Most tickets are available 90 days in advance, but some may be much less due to planned infrastructure works, strikes etc. If you're trying to book this specific train that you commented on then it's not necessary to book in advance, there will always be tickets available on the day.

Hi, the half train in Tapolca is a M61 Nohab which is a very famous loco. That specific one had an accident 20 years ago, and the half of it was cut off and then placed in front of the Museum Of Transport, then it was moved to Tapolca.

June 4, 1999 - Hungary - MÁV train No. 1973 from Tapolca to Budapest Déli Pályaudvar travelling at 78 km/h (48 mph) collides with a tree brought down across tracks by a heavy storm near Badacsonylábdihegy at 5:09 PM. Two carriages derail and the M61 004 NOHAB engine overturns and is damaged beyond repair. The remaining part of the engine stands at Tapolca station. Nobody, including driver Tamás Szűcs, is injured seriously.

The accident was a huge loss because the No. 4 locomotive was designated to be preserved by the Transport Museum for posterity after the entire Nohab fleet was dismantled. The Nohabs have a huge cult in Hungary. Tapolca was their base for a long time, traveling to Lake Balaton, the atmosphere of the holiday was determined by these locomotives in the 70's and 80's. They were bought out and renovated by railway lovers, and they still operate these locomotives. Every year they visit Tapolca and organize other special trips with them. Here, the Nohabs, still operating today, pay tribute to the scene of the 1999 accident. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nYZrqLuyhJfemdY.html

@@balazspetho5636 As a Swede, it is nice to hear that the Nohab trains have a following in Hungary. Sadly the Nohab company went bankrupt in 1979, but you can still see some of their trains on the Swedish railways. I know that the company "Svensk Tågkraft" uses at least a few of them when hauling freight.

I like your positive yet accurate style how you evaluate the Hungarian railways. Some of my favorite routes are - Füzesabony-Debrecen in the summer, by an open window. First a looong bridge over the Lake Tisza nature reserve area, flocks of waterfowl startled by the train and getting into the air. Then over the Hortobágy (you won't see much just the plains but that's the point) - Line from Veszprém to Győr, and line from Eger to Szilvásvárad are two scenic sections of track. - Budapest sightseeing route from Kelenföld to Keleti

I agree with your impression: MAV does the best it can with what she's got in her hands. One final comment: what is there to do in Tapolca? I see it is situated not on the lake shore, correct? Is there any castle, museum or similar at the city itself? As usual, great video! Cheers🍻

I have lived in downtown Budapest for the last two years and love it! Escaped the UK issues for business. I love all the old trams 2, 2M, 47,49 I use much of the time. Most other routes have a mix of very good aged trams and vey good modern trams. The Metro 1, the second oldest underground outside of London as I believe, reminds me of an old Bond film, lovely old stations. Metro 2 has new trains, can't fault it. M3 system being refurbished and will be very good, I remember going on some of the old Soviet Metro 3 trains many years ago and loved them. I have been busy working in Budapest and not had much chance in getting out much other than to Ceglédbercel from Nyugati pályaudvar a very quiet modern train (vonat). I keep being told to go to Lake Balaton in summer, I hope to go this year so thank you for the information. I went to Deli pályaudvar a few weeks ago for the first time and yes you are right it is not as good as the other train stations (pályaudvar) but better than most UK have. All trains and trams I have taken have all ways been on time.

Thanks for this report. If you want some input from your readers, let's say that I've travelled the length and breadth of Hungary since the 1990s. Last time I was in the country was in 2020. They have decent railways, not terribly fast and not terribly modern but correct and decent, especially so if you consider their very light prices. Let's say that MÁV is a typical Central European railway company. I enjoy travelling with them.

I haven’t been to Hungary in 7 years but I have a lot of good memories of riding the rails of Hungary as a kid. MÁV might not be the best railway in Europe but it’s definitely not the worst, and it has only improved since then. The coaches you were in are some of the newest additions to the MÁV fleet. Unfortunately, Canada’s railway operator VIA Rail doesn’t come close to the quality of MÁV. If I had to chose one to ride for the rest of my life, I’d choose MÁV in a heart beat. Especially considering MÁV has a robust network covering a good portion of the country.

