Paris is definitely not France, but Parisians are not that bad. I'm a Parisian and you have to understand that since I'm a kid, I see tourists everywhere, everyday (and that's cool) but when people ask me 10 times a day "Where is Notre Dame?" It's kinda boring for us x) Especially if they don't make the effort to speak 2 words in french (just bonjour or merci and we're happy I swear) But I've never seen a french guy being mean with a tourist (there are assholes everywhere also). We do love our food, bread, wine I think it's logic...French girls do shave, it's so funny that people think they don't, where does that cliché come from ? A lot of people do smoke here, I don't have an explanation for that but we're not allowed to smoke in restaurant since 2007. "French people are lazy" well...we work everyday just like everybdy else, generally we have a few weeks of vacations a year. School begins a 8 and ends at 5 pm (sometimes later) yes there are a lot of strikes in France but it's a fundamental right here, when we disagree with laws, our government, when there's something wrong in our country (like the Charlie Hebdo attack) we express our disappointment, our anger or our solidarity. Anyway, eveverybody's welcome here and if you're nice with a french, he'll be nice with you :)

LeSarthois Never seen a woman with hairy armpits, ever...But yeah I also don't see the fuss about it. The thing is that a lot of people think that it's normal in France to see women with hairy legs/armpits, which is really not. Otherwise I don't give a fuck about other girl's body.

***** Saying french women haves hairy armpits is the same as saying american females have moustaches. You and i know it's not true. Perhaps, some of them do. But not worth to stereotype. Actually i cannot even understand how the word lazy could describe an entire country. If a country was lazy, it had no economy, homeless people, no export or import. Just a lot of chairs to sit on. I am dutch ( Les Pay-bas ) and there is absolutely no stereotype i can give you guys. Perhaps the Italians with their slick and hasty attitude. But that's it! I do know alot of stereotypes about the Americans. So as i can say alot of stereotypes the dutch haves.. And about french people smoking alot, if you pay attention, every nation smokes alot. When i walk in Amsterdam, or in London and when you count people that smoke, it always seems alot. Don't pay attention to that stereotype.

I've traveled to France at least a 100 times. I love the French. Best food and wine in the world. France is not the United States. I spent January 01, 2000 in Paris and I loved it. We must remember that we are guests in other countries so please be respectful. I have friends that are French and they are absolutely wonderful. The French are not lazy; if you think that the hospitality in France in done in a 40 hour week you have another thought coming. The French work very hard. Remember the golden rule; treat others and you expect them to treat you. Escargot and frog legs and my favorite. Don't expect Europe to be the United States.

I am a french girl, and wow I didn't think there was so many clichés :o First, for the rude and arrogant, I think a lot of people are like that in the cities, but when you live in the country side of France, people are waaaay different (nevermind, I still love the city). I personally live in the East, were all the wine, cheese and baguettes are made, and FUCK YES I LOVE IT OMFG, I mean... This is awesome. Cheese is life. Comté, roquefort, morbier, cancoillotte, puta de madre there is nothing better on this planet that the french food. If there is ONE thing that upset me a LOT, it's when people say that Paris = France. Go to Bretagne or Franche-Comté or Ardèche, and you will change your mind. Anyway, I really like this video, and it's really interesting to see the point of view of a german guy and an american guy :) (oh and for instance, we don't hate America :p)

They are not very nice ^^' And I find this is a shame (for french people) that tourists see that when they visit Paris... :s Come in Nantes, this is a so cuuute city :3 There is a castle! ^^ And people are more friendly than in Paris!

Hannah H Of course this is a matter of luck (and perhaps natural attributes), everywhere, in all non-English-speaking cities, you will find people who don't want to talk with English speakers and people who want to. Just be lucky. ***** This is a bit of both, from what I know, it goes back to the Hundred Years War, a strong rivalry arose between French and English. This rivalry lasted several centuries. Therefore, it's deeply rooted in the collective memory. Both for French than for English.

