Fringe (2008-2013): What Happened to this Show?

Ойын-сауық

I have this really bad habit when I watch new shows. I am always late to the party. It happens all the time. I watch a pilot of a TV show, write it off and then years later I find out it's an incredible piece of work. Community, Brooklyn 99, Superstore, and Babylon 5 are a few that come to mind. It's frustrating because I miss out on so much fun, like talking to other fans about the show, conventions, and fun marketing. Sure, you can still do many of these things after the show but, like a fresh slice of pizza, it always tastes better fresh out of the oven. Fringe is another slice that I have had to microwave. The series followed a quirky scientist, an estranged criminal son, and a badass FBI agent on some dark and fascinating twists and turns. These would involve alternate dimensions, time travel, and a cow.
The show is tragically underrated and sometimes gets lost in the shuffle. But is Fringe as special as many fans claim it is? Or was my original opinion of Fringe being yet another X-files knockoff correct? Luckily you have me to serve you a fresh slice of awesome, in this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but in my opinion it did run out of steam after a few seasons and the plots became more and more absurd. But that's kind of standard for shows that have that many episodes: the creators run out of original ideas and seem to go wild.

It doesn’t matter where the name originated from, the fact that they felt the need to demean her as a Black woman was beyond the pale. Her fear of being replaced is real and not uncommon. A Black actress on ‘The Rookie’ spoke out about sexual harassment and instead of handling the problem she was forced to leave the show. Acting is already a difficult gig and to have to be subjected to racism knowing that the default of many white people, those in power in these situations is be dismissive and angry about being called out makes your comment particularly offensive.

John Noble is the MVP of Fringe, his Walter and Walternate deserved to win more awards than they did. The heartbreaking scene where Walter spends all his money dialling the wrong number and losing it on a bench. That's the essence of a fantastic character in the hands of superb actor. Not that the rest of the cast are slouches, Lance Reddick, Joshua Jackson and Anna Torv. All top drawer. Anna Torv channelling Leonard Nimoy is a sight to behold.

There's so much to say about this series...and there are so many back alleys you can follow, such as "Violet Sedan Chair," Walter's favourite band, which actually had some real, physical records seeded into select record stores here in the real world during season three. So many good episodes, but there were many mysteries that were actually "solved" (unlike Lost), such as the Beacon from season one. My favourite full-circle moment was when Walter was re-institutionalised in season 1, he sees himself standing on the balcony outside of his window. It wasn't Walternate he was seeing. It takes four seasons more to reach Black Blotter where we finally see "that" Walter again and realise what it means...THAT Walter is the real Walter, the one "our" Walter has been running from. Walternate isn't the alternate of "our" Walter...he's the alternate of THAT Walter, which "our" Walter finally re-embraces at the end of Black Blotter. Mind blowing? Hell yes. The performances were so strong. Anna Torv's interpretation of Leonard Nimoy when Olivia was "possessed" by William Bell was spot-on. Even the Observers gave strong performances, especially August. John Noble however...this show simply would not have had the impact it did without him. This was his show. I'll say this about Fringe and FOX: at least they allowed a series finale, which is more than I can say for 99.9% of the shows FOX has cancelled (from "Married with Children" to "Firefly"). Even though it was hastily and...rather bizarrely "wrapped up," at least it had an ending, and quite a strong one. By the way there's one other Fringe-related recent death worth noting, Michael Kopsa who played the sadistic Observer "Windmark" in Season Five died in 2023 as well.

I watched the series from the beginning starting around the time season 2 aired, I believe. I loved it. I have stopped watching your video at the 12 minute mark because I want to re-watch the series now. I have book-marked this video and I promise to finish it after I'm done the series.

Totally agree. It's like the cast and writers know the show is going to be canceled and their hearts aren't in it anymore. At least the series got to be finished and didn't just end abruptly with half a dozen unresolved plot points.

As a fan of both Fringe and The X-Files, Fringe was far superior. I love them both but Fringe was on another level compared to anything, any genre, in any decade. What they were able to do with special effects along with the incredible plots and twisting your brain in to a pretzel along with an amazing love story that lasted through death and multiple universes Fringe has it all. It's also one of the few great shows that stuck the landing and ended wonderfully. To top that off, the final season not only tied up loose ends but took everything you hoped they would do and did it. Using the Fringe events as weapons was pure genius and the love story is incredible not to mention the father-son relationship. Fringe is the most underrated tv show in history and I'm so glad I watched it live during its original airing. John Noble also put on an acting class in this series. Masterpiece!

