Fresh Step Crystals Litter Review & Discussion of Silica Gel (Crystal) Litters

In depth review of Fresh Step Premium Crystals cat litter. Also a discussion and comparison of other "crystal" litters that are made of Silica Gel. Silica Gel is not a gel at all but is essentially man made porous sand. Crystalline silica gel is extremely dangerous to inhale, but the silica gel in cat litters is amorphous form and not crystal form (despite the name of the litter). Amorphous silica gel still poses a hazard for inhalation though. Consumption and inhalation were discussed as hazards on the phone with an professional on Msds. Small amounts are usually no worry, but large amounts and prolonged exposure are.
Silica Gel is excellent at odor control and is a great desiccant (meaning it absorbs moisture). It will shrivel the cats poop to what I call mummified poop. HOWEVER, if there is urine that seeps to the bottom and is not soaked up because you(r):
1. Didn't have enough litter in your box
2. Didn't clean and sift/stir the litter enough
3. Litter is too old, used, and saturated
Then that urine (once exposed) will smell like a feral cat marked its territory with no burying or covering.
Concerning ALL types of Non-Clumping Litters (Crystal/ silica gel, diatomaceous earth, etc.) I find myself cautiously worrying about the build-up of urine over a 30 day period.

I've had fantastic experiences with Vibrant Life Mini Crystals so far. My little kitty seems to enjoy burying his waste in it much more than with clay. If it lasts nearly a month then I'd say it's a high quality bang for buck product.

One thing I can say about pretty litter is I would have never known my male kitten had crystals in his urine from too much protein and my female kitten had a urinary tract infection . It turned colors and I took them to the vet and confirmed they had issues. That's a genius littler. I don't like that they force you to auto-ship. We use a bin like that for a litter box. My kittens love it❤️ it's huge and roomy.

Hello! I’m a new kitten owner (my first cat ever) and I happened to purchase the fresh step crystals about 3 weeks ago :) I’ve never dealt with any litter before and I had a hard time finding good videos about this particular litter, so thank you very much for all this info! Can I ask what exactly you mean when you say to “clean it” twice a day though? Like do we just sift through it with a litter scoop? Thank you!! :)

Congrats on your new fur baby of love 😻. Yes, just Sift it with a scoop exactly. Once or twice a day pending litter box size and number of cats. I've seen many places recommend actually deep cleaning with mild soap and water every month. I've always thought that an entire litter box deep clean every month was excessive... But I'm also a guy that gives my cats bigger litter boxes to roam in than the norm because I insist that all boxes are too small. 😅 Eventually you'll find a process and products that work best for your cat and yourself. Happy to help and len my experience, thoughts, and opinion. 👍

I actually got the big litter bags that go on the box before you add the litter to make cleanup easier, but my kitten likes scratching plastic bags so it didn’t really work lol :,) do you think this litter can actually go a whole 30 days without needing to be completely changed out? I think I should be adding more or just changing it completely at this point, but it has been about three weeks!

Inhalation and consumption seem to be the main concerns for silica gel whether it's warranted or not. However, the scent that is added might be more of a potential skin irritant? Just guessing here... But fragrances tend to be the things that people have trouble with in soaps. A scent free version of silica gel might be best. I think the Dr. Elsie's cat litter might be better between the two in this regard? ... Sorry for the late response. Hope you found or find something that works for you and you kitty

Based on the memory of the phone call I had about safety, I'd say no. Silica gel ingestion hazard is only dehydration in this case. Dehydration also would not be a problem unless a lot of it is consumed. Prolonged Inhalation of considerable amounts of dust is another unlikely case of worry. Not likely anyone will be breathing or eating lots of this stuff. But if you feel there's been a change in your or your cat's comfort, stop using it and try something else. There is no color change indicator chemical added to this silica gel. Some desiccant packets for home or commercial use have a chemical added to help you know when to change or recharge your packets. Many packets can be charged in a microwave (if you have a need to store something and keep moisture away...sorry, a bit off topic here) Whatever is added to the crystals to give it it's blue color is not considered harmful and therefore the company is not required to disclose what it is. Finally, silica gel can potentially absorb nearby chemicals that it comes in contact with. This is another reason that silica gel in all forms will come with a "do not eat" warning. Hope this helps. Im in no way an expert. Again, this is just my memory of a phone call and what I researched. If necessary, you may want to speak with a professional on the matter of the products safety and material safety and get a second opinion.

  • @Byromie

It is about 21" X 16" with tall sides. I also prefer to keep the litter rather deep. Storage bins make the best "litter boxes." Vast majority of litter boxes are too small. I grew up with cats that were mostly outdoors. An average house cat, if allowed unrestricted space to do its business 💩, will scratch an area of about 20" in diameter. Cats dig fairly deep too. The cat industry needs to think about cats first and owners second. No litter box should be less than 20" on the long side. I have a second box that I've been experimenting with... It's 18 x 32 inches! 🙀😻🙀. I don't recommend a box this big though. Excessively long😹 and difficult and heavy to manage.

There's some people on KZread that whenever the crystals are oversaturated they clean it with one part bleach two parts water and soak it and all kinds of stuff and they're able to reuse the crystals.

  • @Byromie

Wow. I've read that silica gel in general can be reused. I read somewhere that it can be heated to renew it. Seems like too much effort to do any of these things for my taste and time. I would think the crystals would get more and more broken down and dusty too. But if others save money, grace, and environment great.