Seriously guys ! "French people hate Americans" ? You've never met a French teenager ! A huge part of French teenagers and young adults under the age of 25 (not everyone, but a huge part) is litteraly "in love" with USA. American music, american video games, american TV shows, american brands, american food, amercian way of life... We love all that stuff ! I speak for a big part of young people in France, of course, not everyone is like that. And for a part of teenagers (including me), one of their dream is to go to the US. A part of people in France love USA almost as much as their own country. And personaly I think americans are kind and friendly :) For your information, yes, we like cheese, wine and baguettes (just like everyone, no ?), but, contrary to what you think, that's not the essential part of our alimentation ! It's been almost a month that I didn't ate bread, and that doesn't make me a "fake" french. We like it. That's all. But we like hamburgers too !!! People in Paris (and in other countries) think that Paris = France, but the people in the rest of the France know that's not true. Nice and Toulouse for example are cities almost (I said "ALMOST", you f*****g parisians !) as beautiful as Paris, and you find a lot of wonderful landscapes in France that you may not find around Paris or anywhere in the world. The dinner that takes 4 hours, that's maybe true, but especially in the north of the country (I'm from the south), and with oooooold people, and for a particular occasion. At my home, we finish in 15 minutes. We're lazy because, for most of us, we have a shitty job and we don't earn a lot of money. But we go to work everyday, we're not always sleeping ! The stereotype that says "French people are lazy and always in holidays" is true for... about 0,5 % of the population. The others are hardworking, and take about 20 days of holidays per year. Frogs and escargots ? Holy shit, no ! I hate this. A lot of people hate this, even in France. That's not the taste, that's the aspect, that looks really descasting. But, some people like it, so it's maybe true... I don't really know :/

My father is a (French) farmer and he would be very angry to listen to this American guy saying " French are lazy...": A lot of French never take vacations (especially farmers, but many other people I know work very hard and take vacations only for Christmas or stuff like that.) And when I see how many American tourists come to Paris each year, I guess they don't work as hard as they claim. Sorry but this kind of stereotype reeaaaly sucks. TheIceman567 Maybe but I think both my judgement and yours are true: some French people are lazy, some are very hard worker. And it's the same in every country I think. I guess this stereotype comes from some typical French laws: for example the "35 hours" (a week). But those laws don't fit with the reality at all: a recent survey showed that French people worked actually 40 hours a week (in average) which is exactly the EU average. But trust me: I know a lot of people in France who should be very rich if they were paid for each hour worked.

Yea, French for the most part are lazy. They work some 35 hours per week, get 5 weeks of vacation per year and still complain (strikes). Compare that to America, Japan, Korea, Mexico, etc., where people work 50+ hours a week and get as little as 2-week vacation time. So there's a little truth in that stereotype.

  • @Csmeau4

French people aren't rude or arrogant. They are just proud of their country, and their particularities. French people don't hate American people. French women do shave. Wine, cheese and baguettes are kind of the basics in French cuisine since centuries. So we do like them, and make them delicious. France is not Paris. We have the mountains, country, historical sites all around, seas, quite everything. Paris is not all. French people do smoke a lot. I personnally don't, but I would say 1 French out of 3 regularly smokes. French food is very varied, delicious, and we spend much time eating when the dinner is important. Christmas for example. I am lazy. I don't know about the other people, but I am, and I think they are. We all like women from other countries, so that is why you think French women are classy. We eat snails and frog legs very rarely, like twice a year. But those are something you must taste at least one. The truth was spoken.

+Csmeau4 You're false about our lazyness, on the paper we work 35h per week and in the reality it's more and we work basically the same number of hours as others europeans. However, we have one of the best (if not the best, have to check) productivity in an hour.

Benoit ROUX Europe in General has more holidays off than the US. Most companies in the U.S. 3 wks vacation is all you get and 7 holidays which might get 5 of those off and if someone is on salary in the U.S. they can wind up working 50-60 hours a week and get paid the same if working 40 hours a week. I known people who don't even take all their time off and lose it don't care. That's why Americans think Europeans are lazy. Does the French still recognize when the U.S. liberated it from the Germans ww2? And noticed horse is a delicacy made sure I didn't order that in Nice. I found the French friendly but didnt go to Paris.

