French Toast Beer? on the Anvil Foundry 6.5 gallon System

It was supposed to be a HAZY, LACTOSE, MILKSHAKE IPA...but somewhere in the process I got it wrong....Hey, it happens, and that's what makes it fun, well, most of the time. No one likes dumping out gallons of beer, but that's exactly what happened on this batch.

Didn’t mention the 3oz dry hop I added during fermentation…it clogged the dip tube because I didn’t use a mesh bag. Had to open fermenter during transfer and that’s how it got oxidized…🍻

That was all it took to oxidize it? Just opening the fermenter to transfer? Many of us open transfer to a bottling bucket without ruining a batch, just kind of surprised.

I recently just tossed a batch for the first time. Unfortunately it was a full 5 gallons so it hurt. Going forward I’m brewing 3 gallon batches exclusively, less commitment to the beer, less of a sting if I need to toss it and lastly a quicker brew day!

RIP that batch! I have thought about getting that Anvil system. I do love brewing 2.5 gal batches. That is about a case of beers and it works great for kegging (10L Torpedo kegs) or it is not that bit of a pain to fill 24 bottles. With 5 gallon batches, I am often 1 gallon into a batch and I am thinking about the changes I want to make next time, and I am finishing off that last gallon or two just to make room for another beer.

Just dumped my first batch. Mango milkshake IPA. Mango had problems fermenting and gave the beer this sad bitter papery after taste. It was not drinkable - at least not 19l. Down the drain, brewed Belgian tripel to take its place. No guilt here lol.

did dumping the extract toast in the kettle by chance oxidized the beer somehow? i have no clue really but would it have maybe been a better idea to dump the extract in a secondary prior to kegging or drinking afterwards? but then again it could have been the grains maybe they went stale . happend to me twice. i bought idaho pilsner malt last year and made a pilsner with it. smash. it turned out gross tasted like cardboard mustyness and dirt. well thought id try idaho pilsner malt again 6 months later and it was the exact results as the last pilsner idaho malt. also had the same experience with heidleberg malt too. and that was twice as well when brewing with it.

Oxidation really is awful. I did have a question, I brewed your kviek cream ale recipe a few weeks ago. It turned out great. It comes out the tap tasting great, however after 10-15 minutes it seems to become oxidized. Just wondering what your thoughts on this are. Keep up the great video! I really enjoy them!

Nice! But bummer about the flavor! I’ve had some experiences with Lutra lately in lighter beers where I haven’t gotten the result I want. It could be due to PH. Kviek is known to drop the PH lower than optimal in the finished beer. Maybe the flavor you’re picking up is a function of that? I still like the results I get with Lutra in IPAs and Pales but have not been using it lately in lighter beers.

Here’s to the drain pour!! 🍺 I had to do the same recently. I brewed an American Wheat and used only Amarillo hops and the same exact Kviek yeast that you did. Fermented at 85°F the whole time. I also dry hopped it. However, when it was ready to drink, I took a sip and there was no orange notes at all! It should have had tons of orange notes but not a one was found. The only way I can express the taste is that the beer tasted……off….just not right. Down the drain it went. Was yours similar?

  • @ElementaryBrewingCo

@@ElementaryBrewingCo - yeah, in my beer I only added a little less than 1 ounce of dry hops, although I only brew about 3 gallons of beer per batch. I’m guessing the oxidation wiped out those hop flavors in aromas. Let me ask you a question please… Are you able to get much much hop aroma using late edition pellet hops at the end of the boil? I have the claw hammer system too and I don’t seem to have much luck getting hop aroma this way, although that’s been the case with any system that I’ve used. I’ve had some success using hot plugs for flavor and aroma additions, but not with pellets. However, they don’t seem to sell those anymore. 🙂
