Fringe 3x09 "Marionette - Peter/Olivia End Scene "She wasn't me."

Ойын-сауық

This is the MOST HEARTBREAKING SCENE between Peter and Olivia ever. Not only of the episode, but of the entire show.
Anna Torv, you are EXTRAORDINARY. Josh Jackson, you're not bad yourself, but I'm sorry to say, Anna stole the episode! AMAZINGLY HEARTBREAKING FROM BEGINNING TO END!
Olivia: You know what Barrett said? He said that he looked into her eyes, and he knew that it wasn't her. ... I understand the facts. I know that she had reams of information about me, and about my life, and about the people that were close to me. And I understand that if she slipped up, she would have a completely reasonable explanation for it, and I guess to expect you to have seen past that is perhaps asking a little bit too much. But when I was over there, I thought about you, and you were just a figment of my imagination, but I held on to you, and it wasn't reasonable, and it wasn't logical, but I did it, so, why didn't you? She wasn't me. How could you not see that? Now, she's everywhere; she's in my house, my job, my bed, and I don't wanna wear my clothes anymore and I don't wanna live in my apartment, and I don't wanna be with you. She's taken everything.
Peter (when Olivia's gone): I'm sorry.

For everyone questioning Peter’s silence, he’s grieving too. He’s watching the relationship he didn’t even get to have with the woman he loves implode and there isn’t anything he can say or do about it. He knows he screwed up. He knows he should’ve seen it. His heart is just as broken as hers, because he has no idea what to do or say to take her pain away. There’s also a part of him that’s grieving the loss of Alt-Liv, he was beginning to build a life with her, but she used him and seemingly took away the future he was trying to build with Olivia.

Peter was equally screwed here. He had thought he had gotten what he wanted, was enjoying it, and had the rug pulled out from under him. All those happy moments, all under false pretenses. He was probably feeling like the worst person in the world.

I think the reason Peter sat there and "took it" without saying anything, was because he knew she deserved to let all her feelings out. Plus, what could Peter possibly say to make Olivia feel better? The only words he knows how to say he does actually say, which is, "I'm sorry." I thought both their reactions were spot on and well done to both Anna and Josh on their acting.

I really liked the way Fringe dealt with this. It's a complicated, messy, painful situation for both of them and both actors do a superb job of conveying that. You can feel Peter's pain and guilt and shame (and how he's holding back because he knows Olivia needs to grieve) and Olivia's utter raw feeling of betrayal in their performances. Peter's belief that Altlivia was his Olivia and Olivia's complete breakdown are both so believable and realistic. What a fantastic (painful!) show.

This whole scene is brilliant, but my very favorite thing is when she says "and I don't want to be with you" because the music just cuts out and lets the words hang there and the audience can just kind of absorb them for a second and it's just perfect. Absolutely perfect.

I actually like Peter's reaction to Olivia's unheaval. It's truer to his character. He's always been this stoic, poker-faced, internally emotional man. It's part of what made him a great con-man, he hardly ever gives away what he's truly feeling. Having said that, you can tell he's upset by what Olivia says, that he feels horrible for her about the sitaution. It's just not obvious. You have to look for his "tells". The way he breaths, the way he looks at her, the way he doesn't, etc.

For me, it's the way he lets her leave. He knows there's nothing he can say or do to change how she feels in that moment, so he just listens. He lets her get it out - uninterrupted - and once she has walked away he just whispers "I'm sorry". Because that's the truth. He is *truly* sorry. And the best apology is changed behavior. Later, he refuses to allow himself even the possibility of being fooled ever again. He turns down *his* Olivia because he *needs* to be sure. Peter changed his behavior because*that's* how much he loves Olivia. He wants to be the best possible version of himself because that's what he believes his Olivia deserves.

This scene kills me every single time I watch it, it's beyond heartbreaking. Anna Torv played this so well and what frustrates me so much now is that this episode was put forward for Emmy consideration. Her portrayal of what she went through having to reintegrate herself back into her life when someone else had been living it, how hard it was realising what happened, and then this powerful scene where everything she'd worked for and wanted wasn't there any more, she played it perfectly, and few other actors could ever come close to this.

This show is a masterclass in psychology, more specifically grief and bereavement. Olivia goes through the 5 stages of grief throughout these 3 episodes until she forgives Peter. She works through the issues just like a therapist would recommend (I should know, I am one). When she reads the notes Altlivia wrote on Peter she came to a realization that Peter fell for it because Altlivia actually cared for Peter, it became more than a mission. She also started to see that Peter was just as embarrassed and violated as she was. I think that helped her cope, knowing that he felt the same way.

She was going to be murdered in the most horrible way, she was a prisoner in an entire world with no escape, she went through extreme brainwashing, and she comes back to find the situation as it was with the alternate Olivia. I was never able to forgive what the alternate Olivia, or Walter, or the others from that world did to her.

Olivia Dunham is my favorite fictional character and, in my opinion, one of the best examples of a " strong character", male or female. Hollywood seems to think a "strong female character" is a woman who has total confidence and/or unmatched natural abilities, but I couldn't disagree more. Olivia is strong because of her self-doubt and moments of vulnerability. She has the courage and the will to do what she needs to do, even when she is emotionally falling apart on the inside. Season 3 episode 1 is a great example. She is on the run and trying to get back to her universe, stops at a gas station to cry in the bathroom, then comes out and keeps going. It's admirable.