Also, the coaches were made by CAF, spanish rail producer, which is also famous for longest trams in the world, which were delivered to the same country (the Urboses were delivered to Budapest and Debrecen, of which, the part of those delivered to former one are recordists).

As always a very informative and clear video from my top reporter. (I've just deleted a couple of others for mispronouncing place names by trying to be clever and using the local language - and failing, never drying their hands properly after visiting the loo (I hate seeing poor hygiene, especially in todays climate) and for attempting to be a professional travel reporter which they ALWAYS fail to do. In fact, you couldn't take the same train and travel in the same coaches in 2011. The compartment coaches, that Nonstop Eurotrip travelled in, were built originally in the 90s in Hungary and Germany, mostly for international routes. They came to the Lake Balaton in the past few years, when they were fully renovated and modernised with power sockets and USB ports and brand new internal and external design. The non-intercity open-saloon coaches were built in the 90s too, originally for the new Ganz Bdvmot EMUs, which were new back then. Even the Kék Hullám sebesvonat ("semi-fast" train) didn't exist before 2013. In 2011, you probably could have taken one of the really old Bhv, Bo, or (maybe?) B coaches. Those were all 30-50 years old then already, and I believe that they haven't got any major renovations since their birth. Those really deserve the "Roxfort Express" nickname that you all gave it, and some of them are still in use these days, mostly on other train lines.

I used to enjoy these prices of the trains in Hungary every summer. Indeed the are more late, than our German ones, but the price is unbeatable, compared to "German" Prices. I am sure, between Siofok-Keszthely/Balatongyörök (or further) you can travel in the "fast train part" (even on Balaton IC and Topart IC) without any suplementary ticket. But these can get quite crowded during the summer season. I also enjoy the 50% discount for students until they turn 27. In Germany you pay the full fare when you turn 15 :(. I used to say the old Stock is great compared to the uncomfy Flirt und Bomardier Talent Seats.

The seat reservation and the supplementary ticket costs the same for everyone, which makes sense IMO.

On your trip you passed by a village named "Ábrahámhegy" (pls look to Google Maps) between Balatonfüred and Tapolca. There I spend my summer-holidays for many years. Is the northern route to Tapolca electrified until Balatonfüred? The last time I traveled along this route, the loco-exchange was in Székesfehérvár. When did you traveled there? And where did you go from Tapolca?

The text at 9:30 is a bit confusing. You write about today's method of changing the loomotives at Balatonfüred however it is clearly seen that there are no catenary either in Füred or Almádi on the video, those were made at least a year before. However the electrification of the line between Füred and Tapolca is far from being in progress, due to the lack of proper funding or political will.

One question. Why didn't you publish this video last year? The conditions of the railway shown in the review are outdated now. It would be better if you had mentioned in the video that some things have been changed since then. You even say at Balatonfüred station that the loco is changing there. Yes, this is the current situation, but when you recorded this content , this actually happened in Székesfehérvár. I really don't know why did you publish this review just this year, but in my opinion, you would have present this as a non-current footage, as it really is. I don't think anyone would be mad at you, but everyone would be well informed about the visual appearance and running smoothness of the tracks. I didn't spot that in the video (only the date in the description), but correct me if I missed something. In fact, this little problem isn't nearly as important as much I wrote about it. 😂😂 By the way, I always find your videos very informative and entertaining. I get especially excited when you publish a video about my homeland. You and Kuhár Bence (hungarian youtuber with 38k subs) are my favourite railways related content creators. Keep it up!💪 Várunk vissza! 🇭🇺

Thank you, nonstop eurotrip! Oh no !!!!!!!!!!! You traveled in compartment, and more !!! You paid extra for this!!! How awful. I hate compartments. That said, your video is well edited, I like it. On the other hand, we have problems with the Internet. It had broken down all day, normally tomorrow mom has to go get something from the store to boost the modem. But as they no longer make modems, it will be necessary to wait for the fiber which will normally be installed on the 22nd. It's very long, and I won't have the Internet until then, and maybe more... sniff sniff sniff... In addition, in our neighborhood, the fiber works very badly. Well, we don't know. We are in deep shit.

The internet has been fixed, but we still don't have fiber. Can't wait for them to install it for us on the 22nd, especially since they have changed the visiting hours several times. 2h30 it lasts they told us. In addition, I will FINALLY be able to play with my console quickly, and download purchased games quickly.