+DD M Well, thing is, Parisians, they live in the fucking capital! they are busy, they walk fast, live fast, got a place to be, or are just tired and want to go back home from work and rest, and they'll be a little short with the tourist because that's how capital's folk are. Other factor is the fact that we are actually institutionally and culturally very polite (yes, it might seem backwards in this demonstration, stay until the end) so when someone talks to us but forgo the customary polite words ('excusez-moi' sorry, 'Boujour' hello' and 'merci' thanks) we find THEM rude and don't make an effort for them, or actively get cross, but that's not because we're rude, but because your failure to comply to our expectation on politeness made us think you're the rude on and devaluate you, thus coming across as both rude and arrogant because you don't know why we're doing it and assume that's just who we are. Next time, just try to greet people, you'll probably see a huge improvement. For reference, asking someone for direction, translated from French goes "Hello, sorry, can you tell me where this is? Oh, thanks, bye, have a good day."

  • @benenuts5202

I am French and I don't say that the French hate Americans. It's more cultural, French and Americans have very different cultures and it's true that sometimes we find that Americans are a little strange but it's not enough to hate you. In France, we sayd "who likes, punishes well". However, I admit that the story with Bush wasn't appreciated by the French. Are we arrogant? Yes, but I think the real question is "are we more arrogant than others?" and that, I don't know. Historically, our rivalry is very strong with the English, which is why we are reluctant to speak English and why we sometimes glorifies our language too. It may be arrogant but it's a very strong heritage in lot of French minds. "French women don't shave?" From my personnal experience with French womens, it's false but it's true they are classy. "Beautiful"? I think all women are beautiful, no more French women than anyone. Yes French love wine, cheese and baguettes but personnaly I have never eating escargot and frog legs.

Benenuts In case you may be interested in a little known bit of French history, the last King of France, Louis Philippe, lived for a while in an apartment in Boston, MA, when on the run from the French revolutionaries and an assortment of angry husbands and fathers of his occasional conquests. There is a plaque on the outer wall but the interior is not open to the public. It is above the oldest restaurant in America. J'espère que ce n'est divertissant.

What you say about France also reminds me of how foreign visitors see the state of NY. When they want to visit America one of their choices is to see NY and they end up visiting NYC where a lot of New Yorker's are loud, have the thick Italian accent, come off kind of rude, and begin to sound annoying after a while. So when they have a bad visit their experience is ruined and then believe that NY in general is bad place to go. But they just visited New York City. There is far more to New York than just NYC. I am a native New Yorker and you wouldn't see me wasting my time in NYC. I'm located near the Adirondacks so everything up here is farm land and mountains. If I visited such places as France, Germany, England, or even Italy I would skip the big tourist cities and go see the country side. Much more to see than a bunch of big fancy buildings. :)

French are the descendants of ancient Romans to a certain degree I think, much more than the Italians, who are more the descendants of ancient Roman slaves in my opinion. French are: - logical, sophisticated, good at logics, mathematics, abstract and formal sciences - lack of imagination, matter of fact - belief in formal jurisdiction - tend to centralized government and national structure (Paris - Rom) - contrasts between culture of masculinity on the one hand but of frivolous decadence on the other hand - tend to generalize their specific national values to the entire world - everyone born in France or in French colonies is a French citizen All these points were also present in the ancient Roman empire (but completely different from today's Italy, which is in some points exactly the opposite of the ancient Roman culture).

I have found that if you initiate a conversation with a French person (obviously in France) with "Excusez-moi, parlez-vous anglais s'il vous plait?", they are an awful lot friendlier than if you launch straight into English. That's seen as offensive and arrogant. Which it is. If you go to Germany/Austria and ask "Entschuldigen Sie, sprechen Sie Englisch, bitte?" the people will fall all over themselves to show how good their English is. Which it is. If you go to Greece and say "Me syncho̱reíte , miláte angliká parakaló̱?" You'll get chatting, be invited to a cousin's wedding and have a friend for life! Personal experience.