Anna Torv is an amazing actor. I hope when this ends (and ends well, please god, not with a whimper but a bang) she has plenty of opportunities lined up - cool movies, cool shows, lots of money. I think it's an interesting perspective that maybe Peter liked the other Olivia better. I don't think it's true, but I think it makes sense that he might have liked her as that character too - she's more of an asshole, living more in the moment, more self-promoting, really more like Peter himself.

There are some scenes where I love Olivia - Anna and there are some scenes where I love Peter- Josh and even more where I can't decide who was the best. This scene falls into the last category because while this scene was about Olivia and she did an awesome job, Peter just sits there and takes it and I just have to wonder what is going through his head; does he finally understand what Walter did or is he just crushed by what he did?

If I were him I would see these changes as Olivia opening up to me, letting me in. I really don't think he preferres the other Olivia, what he said in season two, in my opinion, was his way of distancing himself from the everything and everyone from the other side. The brunette hair meant change, a difference. So at the time he liked it.

I'm struggling whether I should "like" it or not! On one hand this scene is brilliantly done by Anna Torv. On the other hand, this is just tragic! To an extent I hate it so much that I'll have to dislike it!

@AwesomeAuror I agree. I don't think for the character, and for the audience, that the relationship could be continued in that way without it being extremely awkward. Hopefully, however, the 'family unit' that it was referred to in season 2 can be restored.

I love this scene. I was totally mesmerized by Olivia's heart-wrenching speech. You could really feel how much pain she was in and how disappointed Peter made her feel. The one thing I've got to say about this scene is that I was let down by Peter's whole demeanor while listening to her. Where was the pain in the eyes? the shame for what he did? He may have said 'sorry' at the end (AFTER she had left) but I didn't really get that he wholeheartedly meant it. Just MY opinion.

Peter did see differences, like how she was faster to smile, but maybe he thought he was doing those things, making her happier. He thought she had changed. And Olivia tried to forgive Peter, tried to suppress the fact that she was just not ok with it, but she just isn't ok with it. It's not rational, it doesn't make sense, but she loved him when he shouldn't be real, and she can't forget that he didn't realize that the person he was sleeping with, having a relationship with, wasn't even her.

@Damon242 That would be nice. Going back to the family is probably the best path this show can take, and I really hope they don't force Peter and Olivia back together. It would look unnatural and contrived at this stage. And "Fringe Friday Family" just sounds really funny.

@MrSmackism Well, I certainly hope that Peter doesnt prefer Alt-livia, although someone like Astrid might say that Peter did seem pretty happy when he was seein' Alt-livia. If the writers somehow bring back Agent Scott from the first season through the same reanimation techniques done on the ballerina and have Scott and Liv reunite, that would upset a lot of viewers and me also.

@sophie22delco YES, Olivia is definitely the victime here, since Altlivia stole her life and 'lover' along with everything else. But I think Peter is a victime too. He was used and manipulated by Altlivia, she used his love for Olivia, and he thought she was her, and now he's going to have to deal with the pain he's inflicting her and the guilt. It's just...I wouldn't want to be any of them right now.

I was a hardcore Polivia shipper. I loved them together. I was so excited every time they made progress in their relationship. But after this episode, all of those feelings were gone. Now they're back in the same universe and I no longer see them as a good couple. I can't see it ever working out because of what they both did and are doing, and I honestly don't want it to. Not now anyway. I think I've always known Peter and Olivia would never really be together and now I can finally accept it.

yes i believe that they r both victims, even though peter had it easier, but she shouldnt blame him., and he shouldnt blame altivia. walternate was behind the switching order between altivia and olivia..and altivia was just following orders, she believes that there really is a war between the two universes, and developed real feeling for peter during the assignment. but still im glad peter is letting her take it out on him, he wants her to feel better,

@MayBrainLee1 You're done with this show because I said "You're not bad yourself"? O_o Okay. You know, when I say that, I mean that he was great too, right (there's a hint of humour here but I guess you missed it). If I didn't like his acting I would have said "Josh, you sucked dude, sorry." I thought he was great, but Anna Torv just had more opportunities to show it in this episode. Chill out.

Yeah maybe he should've notice it wasn't her, but she isn't the most talkative person out there and neither is he, and if they weren't so closed with each other he could have notice it wasn't her. They just don't know each other completely. /end meaningless rant.

Anna Torv showing her beauty and talent in this scene among many. Watching the show after all these years, it's no coincidence this scene is scripted to minimize JoshJ's lines. He's a terrible actor only capable of playing a guy who's "witty" or "smart". Anna deserved better. Outside of JJ, the cast was overwhelmingly very talented and I love Fringe!

In my opinion, Olivia was the victim here. I mean, if you really love somebody then you should know her well even if the other one has the exact same face and body. If you really love someone then you'll know. Peter ignored the signs because even though the back of his head was screaming "THAT NOT OLIVIA" he ignored it and played into Alt-olivia's hand willingly while Olivia suffered at the alternate universe. tsk tsk bad Peter
