You can always do what I call a dry run to make sure your tool path and the piece are good before doing the actual cutting...I ran across your video while looking for some frett polishing info and really enjoyed what you are doing and very impressed for just beginning to program and operate a CNCMACH...I'm a cnc programmer machinist by trade for over 20 years and enjoy playing guitar....I've only machined metal for the oilfield and refineries in Louisiana and enjoyed watching your journey into cnc machining.....Your wood work is top notch...

Enjoying the series so far Dave, thanks for videoing and sharing your journey for all to see. A little tip for you, if you want to go that way of course! It's one I can't take credit for but I learnt it from Bob Benedetto. When you machine the outline of the fret board, machine it full depth as you've done but include the nut width to your length and then machine a step where the nut goes, but only down to your veneer layers. Then when you glue it on and have your nut sitting in its slot, the veneer line appears to run continuously from the fret board, under the nut and then run into the head stock.

love that fret slotting rig. I bet it's even faster then the CNC.

Yeah I agree about the speed but lining it back up on the cnc was a bit tricky

Great video Dave. I guess I'm gonna have to break down and get myself a CNC eventually! I need a big band saw first! I love your videos and your guitars are just wonderful man. ✌️

Once u figure out how to cut the fret slots on your cnc, u can blind cut them so when u install the frets there is no filling involved on the edges of the fred board where the slots normally protrude.

Yeah that will be good. I have tried a few times, the bits are so small (.023”) that I keep breaking them. I need to figure out the feeds and speeds to get it right.

Very interesting content as always Dave! One thing that you could consider for a future build is to use your CNC to make a compound radius (10" to 14") making it easy for chords in the lower area and flatter up high for lead lines.

Yes that is my hope. Once I get this software learned I need to get a 3-D modeling software to be able to do the really cool stuff!

I have grown my little guitar thing to the point of being able to justify a garage CNC. There are so many options. Are you still digging your Shark 510? Has it been accurate and rigid enough for all your needs? Thanks for the videos!

Yes the hd 510 has been great for a hobby guy like me. If you can afford it and have the space you may want to consider the 520 for it’s extra length. Also make sure to get the water cooled spindle it’s worth it
