This video is 2 of 2 as the main repair video that I did does not show how to get the tank out of the washing machine. So, this video provides a bit more detail on how to take the machine apart.
Visit the page above to see a longer, more detailed version of this video. And, feel free to ask me questions about the repair through the chat group. I also recently created another video showing how to get the tank out of a front loader machine: vimeo.com/24810291
If, like me, you are disappointed to find out you have to replace the entire rear shell or tank assembly ($300+) just because the bearings and seal went out on your washer.
Because of this, I have made it easy for you to complete this repair. I know that you CAN do it and I hope you take this video as an encouragement to that end:) I have research the manufactures and found the correct seal so you don't have to search that down.
The appliance parts outlets will not sell this seal or the bearings. They only sell the entire back half assembly or rear shell assembly.

I took my washing machine apart to clean the inner and outer drum, both were caked with crap, a poor design. I figured it would make sense to replace the bearings and the seal since I had everything apart and the machine is 10 years old. I looked online for a bearing and seal kit and figured out they only sell the bearings and seal as part of the rear outer drum assembly. I'm glad I kept searching You Tube and found your video. Thank you so much for selling the bearing kit. I know its a small win for the little guy but I love it when we can stick it to the man one dollar at a time. Thanks again, gave you thumbs up and subscribed, keep it up guys you reduced my stress today.

I am not a repair specialist but I followed this sequence of videos and was able to complete the bearing repair without much trouble. I did have a helluva time getting the drive shafts loose from the inner bearing. I ended up banging the inner tub out by placing a block of wood over the shaft and hitting it with a mallet. Once it came out I had to cut the inner bearing off of the shaft (very carefully). After that it was smooth sailing.

I certainly appreciate the videos. I'm a do-it-yourselfer because I like to repair things if I can. If I can't...and I come across that often, I'll leave it to the pros. Many times it just takes time and effort and you get a wonderful sense of accomplishment when it all works out.

HomeTask I went thru one of your vids where you mentioned Gabe was 9yrs old (it was his birthday if I'm not mistaken). The first thing I thought was how talented he was for someone so young & having recorded the video for the repairs you did without any issues of lighting, zooming in or finding the perfects spots to film from as you worked to allow viewers to see every part of the process without your hands disappearing behind your torso. He is quite amazing! I hope he cont's to work w/video cameras & perhaps even photography cameras b/c he's done extremely well! My youngest daughter will be a senior in the fall along w/starting her 4th year in photojournalism & on the yearbook staff where she will be the year's 50th editor of the 50th yearbook & the 50th birthday of the school. The ideas she has to keep the yearbook personal & to honor those who came before her is the points she is striving for this year & I hope she can make her dreams she's thought about for 2 years now come true when she has she becomes the 'senior chief editor.' Gabe is definitely talented; I hope he cont's to follow video recording, esp if there's a class at his school that covers videoing, even if it's with the drama club/dept or other such classes. He can go far with this talent b/c his videos have improved from each I watch! Please let him know there's at least one person on YT who thinks he has amazing talent. This isn't his dad saying so - it's a stranger to your family who happened to need information & your videos gives them, with the much needed assistance of your son. Thanks for your talented information as well! I still haven't found what I was looking for with my HE3T but I sent you a note to find out if you knew what is happening so hopefully I can find out what needs repairing & then show DH so he & a friend or brother can work on my front-loader. (I NEVER EVER want to use a top-loader again)

Dave, Yes, many repair folks do but many people, especially in this economy, can't afford the hundreds for a new machine(s). The good machines are over $1000 each. Anyway, this method allows them to get a few years more out of their machine for less than $100 repair cost. I repaired my machine & it lasted for several more years until a main spring broke & when it did it was on high spin & it broke the spider inside & cracked the housing. Some repair guys get kits from me too! Thanks-Jerrod

Watched the video with the unit already out and it looked like a piece of cake. Ordered bearings/seal for my frigidaire...then watched the video of the two of you in action. I'm a pretty good handyman and it still took me 8-hours but I had to remove a dryer from the top first. I recommend wearing a heavy long-sleeved shirt as the surface edges are sharp. My washer looked like a bloody crime scene.

If you read these 4 postings from the last one first they will make make sense. It doesn't matter where you strike the old bearings to get them out. NEVER strike the race of any new bearing to get it in. Try this, lightly tap the outer bearing race just to get it started, then mount your OLD cleaned bearing on top of the new one, striking the outer race @ 12 - 6 - 9 & 3 o'clock untill its all the way down. Use this same method on the other bearing as well. Use the 2X4 sled to reinstall the tub.

On this particular model the concrete counterbalance is actually pinched in aganist the plastic by the two screws. If you loosen the screw nuts you can actually pull out the weight straight out towards you easily. This makes it easier to remove the suspension springs and to pull the drum out.

One person could do the whole operation if it were not for the springs. Disconnecting and connecting them again really took two of us. I'm 65 years old and had no trouble lifting the unit, dismantling it and replacing the bearings and seal. Reinstallation was even easier. I also found a broken shock absorber and replaced both of them and the belt even though the belt looked ok. Surprisingly few tools needed.

