    Most contractors aren’t true professionals like you, they’re the fly by nighters and don’t have the equipment to remove the dirt, that’s why they put it back in, because it will work for like a day and they get paid and then change their phone numbers and are never to be heard from again. Thanks for the educational content!

    Are you not listening. First off who cares about the grass if you have huge puddles. Next by placing the dirt back in (to have pretty grass accordingly to you) you jeopardize because the dirt will clog the French drain. That’s due to the clay and small rocks in the dirt. Not to mention the roots from the crabgrass or other weeds now growing in the dirt. Thank me later my boy

    That is what the filter fabric is for. Come on people. There is dirt on the bottom and both sides. If you got rock all around the pipe and you have filter fabric all around that, if you got the fabric doubled over the top, it's not going to hurt putting dirt back in the ditch. If you think the fabric won't stop the dirt from coming through the fabric and rock, then it won't stop it on either side. Ithink you're full of crap. I've worked in construction for over 40 years and put in a lot of drainage pipe. Then we put the fabric in first, then the rock. Pull one side of the fabric over the ditch then lap the othe side over the first one.the dirt is never going through it. You have to put some dirt in for the grass to grow unless you want rock in your yard. This is the way we had to put it in according to the inspectors.

    @johnharrison2511

    Dirt "back in", is not "dirt around". Basic lack of comprehension is the main cause of drainage done badly. Pipe, surrounded by aggregate as an aeration/filter/ capacity for soaking up more water, wrapped in fabric, or whatever barrier, then backfill. Obviously the fabric/ filter goes in the ditch first, followed by a bed of aggregate, then the pipe, then more aggregate, surrounding the whole pipe nicely. Then the full wrap of membrane/barrier, to encase the whole thing. Then the backfill. Excess dirt can be good for raised beds etc. Sometimes the water drained away can also be utilised in another zone of your garden.

No gravel, waste of money and time. It works perfectly. The big thing is, zero callbacks and no water issues. We also always run the downspouts to our drain lines. If it's a lot of water, we double up the 4 in sock wrap. One on top the other.

    There's one other detail to protect the integrity of the perforated pipe. The contractor sock, which is a fine, elastic nylon mesh sleeve, allows water to pass through, but stops dust and debris, which washes off the sheer fabric, so there is no eventual clogging . Then the gravel goes in, just as the narrator said. The effect is as he said. That gravel helps displace so less water can fill the ditch, so soaking is even less possible, and so velocity is dulled so it can enter the holes in the tube. One of those at the edge of the yard, and one to protect the foundation, solved a puddle problem at our house, 20 years and going strong.

    The same issue stands true when you’re backfilling a home. You’re not supposed to backfill a basement using the dirt that was originally there. It’s supposed to be clear rock. Yet, almost all contractors will that code and just use dirt as backfill, which in my opinion is fraudulent, that’s why, if you were having a home built, you need to stop in every day and look at what the contractors are doing because they will build an inferior product to save a few dollars and make the homeowners suffer the consequences later. I’ve seen it in person.

    this is just a diversion system to help solve a soggy backyard A true French drain needs to be dug down around the footing of your homes foundation so that as the ground water level gets to that point....water will take the path of least resistance.....so it will fill up the perforated pvc pipe, holes facing down, and wrapped in landscape fabric with 3/4 clean stone surrounding the pit and covering the pipe about 6" all the way around....then waterproof the foundation exterior and backfill. The drain pipe should be run either to a low, draining area on YOUR property, or straight to the curb at the street and let it run to the twsp sewer system.

A contractor can try to persuade the homeowner to do it the right way..but they have to do what the homeowner wants. Their house..their money. You also have contractors doing the work without the homeowner watching them. The owner leaves for the day and comes back with the job done...not knowing that the contractor put dirt instead of rock. The owner got charged for rock but the contractor just pockets the money instead.

They can't get the slope needed to handle the water the right way so you just add rock so you have more holding capacity in the trench then if you just had soil on top. All you are doing is giving the surface water a place to go to slower drain away.

  • @EthanPDobbins
    @EthanPDobbinsАй бұрын

    Pipe should be in the bottom. It'll still work somewhat for a while like this because the rock has airspace for water to occupy but you want your pipe to be in the bottom of the hole with the stone on top. You want the water to flow down through the rock, into the pipe, then out the end of the pipe. If the pipe is on top of rock, the water has to fill in to reach the same level as the pipe in order to flow out. So you've got an underground puddle and the groundwater level cannot drop as deep. Leave enough room for 4-8 inches of topsoil over top of the pipe. You don't want all of the dirt to go back in of course but Any less than 4 inches can result in a strip of dead grass during dry periods, and doesn't provide much buffer between the installation and any future marker stakes, tires from equipment driving through the yard, digging for e-collar fences for dogs, ect.

The sand and silt will sit in his piping and roots will start to grow that pipe is not serviceable without damaging it. I’m probably half this guys age and do better drains than this. Corrugated drain pipe is the absolute the worst material to use for drains I understand in some cases it’s needed but only as a last resort.

Luckily, a guy was going street to street offering his services with the concrete auger at a reasonable $100. Took him like 10 minutes. That completed the drain and helped stop the 2 story house from sinking after increasingly more record rains. I applied this system to our apartment buildings and taught a friend how to save her 4plex. It’s amazing that apparently no builders install this critical system in new homes.
