From Ambulance to the Ultimate Video Production Truck - In Depth Tour

Фильм және анимация

The request has been fulfilled! Without further ado, we present the in depth grip/camera truck tour!
We converted an old ambulance into an equipment hauling machine. We've added all the bells and whistles like new tires, a lift kit, LED light bars, a 4x4 box, L track, custom shelving, a rooftop speedrail container and lots more. Tag along as Keenan takes us through every detail about the build process and the reasoning behind our decision to go with an ambulance.

    Keenan, you guys are sick! Your grip truck rocks. We use a Freightliner hotshot to attend model airplane events and pack cameras along with models for me to play with, so I'm always on the lookout for ideas for improving my mobile workshop. Two things you may wish to consider in future; a generator, and provisions for rooftop access for filming from above.

    Of course you post this right after I make a purchase of a dodge ram promaster city and build it out as a 1 ton grip truck haha. Cool to see your breakdown and makes me kind of want to do a break down video of my own. I love seeing practical content like this for us working in the industry to brain storm our own builds and workflows.

    Hey, great video and an awesome truck! Thanks for an in depth tour! If some day I have a big enough production going on I'm totally ripping off this "repurpose an ambulance" idea! (wishful thinking, yeah) A question: do you keep a lot of valuable gear in there or do you load and unload a lot of stuff every time you have to move to a shoot? Or do you have a secure parking space/garage and can just not worry about anything inside the car?

    I'm currently doing a van build where I don't want to mount anything permanent in the van. So I love your use of L-track and milk crates, I plan on doing much the same. 🥰 I want to be able to scrap a cheaply bought van and replace it as necessary with little effort. If an engine or transmission fails, I can't afford to repair it, so I'm better off selling it for parts and replacing it with another cheap beater.

    Hey @Threefold. I am converting an ambulance to a camper and would love to know the rooftop racking solution you used? Were any holes needed at all in the roof (or additional supports in the middle of the spans)? Which mounts were used to attach to the rain gutters, and what sort of rails? Any info would on that topic be super helpful and very much appreciated!

  • @threefoldtv

    @threefoldtv

    We just green treated plywood and 2x4s stained black. It was definitely the cost saving route but has worked really well and would do it again. We did not drill any hole in the roof as the clamps we used seemed to be sufficient. We also didn't use any supports in the middle, and havnt had any problems. We've never had more than two people up there at once though so it depends on how much weight you put up there. We used Smitty built roof rack clamps for the top. That 'wierd green floor' was linoleum, an eco friendly product. It would have been much easier to clean, very durable, and cushioned just as well as your rubber gym floor. Not sure why this was changed. All your exterior storage small cabinets could have an extra shelf put in to be more efficiently packed. Seems like a lot of extra space in each. "It works very GOOD for us" is wrong grammar. Seems to be an American disease. Try "It works very WELL for us". Your English teacher will be happy. Nice build for a mobile studio! Well done.