But there's this lady somewhere you'll easily find her she has two sets of cat litters cuz she has so many cats and what she does periodically is she cleans it and everything on her back porch she has plenty of time for it she's probably on SSI. To her it's a lot easier to wash them compared to throwing it away, hop in the car go get some more litter, come back home, and clean the litter box again. She said for the past two years she's done this technique and the litter that she was processing at the moment on her back porch she had for about 6 months. I don't know if she recently replaced it or how often. She said that for six months she was cleaning the previous litter in general. So I'm thinking possibly every 6 months you're replacing it completely which doesn't quite add up money-wise to me, cuz you're buying the expensive Crystal litter and you're cleaning it for six months and then it probably breaks down by then and then you have to replace it again. If somebody chose the the horse pellet bedding and spend for a 40-lb bag. If you have one cat, 6mos, maybe more than one 3mos use. So I plan on doing the crystal cat litter first to see how long it takes how much money it's going to cost me and make my own cat litter system. Not as good as yours because I don't have the tools. But I've been looking and they have different types of sifting cat litter boxes so I'm considering getting to sifting cat litter boxes that are $13.50 each that way I can use one system for clean and one system for my cat. And use the same brand giant cat litter box. The purpose I'm hoping for, especially when I get to the horse bedding pellets situation l, is that I can use a disposable or reusable training pad underneath it so when it's dripping urine (which I think is why it's breaking down the crystals sooner) Then it can catch down there and I can accumulate with training pads longer. I'm even considering investing into training pads that are the right size or reuseable ones that way I don't have to keep going through training pads even though you can get them Dirt Cheap or you could even use to cat training pads. The cat ones can go thoigh two liters of water before you reach disaster and have to replace it. I'm just throwing things out there you have a great little Channel I don't even post anything because I'm too shy about it I guess but yeah hopefully you can think of something that's reusable or something that can be done that's cost-effective and demonstrate that to the audience. I've even seen this one lady who she uses BB's for cat litter and she does clean them of course so maybe that's a permanent solution if they don't break down because BB's tend to be biodegradable.

@@ericagibbons7697 thanks for commenting and sharing. My cats absolutely hated pellets. Don't blame them... I wouldn't want to dig and sit on chunky litter either. At least, that's how I see it 😹. Good luck to ya. I'll keep an open mind, but I'm sticking with and looking for litters that resemble dirt more. Something closer to the natural texture a cat would use. The litter genie system uses washable pellet things and hooks up to a water source. It's automatic and electric. Never used it though.

Well anything could be more tolerable if you have a sifting system where you have a sifting cat litter box with another box but then that means spending more money on a box system... I've actually done a little more research. But it's complicated, so I'll stay hushed for now. Lol

Thanks much 😺. Arizona has everything from A to Z. Good question, on what litter I'd use most if price was of no concern. It's insane how many litters there are. I'm trying to move away from clay litter, but I'm having trouble finding something I like significantly more than Dr Elsey's clumping clay litter (blue bag). I'm behind on posting a few more litter reviews. 3 litters that I have not posted a real-life-cat-use review for yet. I'm working on one for Tofu Kitty Club. It's insanely expensive, but best clumping organic/plant-based litter I've used yet. Clumps stick REALLY BAD to the bottom of the box. But after a month of use the clumps started sticking much less because there was a buildup of litter particles in the bottom from the litter being used all that time. If tofu kitty club was made into small round pieces that could be sifted with my litter box, it would be better and it would absorb better. These are it's only drawbacks I noticed. Be on lookout for final videod on tofu kitty club, litter maid corn cob,and world's best. Here's some criteria and what I've learned and what I'm looking for so far. (Not in any particular order) 1. TRACKING - coarse litter with larger pieces tracks least (but for me, not too big like wood pellets or Skoon). Fine litter tracks like crazy. 2. DUST - the size and weight of dust is what matters. Light weight, airborne dust is not cool. Heavy dust or particles is acceptable and less likely to be inhaled. 3. FRAGRANCE FREE - if there's a fragrance, I feel like there's something to hide. Fragrance wouldn't be necessary if the litter main ingredient did it's job. Also most fragrances are not natural and become annoyingly unpleasant. 4. TEXTURE - round and not too big. These are the only textures that work in my litter box invention. Litter needs to work in a gravity sifting box. Plus it's nicer for digging for the cats 5. PRICE PER VOLUME/ABSORBANCY/USE - I've tried to reiterate this in all my videos. Price per weight is a terrible way to judge litter. Price per volume is more accurate. Even better is price per absorbance or use.

My picks so far: Dr Elseys - best all around clay liter. Heavy weight. Fresh Step Crystals - great intro to Silica Gel litter. texture is similar to traditional litter. But I have reservations about urine not being thrown out till a month later regardless of it smelling or not. World's Best corn (red bag) - good intro to bio corn litter. Smells like old corn feed (I personally don't like the smell), average performance in all criteria, doesn't excel in any 1 area Tofu Kitty club - Great bio plant litter with solid clumps. Clumps stick badly to box untill lengthy use and dust liner builds at bottom of box. Can't use in a sifting box and Is insanely expensive!

Same as the Clorox company and I think under P&G company. P&G is huge company. I prefer clumping so I can remove the pee entirely each day instead of it accumulating in the crystals and potentially wafting in the air each time I stir it. I figure if you have to stir it you might as well skoop it. So clumping it is for me. ... And has is pretty common I'm responding late to some comments. KZread doesn't like to notify me 😅