Charles Roucher Sorry I realize i'm really bad in english lol. It was an answer to comments in youtube that I saw, not really to the video. Paris (which represents 2% of the french population), is absolutely not representative of french culture at all and people made theories more or less seriously because of the behaviour of people living in paris. French don't hate you just because you don't speak french, it's completely ridiculous obviously. In France we love english, 90% of the music we listen is in english even if we don't understand them. Can we see american people sing french song everyday or foreign songs most of the time? Haha, I know the answer. If you have the experience of angry people in Paris who have already seen 50 tourists who ask their ways, of course if you are the 51th they will be bored, such as everybody over the world. But it's not because you don't speak french, everybody know that it's a difficult langage... But one thing is true : We are not good in english, just like me ^^. Of course if you come in a country it's to you to make an effort. If I go to the USA I will try to speak english and not french, it's a question of respect. French people are NOT lazy. You think that because of strikes which are very mediatised because when people don't like a proposition of the government they want to be listen and don't want to be passive. In france we have one of the BIGGEST productivity in the world at work. You don't believe me? Look at that and translate it if you want : www.france.cz/La-productivite-francaise-parmi-les-plus So, don't tell us we are lazy. (You say we are arrogant, but some people say that 65 million of people are lazy by ignorance. isn't it arrogant and rude? If french people say that in the USA, people are lazy, everybody would think that this is an evidence of french arrogance, isn't it?). French people are not arrogant and rude. You can say they are a little "cold", but NOT rude (except in Paris for some people bored to see tourists all the time, don't forget that this is the most visited coutry and people see people everyday, it can be difficult...). We smoke a lot, yes. So, some answer are true. Nevertheless, it's not a bad video.

The thing travelers and foreigners alike must realise in Paris is that French people who are not from Paris have experienced those constantly angry people (otherwise named assholes) who will literally take their daily frustration on you if you're unlucky enough to come nearby. So whatever arrogance you guys perceive is certainly true but it is not directed at you specifically, it is not directed at you being a foreigner. I was born in Lille, northern France a few hours drive from Paris along the Belgian border, so I used to think I am from nowhere really, I was born there but never made a great deal about it, life being about moving out of your comfort zone in my view. One day though I had to move to Paris to start a new job like many French people do (France remains very centralised job-wise even if it has improved), and there is one thing people made me realise we do a lot in Northern France is interacting. We don't mind getting into what seems to be a meaningless conversation with our baker. It is just a way to aknowledge that this guy got up at 3 in the morning to bake the bread you will enjoy that day. So he kind of deserves your attention and courtesy even for a couple of minutes. Then one day I was struggling with finding my way to a famous boulevard from wherever I was and I thought let's ask to that newspaper kiosk who must be a nice guy. WRONG. The guy asked me if he looked like a freaking GPS. And then I realised, okay some people just have a shitty life that they have chosen for themselves and cannot deal with it. I mean if you work as a taxi or in a kiosk in the middle of Paris, you are bound to get questions from tourists, right? So yeah you'll most definitely find the occasional arrogant or rude people. But like in any new city you must learn the codes and not take it personally whenever you feel offended. Because there are lots of very nice people in Paris ready to help you, it is crucial not giving up on your positive attitude. In Paris more particularly you have to sometimes engage people in what they do first then ask your question. I would not call it flattery but people like to see that you are genuinely interested. Even a doorman in a hotel and that is true anywhere in France will expect respect from his clients. The expression "the client is king" does not exist in France, first because we chopped off our king long time ago, but foremost because the degree of service you will get equals your degree of courtesy. In other words, your dollars alone will get you nowhere. Another anecdote I remember Oprah Winfrey in one of her TV show saying how disappointed she was by her trip to Paris. Apparently, she stopped to a jewellery in a famous part of Paris when the store was closing down. The girl who was closing the store told her to come back tomorrow, and Oprah Winfrey was obviously very offended. She immediatly thought that girsl is so rude and lazy (those two stereotypes) that she cannot leave the store open for me a few more minutes. There is two things Oprah Winfrey has not realised: 1/ her TV show are not broadcasted in France - no one knows who she is and even when people know they could not care less - this is why Hollywood stars come to Paris or FRance in general they are not being hassled by the public and there still is an acceptance that anyone is entitled to privacy 2/ certain businesses (such as banks or jewelleries) have security measures - an employee has to close the store at a precise time because if she does not the security compagny will call to check why the alarm is beeping and ultimately they may even drop by. It sounds silly but there are procedures. So really, when I saw her on TV (I was abroad at the time) sharing the typical stereotype, I thought to myself how many Oprah Winfrey are they in this World? And I basically thought she actually is either dumb or arrogant. I was upset at the time because it was unfair to call all Parisians arrogant based on that very short experience but that's how you make a prejudice even stronger. I mean when Oprak says something unfortunately lots of Americans (and other countries) are watching so it really is bad publicity. I just wish she could have figure out what was going on with that jewelry store. Let say if you are used to be served by others and to treat them as servants (even when technically speaking they are) Paris is probably going to be a nightmare for you. Even at a café you will rarely hear the locals scream "garçon!" or it has to be done in a very gentle maneer. If a waiter feels like you are being condescendant towards him, he will make your time at his terrace miserable. Paris has improved a lot, but as I said it pays off to learn certain codes in the way to address people.