I had the same experience with the pilot. I wrote the show off after watching, but I had a friend later hound me to watch the show so I picked it up around the time it was in its 3rd season. My wife and I binge-watched it to catch up and watched it from then on. Totally missed it based on the pilot, and I agree, I will never judge a show based on the pilot alone anymore. Although, not all shows are as great as Fringe... so there is that...

Fringe is the best thing JJ Abrams ever produced/wrote/directed. Better than Cloverfield. Of course, he pretty much has nothing with the show after the first season, and that's Fringe went from good to amazing. I read the comics, they were a lot of fun, and the Christa Faust books, which, sadly, were not. Wish this show had received more attention and love. For years, this was our family's "family show" to watch together. But at least FOX, in a rare case, allowed a "struggling" series to have a proper finale.

This is probably my favourite show ever. I ordered and still have September's Notebook, I named my second kitty Nikivia, - a mix of Maggie Q's Nikita and Anna Torv's Olivia(my first cat is named Buffylina after the Slayer) And it is legit my celebrity dream to one day meat John Noble and ask if i can give Walter a hug. Walter Bishop is truly The most layered character I've ever seen and I will always love this show to death. Rest in peace Leonard Nimoy and Lance Reddick❤ *correction(unless I'm wrong) 1)The Observers(the original twelve) weren't sent back to manipulate history in their favour, they were sent to find a point in time that they could invade Without causing a ripple effect through time/history that resulted in them not being created(which is essentially how We win eventually, no?) 2) The Observers weren't Aliens, they were humans from the future. Can't remember if it was September or August who said it(i think September) that they didn't even know the actual nature of their mission themselves - they were just told to observe and reportbb

What happened? It was made, became one of the best sci-fi shows ever created, and featured one of the best acting performances in television history (speaking of John Noble of course). My personal favorite Sci-Fi television series. Like Lost, it set up a lot of mysteries, but unlike Lost it manages to pay off nearly all of them and do it in an overall satisfying way.

Fringe had the same issue as the X-Files, though the X-Files managed to last way beyond its sell by date. Fringe started great, as did X-Files, but then slowly they started going way out there and the episodes and storylines got convoluted. As for Jasika having issues, It is sad, but I can't help feeling all she had to do was simply correct someone who got her name wrong ... though it is hardly a complicated name, I can only think of two ways to say it myself and neither I wouldn't imagine would be offensive to a normal person.

I loved this show from the very beginning. As someone who grew up watching The X-Files during its original run, the whole vibe of Fringe was a totally welcomed one! However, when the episodes came that revealed what had really happened to childhood Peter, and what Walter had done to keep his son in his life, my wife and I had just lost our daughter. The performance that John Noble put on screen just dug way down into my very soul. I was ugly crying for Walter and Peter - having just lost a child myself. I totally understood Walter's moves, horrible as they were and the ripple effect they ultimately had. It was at that time that this show connected with me on a whole other level. I was happy that it at least got a finale. It truly deserved it.

You're opinion of the pilot is not insane. I almost dropped the show by the 4th episode of the first season. I wanted to like it SO much but it just wasn't catching me. It wasn't until the 5th episode for some reason where it finally 'caught' me. I knew I would love it from that point forward. It's now in my top 10 favorite shows of all time. It influenced the way I watched traditional TV shows so much that I would give every traditional TV seasons (20-24 episodes) at least until the 5th episode and then decide if I would continue watching. FRINGE was absolutely AMAZING. I'm still in shock that Noble never won an Emmy for it.

As I watched the _Fringe_ pilot even it aired (I loved and watched the whole series, and have its DVD box set), I became Very Aware of John Noble's voice, wracking my brain as to why I was recognizing it. Suddenly he said Something dramatic that resonated with the movie line, "Bring wood and oil...!" and I was all, "Oh my God, it's Denethor...!" Once he was shaved that was confirmed.

John Noble was amazing. The Walter/ Walternate characters were so complex, it was an awesome performance. I felt genuinely sorry and emotional for the troubled Walter with his failing memory and the love he had for his son while being horrified at the monster that experimented on children. I have never been so conflicted with a character before, John's acting blew me away.
