The French are participating because of the 120th Anniversary of the Entente Cordiale between, the UK and France. The Republican Guard (Garde républicaine) is part of the French National Gendarmerie. It is responsible for special security duties in the Paris area and for providing guards of honour at official ceremonies of the French Republic. One can expect to see them wearing their typical ceremonial uninforms when performing the Change of the Guard. I personally think it's a great move. Not surprised of the large amount of antagonism reflected in many of the comments. Speaks for itself.

British army grenadier companies wore bearskins following the 1768 uniform regulations, though the 42nd Highlanders aka Black Watch wore them slightly earlier than that. Fusiliers also wore bearskins plus the 5th Foot (Northumberlands) often wore them totally unofficially, eventually officially when they became fusiliers in the late 19th century. (Note though that many of these ‘bearskins’ were actually goat!).

France was the 1st european superpower many times in History, during almost all the reign of the capetians which, let me remind you, lasted for 800 years, making it the longest reigning dynasty even to this day despite the 1789 Revolution. Just some examples : France started the crusades with the preach of Clermont in 1095. Alone at Bouvines, in 1214, Philippe Auguste defeated the coalition of flemish cities allied to the king of England John Lackland and the Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV, forcing upon the king of England the Magna Carta, which gave all the power to the parliament up until this day. The same country ended the Spanish Empire at Rocroi, with the prince of Condé under the reign of the Sun King and ended the Holy Roman Empire at Iéna in 1806, under Napoléon.

Correction: British grenadiers had been around for at least a century before the battle of Waterloo. Each regiment of the British army contained a company of grenadiers - the tallest and strongest men in the regiment whose original job was to throw grenades and evolved in the elite, assault troops of the regiment. The "regimental" grenadiers wore bearskin hats in the American Revolution at least 40 years before the battle of Waterloo. P.S. It was the 52nd foot (the Oxs and Bucks) that defeated the French guards at Waterloo. Another example of the slap-dash superficial research that characterizes today's media. Makes you wonder what else they didn't get right.

Good to see these two countries despite many years of conflict in the past they still have each other. Remember, the French imperial Guards considered to be the best during 18th century, but later on defeated by the Duke of Wellington with his Red Coat army together with the Great Prussian Army. Nevertheless British and French now considered brothers.

The battle of waterloo and the defeat of Napolean was not just a British victory. It was a coalition. With Prussian and Austrian troops. In fact Wellington was in retreat and only chose to hold his position at Waterloo because he had word that the Prussian Army, desoite just being defeated at Ligny, was not in bad shape, had reorganised and was on its way to Waterloo to link back up with Wellington. This is the Sun reporting tho so I do appreciate a bit of nuanced history is unlikely

I think this is a great touch. Ok yes, one thousand years of rivalry culminating at Waterloo, but even in between bouts of war there were periods of peace and friendship. The two countries fought so often because they shared similar strategic interests. The softening in relations started before the Entente, with British and French forces fighting together in Crimea against Russia (and the Ottomans?) If we two could recover our collective balls and imitate our ancestors (in some respects) we'd both be much better for it.

A wonderful spectacle, but the commentary is deeply flawed. The 1st Foot Guards, that under Peregrine Maitland, rose from reclining positions and fired on the Garde Imperiale, were mistakenly thought to have defeated the bearskin-hat wearing Grenadiers of the Old Guard. They beat the Chasseurs of the Middle Guard, that did not wear the grenadier bearskins. The Old Guard remained in reserve in the vicinity of Napoleon, and was killed piecemeal in a dogged retreat, defending every inch of their retreat, but to no avail, as the rest of the French Army simply dissolved in defeat and vanished. The 1st Foot Guards, under this mistaken impression, re-styled themselves the Grenadier Guards, thus becoming the first British Grenadier regiment 56 years after another Commonwealth unit had been formed into a Grenadier regiment (the distinction is that of an entire regiment being designated a Grenadier Regiment, while right from the beginning of the concept of grenadiers, there had been grenadier companies within Fusilier or other line infantry regiments). The grenadier company of the Grenadier Guards were the first to wear the bearskin hats, but soon, the entire regiment began wearing it, and were followed by the Coldstream Guards and the Scots Guards respectively; when the Irish Guards and the Welsh Guards were formed, they followed suit, and began wearing the bearskin hats. None of the Household Guards other than the 1st Foot Guards fought any unit of the Garde Imperiale, the 1st Foot Guards never fought the bearskin hat wearing grenadiers of the Old Guard, but it does make for a ripping good story.

What a beautiful thing! It sends a lovely message. This history between us and France is through Royalty, the people were not at war. We are Anglo Saxons ourselves and were once the migrants. I think it's one in four Brits who can trace their Ancestry directly back to the Huguenots who fled France due to religious persecution in the 1600's. Anything that celebrates our commonalities rather than our differences is a beautiful thing, we're all distant cousins at the end of the day. After all the "historic" things I have lived through in my lifetime, (pandemic anyone?) and what we are on the brink of experiencing potentially from one European lunatic, I'm making a conscious decision to embrace anything and everything that joins us in friendship, rather than separates us. 🇬🇧 🇫🇷

We bailed them out two times in 120 years. America bailed them out in Vietnam and they get to guard the king. What the hell is going on with the military.

Remarkable, and a beautiful reminder of the relationship between France and the UK today.