Very interested in this series and how it develops. I find it odd that Americans think they have a good work ethic when they waste so much time while at work on Reddit, Facebook, and so on. Then they have the nerve to stereotype other countries as being lazy, because they work fewer hours per week than Americans. Americans could work fewer hours in a week if they were more efficient at their jobs. Productivity goes up. Pay increases due to increased productivity. The need to work more hours decreases. Just my 2 cents. PS. I am an American.

taytay817 I did. And you are correct that the US has been deemed the "most productive country" in the world (see here: www.forbes.com/sites/susanadams/2013/10/30/the-pursuit-of-happiness/), but my statement was about the people in it. Productivity as defined by economists is GDP over hours worked. That's all well and good, but it doesn't mean that the people are productive. If a machine is more efficient, the person is not necessarily so. I was talking about the number of hours paid to work vs the number of hours worked while at work. This article does a wonderful job of explaining this idea in more detail (www.washingtonmonthly.com/magazine/january_february_2012/features/the_myth_of_american_productiv034576.php?page=all).

  • @MrLAntrim

    @MrLAntrim

    10 жыл бұрын

checksandbalances0 Not a study. It was an upset CEO who couldn't work out a business deal with France so he stereotyped them. Most of the time when someone says, "There's a study... look it up." it doesn't really exist, as if it did, they would have cited something more specific. If you can find the study, send me a link. I would be very interested in seeing their research. I found my source and am happy to provide it here: www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financialcrisis/9882422/US-boss-berates-French-for-three-hour-working-day.html Also, the point I was (and still am) making is the amount of work done while at work. The amount of time spent on Reddit and other non-work related sites is becoming more of a problem. Here is a Forbes article saying exactly that. www.forbes.com/sites/cherylsnappconner/2012/07/17/employees-really-do-waste-time-at-work/ And here is the follow up article about this topic from Forbes. www.forbes.com/sites/cherylsnappconner/2013/09/07/who-wastes-the-most-time-at-work/ The last one pretty much says that the younger an employee is the more time they waste being unproductive at work. So back to the original point. Americans have the greatest productivity as defined by economists (GDP over number of hours worked), but the amount of time they waste at work means they owe most of their (economic) productivity to machinery and technological advancements and not the people doing the work. Imagine what America could accomplish if they worked while at work and surfed the web while at home. They could work fewer hours, get paid more and still have a booming economy. I'll leave you with another article that talks about the French not wanting to keep stores open on Sundays. It includes a really nice graph telling you that the Germans work less than pretty much everyone, have most of their stores closed on Sundays, and yet they are still stereotyped as being efficient and have the strongest economy in Europe. www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/currency/2013/10/why-the-french-are-fighting-over-work-hours.html

My most horrible airport experience ever was at Charles de Gaulle at Paris. I needed help and nobody was able or willing to speak English. Then I tried German, and I swear the temperature dropped to below 0 Celsius. I refused to visit France again for 10 years. My next experiences were in the south of France where people were friendly, polite and non hostile. I asked someone how to get to downtown Marseilles from the port and the person took me to the bus stop and paid the driver for me! Oh, you are very right, people are inclined to be more friendly if you take the trouble to learn some of their language. The second time I had taken the trouble to learn some French, and [probably because my French was painfully bad] people would interject "me I 'elp you" before I had finished murdering their language, even in Paris!

