The Amiga Years! is a feature film documentary that explores the influence of the Commodore Amiga and how it influenced a generation of developers to take video game development, music and publishing to a whole new level which then changed the video game industry forever!
This film, which is the sequel to the acclaimed 'From Bedrooms to Billions' (2014) looks at the creation of the now legendary Commodore Amiga a remarkable and very personal tale told by the surviving team members themselves. The film then goes onto explore how once released in 1985 the Commodore Amiga helped evolve the video games industry as a whole new set of games and experiences were possible thanks to its incredible custom hardware. Many of these styles of games, music and demos as well as development techniques honed during the Amiga era are still present in the video games industry we know today.
Interviews include the creators of Populous, The Secret of Monkey Island, Sensible World of Soccer, Defender of the Crown, Syndicate, Alien Breed, Wings, Shadow of the Beast, Turrican II, The First Samurai, Another World, Flashback and many many others.
This film will be of great interest to anyone who enjoys either games or the history of the quite remarkable video games industry.

I had the privilege to enjoy 3 Amiga's computers that i had in the 90' : Amiga 1000, 500, 1200. I really miss those days and to this Amiga great computer, I wish Amiga computers will come back and will replace all PC & Apple computers in the market. :-)

I had a similar experience seeing DOTC running on an Amiga for the first time in a small independent shop. I guess it was probably...1986? I don't think I'd seen an Amiga up close before and I was just amazed. Love at first sight, and the very first encounter of a long and beautiful relationship...

Yes, the Commodore Amiga was way to advanced for its time, but I do miss it. Had the Commodore Amiga HD 2000.

How nice to see ex-Sony Shahid from Relay.fm’s Remaster podcast in the movie but a little disappointing to not see his name shown on-screen when you first see him interviewed 😳. All other participants get named apart from him! Wha’ daaaaa??!!

The main problem with arcade to home conversions was that the software companies usually hired inexperienced/incompetent programmers to handle the conversions, and even when they had decent programmers, the coinop companies offered virtually no help so they had to basically work from scratch. That's not to say that I think every home system could replicate every arcade game, but probably 99% of then could have been much better than they were if more care and resources had been allocated to them. I mean who doubts that the Amiga could have handled a version of Outrun that looked almost pixel perfect instead of the putrid mess that got released? I also feel the need to mention that I *LOVE* Jim Sachs' artwork. I used to collect everything I could find by him. It's too bad that he wasn't able to make his 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea game, or finish Time Crystal.

I love the Amiga. I had the chance to buy an Amiga or a sega genesis when I was a kid. I chose the sega genesis as my step dad would not let me buy an amiga because at the time he said Amiga was out of business.

And not ONE mention of the man who made it all possible. Not once did I hear the name "Jay Miner" from ANYONE. Without Jay, there'd be no Amiga. I sold all my Amiga's long ago, except for one. I kept my Amy 3000/40. It had a 386 BB, a Picasso graphics card and "Shapeshifter" (from Chrisian Bauer) installed for Mac emulation. About 5 years ago a guy offered me a pile of money for it, so out the door she went. And while I'm at it, let's give Dave Haynie a bit of credit too. :-)

I personally think that many arcade conversions on the Amiga and Atari ST where lacking in the gameplay compared to how well the C64 and ZX Spectrum conversions where. Not always, of course, but a lot of times.

  • @KaitainCPS

+fandenivoldsk Actually DOTC is itself a good example of a title that ended up playing better on the 8-bit machines, but in that case it was because they were later conversions of the 16-bit editions, and the designers had time to introduce a number of innovations. The jousting was better, the sieges were more complex (with the greek fire and disease projectiles), the swordfighting had better mechanics, and I seem to recall the strategic choices in the army battles were more meaningful. Of course, they didn't look anywhere as good, but the C64 disk version of DOTC was the best one I remember playing.

@@KaitainCPS The Atari ST version had all the same enhancements as the others, including C64, but looked much closer to the Amiga version. I had both systems and the game on both, BITD, but I prefered to play on Amiga (and still do), due to the atmosphere created by the music/sound/graphics.

I could see that for C64 vs Atari ST, but not Amiga vs and nor Speccy vs any. Not for arcade games. I'd love to see any examples you'd like to share.

Defender of the Crown was a terrible game. All graphics and no game play. 4 out of 10 It was just a load of stills and animation that you couldn't interact with.. Classic case of "Oooooh Ahhhhh"..All smoke and mirrors. F/A 18 interceptor was ground breaking..

Defender of the crown? I played it when it came out and this is the first time I heard anyone compliment it. All graphics, zero gameplay. They talk about the graphics but that felt more like a con than anything else. The gameplay was terrible. Everyone said so at the time.
