I’m new to the channel and appreciate your content. I shoot with the Canon R5 and 100-500. There is no monster prime in my future. I shoot manual with auto ISO. I do struggle with low light at 7.1 aperture on the long size. In the early hours I usually shoot wide open at F 7.1 or F8, and use exposure compensation to increase the exposure and ISO. There can be a fair amount of noise, which can be cleaned up, but I feel the images suffer in sharpness also due to lack of light. That’s my opinion of course. I would appreciate some advice in future videos in this series addressing this type of gear and the challenges. I’ve been considering changing away from evaluative metering recently to center point or something else, but I’m not sure that would help. Thanks!

Hi Kelly, thanks for watching my videos! I will totally cover it in one of my next ones, but Ill also address it here. Unfortuatnely, theres just nothing you can really do. You are just locked in beacuse of your aperture and minimum shutter speeds. If you are not using a tripod, thats something you can try, becuse you can bring your shutter speed much lower. If my subject isnt moving, I will bring my shutterspeed all the way down to about 1/200th in low light. Obviously if it is moving, you cant do that. But its something you can try! Changing your metering isnt going to help much because its just reading the light differently. The 100-500 is a wonderful, sharp lens, but really struggles in low light sitautions because of the aperture unfortunaetly. I would definitely always try and keep it at F 7.1 unless its super bright out. Its very very sharp wide open, and I never felt the need to stop it down! I hope that helps, and let me know if you have any other questions!