Take your washer all the way apart before ordering the bearings! I was convinced I had a bearing problem based on diagnosing it from the pulley side with the back off the machine. It was wishful thinking on my part! I bought the bearings and completed the dis-assembly of the machine. Then I found the truth... The spider support was totally corroded and broken in several places, and that is what caused the "box of rocks" sound during my spin cycle. I should be able to repair the machine, which is only 13 years old has only done about 1300 loads of laundry. The bearing kit is a great way to avoid Frigidaire's evil $250 rear drum plus bearings being sold as a single part scheme. But the stainless steel basket with the cheap pot metal aluminum spider support is something nobody has found a way around. It should be an $80 part like it is for several other brands. Instead you have to buy them together as a single part for $350. Frigidaire is environmentally irresponsible! I'm going to go buy a new washer, made by a manufacturer that sells the spider support separately.

Good comments. There is a method for checking if it is the spider by lifting the drum from the front and turning it about an 1/8 of a turn and lifting again. This isn't fool proof as the bearings can be (and usually are) shot and can be bad enough that they will allow some lift also. Either way, the bearings and seal need to be replaced and many of the models can get just the spider now. Frustrating that they use such crap quality components however.

  • @Hometask

We do not sell the spider. We only supply to bearing and seal kit. The spider is only made and sold by the manufacturer. Sometimes you can get it for free under warrantee. If you have to buy it "most" of the spiders are only sold with the metal basket.

I did this job yesterday 2/16/13 on my 11 year old "noisey" Frigidaire GLTR1670ASO front loader. Because my machine is 11 years old & gets plenty of use I dicided to take the bearing/seal replacement to the next level. I also replaced the 2 upper springs which were streched out, the 2 lower shocks,I got a new belt & I got a new seal thats inbetween the two halves of the outer tube. I purchased these parts from Appliance Parts Pros. They will not sell you just the bearings. Hope this helps you.

These 2X4's can now be used as a sled. I slid the heavy tub assembly down the 2X4's onto a dolly and brought the dolly into the garage where there's no chance of cracking the tile floor in the house from banging the bearings out. As stated below I found the noise was from a failed bearing ( the smaller one) It failed not because of water infultration due to a bad seal, the seals integrity was still good, it failed because it's the smaller of the 2 bearings & the washer is 11 years old.

Jerrod, Thank you for your reply and insight. Good news in that the water pump has worked the last few loads. The draining problem was intermittent, so hopefully it was just a connection. As for the shaking, I replaced the bearings and the spider about a year ago. I could have missed a crack, I didn't examine it too close it seemed to be in good shape - and only a year or so old - when I replaced the bearings a couple of weeks ago. So I'm hoping it is the shocks. I guess we'll see, the new ones should be here in a week or so. FYI, I had to use a lot of effort to seat the tub shaft in the new bearings. I guess I should have prepped the shaft in some way. I had to beat it out of the old bearings and noticed a ring of rust on the shaft where it contacted the 'inside' bearing. I really hope I didn't take years off the new bearings during the install process.

  • @Hometask

Hazel Lee - I am not sure why but it will not let me respond to your question below. There is like one of several issues happening. It could be a loose wire somewhere that is not allowing the pump to come on at a certain point. It could also be a mechanical issue with the pump. Both of these are much less likely than it being an issue with the controls. Either the control / timer board or the main board. Both of those are easy to replace and are not all that expensive. These machines also have lots of problems with the door switch so you may mess with that a bit for example try pushing in on the door when it won't drain and see if it will start draining. You can also pull the front cover off while it is running and when it does not drain, take a meter and see what is happening at the pump voltage wise. Is it being prompted to drain or not? Hope this helps. Jerrod

If everything we purchased lasted 100 years, well you get the picture. The trick is to keep'em running for as long as you can. Hope it works out for ya.

There not kidding when discribing the weight of the tub assembly that has to be removed from the washer housing. ITS HEAVY and trying to remove the stone counterweights while the tub assembly is still in the washer is near impossible, because I had no help I got 2 8' 2X4's. Spacing the 2X4's about 15" apart I used 2 seperate 20" long 2X4's fastening the shorter 2x4's under the 8 footers about 2' from each end using 21/2" dry wall screws. Drill preholes first so you don't crack the 2X4's.

Well, true. The economy certainly does factor in, but when you think about it, most people aren't going to spend the multiple hours it will take them (one guy posted it took him 8 hours, and he was a bloody mess) to fix it. I will sometimes offer them a reconditioned unit, at a reduced price, if I have one in stock. Most of the big guys (Home Depot, HH Gregg, etc.) offer different payment options to coincide with the still struggling economy to offset the higher cost of the front-loaders.

