Fresh Air Traverse - Mt. Whitney's East Face
Спорт
Helmet-cam footage crossing the infamous Fresh Air Traverse on Mount Whitney's East Face. This classic high-Alpine route offers moderate climbing on excellent rock...plus heart-stopping exposure. In the California Sierra.

Thanks for the memories. Did this climb in the 90's. Seems like a lifetime ago. Neither my partner nor I had a camera with us (unbelievable!) Guess we just thought we'd be doing this stuff forever. Arthritis forced me to give up rock climbing and tele skiing years ago, but I still backpack, snowshoe and do some light mountaineering. Advice to young climbers: Take lots of pics and get partners' last names, cell #s and email addresses! You won't remember them as well as you think you will.
That's a whole lot of NOPE right there. Mad respect Sir.
You guys did a great job on this video. From the music, to the editing, filming and video footage...to the final product. Thanks for posting this gem.

Thanks Steve -- this is definitely one of my older videos, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. Check out the new stuff! :)
Years ago when Tuolumne 11s were the norm I free soloed it with a friend and until watching this had remembered it as "the quickest way up Whitney and back at the car by dark". But now.... LOL! "Wow, I forgot how exposed it is" Yes, the holds are all pretty much big, positive and bomber, but the exposure is Alpine exposure, meaning lots of route finding among big blocky moves and it's easy when leading to get suckered into moving too fast and winding up off-route. Still looks like fun tho.
great video.... thanks for packing that cam where every oz. counts!
It's a great climb, thanks for the video brings back a few memories
That exposure around 3 minute mark. Those little blocks look like they can peel right off the face… 😭
Nice video. Kurt was our lead guide on Mount Rainier several years ago. I also ran into him on Mount Hood while he was guiding a client. Great guy.
Great job on the vid. That looks like a beautiful climb.
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Nice job, I felt like I was right there.
Watching this video made my hands sweat! Thank God for excellent hand foot and hand holds.
Steve, glad I was able to take you back for a few minutes there! You might enjoy my site also -- link is on my channel page.
You're a better skier than you are a climber, Andy. :) Thanks for the vid though. Brings me back like many others that found this one.
highcuu, we were climbing on two separate ropes, with the leader belaying both of us simultaneously. Both ropes were clipped into the same gear, so the 2nd just unclipped and kept going, while I followed and cleaned all the gear.
Yes, this is the classic step that Norman Clyde and company pioneered. :)
I think this was real time--including waiting for the climber ahead of me.
I looked straight down from the top and It kinda freaked me out. But I see this video and it makes me sick. Congrats to anyone with the gut to do this..
@canofcrass Cool Thanks!
fuck that. I love to adventure and suffer with the best of them but not down with terminal exposure
And yeah, there a few pitons that stay put.
Is there a good time to climb the east face? I've never done it before I really want to try this summer.
What camera setup did you use here? Very good quality!
Vholdr ContourHD. Quirky camera, but resolution is very nice.
Oh, I just noticed the first one was a pin.
YOur film is about 8 minutes, how long did it take you to climb the fresh air section?
I could never do this.
Was this the classic line for the fresh air traverse? I followed this pitch in 1986 but your Route looks much more difficult
I didn't see the second ever remove any pro. Every time I saw him unclip a piece, it looked like he just racked the sling and kept climbing. Am I just missing it every time?

highcuu the east face has a ton of traverses so the second person has to rack all the gear. If the the first person racked the gear, the second wouldn't be protected in the traverse sections if that makes sense.

The first piece looked like an old fixed piton.
Looks like they’re simul climbing yeah?

we were setting protection on most of the pitches on this route, including the FA traverse
I'd rather watch you ski. This video just freaks me out.
That trail looks intense - the views look amazing though! :-) just to let you know that we have all the latest hiking equipment product videos available to watch on our channel - so if you get a chance please check it out! Thanks!
