Corrections. I have met several born again Christians in prisons. Some of my closest brothers and sisters in Christ were convicted murders. Remember that Jesus said those who have been forgiven for much would be the greatest servants of the Lord. I believe it!

As I listened to Casey Diaz's experience in prison and the two years of beatings he endured, I am reminded of Paul and his many imprisonments after he became a disciple of Jesus. Casey's journey is one of the most telling and graphic depictions of what prison is like; the jargon, the cliques, solitary, all of it. Thank you, Becket for allowing him to tell this very inspirational story. God bless.

This is amazing!!! I also had an encounter with Jesus in a dream about 5 years after I was saved, but still at a very dark place in a very broken marriage. After the dream I woke up with no memory of it and went about my usual daily routine. It wasn’t until the next evening while I was making dinner for my kids that the memory of the dream came back to me all at once, like a movie reel in brilliant living colors. Without going into detail, I remember clearly that in the dream Jesus told me with nothing but a deep love that I’d never known or imagined that he died for the whole world, but he was dealing only with me in that very tender moment. The overwhelming peace and inexpressible love I felt in that dream sustains me to this day-well over fifteen years later. I’m so grateful to be the adopted, chosen daughter of the Most High, thanks be to Jesus! Thank you for sharing this beautiful, miraculous testimony. 💟✝️💜

This is SO amazing. The way he described just knowing Jesus was looking at him without being able to make out any facial features reminds me of when God gave me a vision several years ago. Jesus was standing behind me and I didn’t see his smile but I felt, and knew he was smiling. Also when he talks about that unexplainable peace, I felt that too and it makes me cry just thinking that God has given those moments to his children. It’s so moving ❤