Jerrod, I'll check the voltage, but the fact that sometimes it works and sometimes not makes me think your suggestion of a connection or a bad control component is more likely. The drain problem was not an issue before the bearing job, so hopefully its just a connection problem. When I look at it, I'll try some contact cleaner and dielectric grease on all connections I took apart and hope for the best, but the fact that it drains during the wash cycle and seemingly all but the last rinse cycle (the water standing in the tub at wash end is very clean) does not give me a good feeling, and makes me think that the timer is more suspect, but I wasn't close to that in the bearing repair. I did remove the control board. Maybe dirt got on the it when the machine was taken apart..maybe clean that board? What do you think / recommend? (FYI, the washer is a Kenmore model 41744142400. The best deals found on its Motor Control Board is $170 and the Circuit Board & Timer is $278 - pretty expensive.)

My Frigidaire front load starting making a load banging noise on spin cycle. It sounds like the inner drum is off balance and banging into the side of the tub. Could this be broken spider or bearing or both?

  • @Hometask

    @Hometask

    9 жыл бұрын

It is likely either the front bearing coming apart or the spider breaking. If it is the bearing then it would have had to be making noise for at least a couple of weeks if not more. Take it apart and check it out. You can't run it anymore the way it is so the sooner you know the better. You can have it out and taken apart in a couple of hours. From there, you know what you need. If the spider is broken then some of them are available and some you have to buy the entire inner drum. Sometimes, if it is less than 10 years old, the manufacturer will send a replacement for free. If it is the bearings then we can get a repair kit out to you.

Hazel - You must be blocking you comments from replys as I cannot reply to your comment directly. I agree about the circuitry but I don't know if the trigger wire to cause the pump to drain is the same as the wash cycle. It could be a simple water level sensor is bad that is only used for the final drain cycle or something like that. It could be one of the controlers also.

HomeTask Blocking youtube comments, I looked for settings and found no clue, but our daughter took over the subscription. It would be unlike her to block feedback though, she enjoys it too much. Maybe blocked by accident, I'll ask her. As to the washer, I spent some time this PM observing action during rinse and spin cycles. The pump worked, but the tub only spun slow. The tub started a pretty good shake as the motor was acceleration, and the spin would kick off. After 8 or so attempts with the same result, the cycle ended and the clothes were still very, very, very wet. I test spun again under different wash cycles (dedicates, regular, permapress) and same thing - so I think that eliminates the control/timer. Do you agree? Next I took half the clothes out, tried again, and it spun down perfectly. Is there a 'shake sensor' that shuts down the motor? Last week, when replacing the bearings, I noticed the shock absorbers were basically shot. They may have degraded with removed and all. I didn't think much of it and put machine together anyway. But now I'm wondering if I replace the shocks, might the spin issue be mitigated? (It doesn't explain the standing water in the bottom of the tub after #1 daughter did laundry. That is still a mystery.)

Hazel Lee (: Hazel- The good news is that I can respond to your comment now. The bad news is that I really don't have any idea what could be causing this. I would agree that your moving from one cycle to the other to test the timer may be an effective way of ruling it out as the problem but it may not. I don't know how they function. If it was purely circutry then I may agree but they are part mechanical and there could be something literally broken and preventing the action that is needed to cause the drain. For the shaking, it sounds like a broken spider to me. You can replace the bearings and miss a crack in the spider on one of the arms because the other two arms hold it in place. It has happened before. But, that still does not explain why it would stop draining. I do not believe the shocks would have any impact on controling the pump. The pump won't even feel the shaking because of the rubber boot connecting it to the tub. The pump will pump if it is told to. Something is stopping it and I doubt it is the pump itself. If you really want to get fancy, you could figure out what kicks the pump on. I assume it would be a positive switch wire coming from the controller since this is an a/c system. You could replicate that power from somewhere else if it does indeed cut out or just not come on when it is suppose to and see if the pump does its job. You can get to all this from just inside the front cover so that makes it fairly easy. But, if you can test the circuit and something isn't telling the pump to turn in then you have to work your way back up the chain to find out what is breaking down in the system.

HomeTask Great video.Unfortunately I can't post my comment so I'm just adding it here as a reply.I do have a question, would oil leaking ,one time water leaking and extremely loud noise while spinning (sounds like a plane taking off) has only to do with the bearings?I was told that I have to spend at least 400$ just to change the bearings,so I plan on doing that myself. The repair man did not wanna get involved repairing my stacked frigidaire washer/dryer,saying that it's just not worth it.Well,my machine worked great for 10 years and can't afford to buy a new one, especially when I hear that the new ones can't even last 3 years.Thank you.

Octavian Dumitrascu Sorry you could not post. It is open for comments so I am not sure why. Your problem is why this video exists and we also have a chat group with hundreds of people that have made the repair. I sell repair kits for this very purpose also. You can access the group and purchase a kit for your machine here: www.yellowvanhandyman.com/washerrepair.aspx

Great video. I disassembled the washer no problem. Got the bearings and seal out no problem. I ordered the parts from your website listed and paid for expedited shipping. Paid $90. You sent the wrong part twice. I asked for a call back and no response. My fear is that I am out $90. Why wont you respond to me?