Full disclosure, I am an American who loves France, the French and the language. My take on the France vs America thing is that we are so much alike that we see in each other what we don't like so much about ourselves, so we project that dislike on each other. Both are convinced of the superiority of their countries and their cultures and their languages. French was the language of the educated and of international trade and diplomacy for centuries. English has replaced it, leaving french in second place. Of course the French hate that. But we are also very sociable peoples, we just go about it differently. The French are more reserved, shy even. American see that as rudeness or snobishness. The French cover their shyness with an aloofness. Americans are bold and brash, and loud with our friendliness and that is startling to the French. And most of the rest of Europe for that matter. Americans expect everyone who comes here to speak english and the French expect the same of those who go to France. Both countries' school systems are terrible at teaching foreign languages. The French often learn some english but if they can't speak it perfectly, they are too shy to speak it at all. Americans just don't learn languages for the most part and when we do, we learn bad spanish. Americans, go to France and use a few words and phrases in french and you will be appreciated. Paris, maybe not, but Parisiennes are like that to everyone, even other French people form outside of Paris. Kind of like New Yorkers thinking they are the only civilized people in the US. Vive La France et/and God Bless America.

As a French woman living in Paris, I really have to agree with most of the stereotypes (except the third one about shaving of course...), it's unfortunate but most french people actually tend to dislike americans since the 60s (thanks de Gaulle !) but there's two kind of french people: the ones that hate everything american (I know, I was bullied my whole scholarship just for being the girl that loved the USA) and then the ones that are totally in love with the USA, there's no middle ground here :/ And then, most French people definitely are LAZY like hell! Not all of them are, some people actually still work really hard, but there is a majority of French or at least a part of the country that you hear the most about (and you're most often bothered by when you're French) that can be considered as lazy since they're not fighting for their rights anymore as you said, they're just always striking for the sake of striking because they're not use to work hard... But you know we do have good food though and some of us are actually nice ;) Thanks for the video anyway it was genuinely hilarious and refreshing to watch ;) Loved it :)

We admire Americans for their TV shows (in France they suck) and because you seem to succeed almost effortless ! We hate americans when they beat us at the Olympics, that's all ;) It's forbidden to smoke inside public places (restaurants, bars...) but you're still allowed to smoke if you eat on the terrace. You're right, France is so much more than just Paris. There's so many things to do and to discover in other regions (Bretagne, Aquitaine, PACA...) ! Haha ! Meals actually last forever. Every time I have "family meals" we start at 12h and we drink coffee at 18h (not exaggerating) ! Strikes happen really often and usually they are organized by laborer unions... In France, we generally say that officials are the laziest... I won't comment on that. ^^ Thanks for that great and entertaining video, Continuez comme ça ! :)

Fulu Shouxi Haha no I think I understand... Google translate is not really reliable (especially when you translate french !) Basically I said that most of broadcasted TV shows are american (criminal minds, mentalist, dr house etc...) and that most of our french programs are strongly inspired by american TV (e.g talk shows) I also said that usually when you ask a french (young) where he wants to live : in the US. For many french, the fact of being american is a professional and personal achievement factor. Evidently I don't say it as ultimate truth, just that as a young french woman (studying at university) I see it now when we have to choose our student exchange destination, and even when we talk to american students. Then I told the guy that he didn't have to be rude, that he could express his ideas without being nasty. I hope it helped you to understand a little more what I said ^^

As far as the stereotype regarding the French being lazy goes, we could certainly pull out some objective facts such as: 1) It's illegal to work more than 35 hours a week here. 2) The months of vacation that are standard 3) The 2-3 hour lunch breaks 4) Regular striking over the pettiest of things 5) Most establishments being closed on Sunday etc.

