I found your videos really insightful, specially because of the dialectic focus in different approaches. I would love to see one lecture about the psychoanalytic cure across different authors.

These feeling of jealousy, sexual curiosity, and love, all become acted out throughout adult life, beginning when sexuality is discovered. But by then, all these feelings are safely repressed into the id, the unconscious mind. Intellectually confirming these feeling is not resolution.

Thanks for this Dr Carveth. Would you be willing to do a series on introduction to Freudian theory? Thank you

I think if you go down to the bottom of the list of videos the earliest ones provide something of that introduction, but perhaps I can do one comprehensive video to cover that material better.

I highly appreciate your work! It’s tremendously helpful! I have a question. Is monogamy the price we are willing to pay to keep our Oedipus paralysis in check and remain the apple of mom’s eye? We have rendered sexuality something special, as some sort of proof of our determination, but I guess it’s arbitrary; it could be anything else.

There is a lot of truth in that, but to leave it at that seems too utilitarian. I accept the restrictions of monogamy because I want my partner to accept those restrictions and not cheat on me. So I don’t cheat on her. But there’s more to it than that. I want a whole object relation. There’s something sacred about the marital bond. I want to respect myself. So it’s not just a trade-off. It’s an ideal worth striving for.

@@doncarveth Thanks, Don, for pointing out the deeper meaning of monogamy! Monogamy, in this sense, is like faith in a monotheistic God; it’s a commitment to enduring ambivalence as a whole object relation, and this is expressed in the marriage vows ‘in good times and in bad, until death do us part.’ It’s a mature focus.

Wonderful. I’ve repeatedly studied Freud and came away feeling fragmented from my own learning of his works and you clarify so well for me. Thank you.
