I’m 68 yrs old, and one thing i have learned is be careful being certain about things. However, in this case I can speak with 100% certainty that I would not work on anything out in the cold and snow and sub zero temps. If i couldn’t get it moved to the shop then it’s going to sit right where it is until spring! You are a way better man than me for doing that. Mad respect kid!! Also… enjoy your youth because all too soon it will be gone and you will be THAT guy that won’t work out in the cold!!

all the starters of the world love it when he posts a bike video and has to do 1000 attempts at kick starting.......actually i think the last kick start video i watched even ended up with the kick start lever giving up and suiciding itself in a field

The woodruff key doesn't hold the flywheel to the crank, the woodruff key is only used to locate the flywheel to it's correct position the friction between the two tapers does all the holding If the contact of the tapers on both the flywheel and the crankshaft aren't perfectly matched and seated together you will find it will probably continue to shear keys this alos happens a lot if the tapers are scored and burred from previous shears , the cure is to lap in the flywheel to crank tapers just the same as you would grind a Valve in. I use grinding compounds to obtain a good surface on both tapers then you must make sure all residue is cleaned off before fitting a new key and tighten to the specified torque, I've seen a lot of issues with folk fitting too tall a key which prevents the tapers holding and then another key shears off easily

I wondered what causes a woodruff key to shear other than inertia due to the sudden stopping of the flywheel as happens in a running lawnmower. You explanation explained the why very, very well.

lack of a good tight matched fit and the only thing left to stop all that momentum is the woodruff key, even a slight backfire or stutter can easily shear the key at that point I learned a long time ago that every day is a schoolday and we all need to keep learning 🙂@@danburch9989

I have had to file the top of one down before. If you don’t get the part at a dealer you never know what you are getting unless you have the old key in hand for comparison.

You need to lap that flywheel back into the crank snout like you would lapping valves, and get the correct OEM woodruff key, not a HF knock off. After assembling to torque spec, you could take a brass drift and tap the flywheel in the area around the flywheel nut, to see if it will seat more, then check tight to the torque spec again.

Joe, I have a suggestion for you. When you have a machine that won’t start as in this one build a winch mount on your trailer, winch it up on the trailer and back it in front of the garage. Unload it and you wont have to work in the cold…… Thanks for all of your great content… Good Luck.

45:34 I have respect...I know working on things in cold weather. Confused though. You have multiple pieces of equipment.....why didn't you tow it to your shop? One piece of advice. Woodruff keys are only there for backup to a seated flywheel to crank. Remove key and lap the flywheel as you would valves to seat surfaces. Mate two surfaces....then clean and replace key and assemble.. Also always remember....if you wanted bigger fish use bigger baited hooks...😂 keep creating.

That's what I wondered, seems like a 4x4 Quad could of towed it up the driveway. I remember as a Teenager having to replace the Transmission in my 1968 Olds Delmont 88 in my Parents Driveway in the Middle of Winter with Snow Banks as High as the Car on either side!....Good Times! 🥶🥶

The Woodruff key locates the flywheel on the crank, the taper fit is what holds it in place.

Nothing is colder than cold coolant running down the sleeve of your jacket up into your armpit when working from below. I admire your willingness to work in that weather! Used to 'ride' snowmobiles back in the 70's - when the phrase ride for an hour fix for week was invented.

My first sled was a 1972 Lynx, then a few years after that a couple of 440 Cheetahs. I spent a lot of time in the garage working on these. Now it’s just gas , oil and grease it occasionally. I do work on my Ranger a lot but it’s from trail conditions.

I would just leave it till the thaw... but then again, I live in Florida and after being born and living for 57 years in Oregon, I don't do cold weather anymore

If that happens again you should try valve lapping compound on the crank snout to flywheel get a good tight fit if you dont know what im talking about look it up 👍

My son has the same model, and the comp module, went bad. Replaced it, and runs great, now.

I’ve never owned a Polaris and never will, their motors and drivelines are always problematic at best and I just can’t stand their belt drive systems. I have so many die hard Polaris friends that won’t buy any other brand yet still bitch about and constantly have to spend money on their Polaris’s. I’ve got a 1987 Yamaha moto 4 and a 2001 Suzuki quad runner 500 and they just start and run and perform every time. Great vid, always enjoy your troubleshooting 👍

When talking about utvs Polaris is the way to go. But in general ide rather own a Polaris than a canam everyday of the week. If you know machines and what can mechanically fail Polaris are great machines. In fact they run so long the frame and bushings will rot and fall apart before the motors blow

As stated before the key only locates the flywheel, the taper is what’s important, but also make sure that is the correct nut for the flywheel, if there is supposed to be a flange or washer on the nut it may not be holding the flywheel tight enough and that can cause it to slip on the taper

I can't wait to see you work on a Kawasaki TERYX 4. I have a 2013 and a 2021. They don't seem to break if you take good care of them. I did blow a rear shock on the 2013 so I upgraded the Fox 2s on the 2021 to Elka Hester Edition Stage 1 shocks and passed the Fox 2 shocks to the 2013. The Elka's were less expensive for a full set then trying to replace the rear OEM shocks.

Love what you do man, and your channel. My buddy is big into side x sides and these woods buggies what ever their called. He sold his Polaris cause it broke down to many times on him. He bought a can am and never had a problem since. I guess if you were gonna keep that buggy Joe you'll always have content man....lol. Love your channel man keep it goin!

A small whiff of easy start does help in extreme cold condition to avoid extended cranking 👍. Workes for me everytime 😉. Well done on fixing the fault though 😀.

Great video, as always a learning experience. Admire the cold and snow yard repair. Live in Minnesota not having a garage and -10°F things gave out (starter, battery, water pump, valve gaskets). You don't have a power auger? Special Guest Star 2Vinney. "that's a tiny one though." 😏😏

Heroic effort in the snow . Dragging the compressor out was over and above the call of duty . Any idea why the woodruff key sheared ?

Hit the polished portion of the crank with some valve grinding compound before installing the flywheel.

I've always used and impact and drove the flywheel on. Then backed the nut off and hit it again 2 or 3 more times to seat the flywheel. I've had those keys break before but never since I started doing it this way. A shop owner taught me that.

First thing when weather is like this, is put it in neutral and tow it into the garage to work on it. Something isn't right with mating surface of flywheel to crankshaft, and/or bolt was not torqued correctly.

Good job, 👍👏👍 but a minor observation, you forgot to fit a tow ball on the back. 🤷‍♂️ 👍👏👍

Initially, I thought that myself, but after seeing the backside of the flywheel, with the broken piece in, I think the previous one he had, was too tall. Possibly why it broke. I think the more shallow one, that's in it now, will be a better fit for it

Man, that was a good call I thought for sure it was gonna be ice in the carburetor. Plugging up the pilot.

They're just aftermarket adaptable reducer flared end muffler and tip fittings fittings into those inserts. At the end of them. For the exhaust pipe tubes inserts to fit inside and to the end of pipe tubing. where the factory muffler's attached onto it with clamps.,or snap buckles and clevis locking snap clips.

I’m only about five minutes into the video and I haven’t watch the rest. I making this comment before watching the rest. I had the same issue with my quad. It was actually the battery believe it or not it would crank over so I never would’ve thought that the battery didn’t have enough juice, but it was off by an amp in a few volts. I was getting spark, but not a hard enough spark. There was a bad cell in my battery I put a brand new factory spec battery starts perfect. Every time now prior to that I would always have to put a set of jumper cables on it to give it that extra voltage it needed.

You worked hard on this one...but the SEATS!

My only concern would be the quality of harbor freight keys. If it was me, i would have gotten an oem key for peace of mind. You could check the contact area of the taper by using some blueing pase to see the fitment of the two tapers.

What is the pack sack with the wires for when you were ice fishing?

All the late model Polaris need to have the fuel pump cycled up to 7-9 times and then engine cranked in cold weather. The system does not hold pressure when fuel pump stops. I would use non alcohol fuel in winter. There is a coolant bleed screw on T-stat housing. Open when filling. Then Crack open when running.

Just check the keys clearances in the shaft and flywheel, if there loose it will sheer again. I would use the factory's keys instead of the Chinese Harbor Freight ones. Always put in factory parts in.

That side by side will help you out at the property you have, also building your house.👌

Is the key way shearing common on atvs? I came across it a lot with push mowers and attributed it to hitting something with the blade. Don’t work on atvs/utvs much and am just curious if this is a common issue.

Do you ever sell any of the things you fix? I’m in Wisconsin and looking for a new plowing/fun machine.

A 2015 and it needed a complete rebuild? I have a 2008 700XP Ranger that has never been left out at night, well taken care of, and still runs great and is in very nice condition.

Quick question Yamaha rhino 660: Starts up fine idol great and even runs good, but if you push the throttle down more than halfway, it just kind of chokes out and doesn’t want to rev up. I thought it was bad gas because I put a little bit of two-stroke gas in it But I cleaned that out and put fresh gas in there and it is still doing that. Could the main jet be clogged? Because the pilot jet seems to be letting it idle and run fine up to a certain point? I guess it could also be some water in the bottom of the carburetor bowl? Just thought I would ask if you get a minute to reply. Thanks!

One thing I learned long ago in my early days of wrenching, if it don't start don't keep cranking, its one of two things more than likely, no spark or no fuel, quick way to know is just spray some starting fluid, or WD40 into the intake then crank, if it fires you know its a fuel delivery issue, if it does not fire then its a spark issue, then you can go after the cause, just letting it crank and crank does nothing but burn up your starter and drain your battery then when you figure out the problem your battery is to weak to start it or starter is shot. Alos don't go diving into ripping things apart untill you have checked all the obvious easy to get to things first.

It runs pretty good now.