  • @Sparghold

I'm french and I have to admit that everything you said guys was absolutly true ! :p Exept for the cigarette in restaurant : actually you are not allowed to smoke in closed public places (pubs, restaurants, trains...) due to a european law BUT a lot of places have been created smoking areas inside and separated from the regular pub or restaurant so that chilly french people can smoke in a warm place haha

+Esther M A big thanks as I'm an American Francophile myself and I quite liked looking over all of these replies from many real French citizens over the last few minutes that I've read. By the way many of us here LOVE & ADORE the French as well and its only a dated super silly stereotype that many of us view the French or other mainland Europeans in a sort of "this & that kind of way" now.

Something about French culture grates on a lot of American people...I can't quite put my finger on it but I suspect that it is in part due to their more liberal approach to the work / leisure balance. Americans believe that if you aren't miserable due to overwork, then you aren't working hard enough. I would be curious to hear if other cultures view the French in a similar way as do some Americans.

I would like to expand on my further statement in hopes this may clarify my statement. With my travels in the past 20 years (16+ countries). I have found that citizens of other countries tend to think Americans are like what they see in the (American) movies or TV. Most of the movies and TV shows are either based in New York City or Los Angeles. This is simply not the case. Each region is very different. With the size of the US, this should be expected. Just as I've found from my experience Germans from Berlin are different from Italians from Rome. They are not better or worse, just different. The distance between these two countries (approx 1180 km) is approximately the same as between New York and Atlanta Ga. Not even half way across the US. As I'm sure Jim can attest too, Northerners (New Yorkers) are typically more boisterous than southerners. Not always, but this is the general rule. I believe this is a trait that Europeans bestow upon Americans. Ger vs USA has posted in the past a video on what Europeans think of Americans. I believe you would notice, most of the traits portrayed are what we would consider northerner traits. P.S. Before I get grief from Northerners, you know what traits we southerners have.

I'm french and it's my second year living in the US so I can clarify some of these stereotypes. People are arrogant and rude mostly in Paris and everyone see Paris as France itself but in the south of France it's a different story. We don't hate Americans, we hate those who think the US are on top of the world, who are narrow minded who don't wanna hear, taste, learn or try anything if it comes from abroad because what is not American doesn't matter to them. It's just one type of Americans we hate. France doesn't equal Paris as the French Riviera is by far the best place in France. (No, we can't smoke in restaurant anymore, sadly) There are lazy people in France, just like everywhere. So some of these stereotypes are not very accurate but there's always a little part of truth (except for the women, they ALL SHAVE, ALL OF THEM)

    1. The French are arrogant and rude. That is not true. People see us like that, even my boyfriend sees French people as rude people (he is Australian) because he kinda got rejected by my mum but my mum is not even French. She is a 100% Chinese lady and really traditionnal about her culture at some point. Everybody else welcomed him really warmly and we even stayed for 2 weeks at my grandma's place and then my auntie's place, even if they didn't know him so. French people generally don't like to talk to people they don't really know, I'd say. Most foreigners would misinterprate that and think it's just that the French are arrogant. Most people that come to France for a short amount of time will just say "I did not make any friends." because we value longterm relationships the most. You don't get friends really quickly there but when you have friends, it's forever (well depends on everybody but mostly). For instance, if you do the shopping, the cashier lady won't really talk to you, she will just put the stuff on the counter and beep them. But if you get to see her often, she will recognize you and start to talk to you and in the end could become friends with you. Might be a simple example but that's all I could think of. First time I came to Australia, my first shock was that every single person I saw, I just was saying Hi! to them to be polite (like even the person at the cashier desk) and instead of just saying Hi back, they would ask me "How are you going today?" even if I didn't know anything about them. So in conclusion, we are not rude, we are not arrogant, we just prefer to KNOW people first. 2. French women don't shave. I personally don't shave, I epilate (wax). :P But I think it's true AND false. There are women that shave, and there are women that don't. It's the same EVERYWHERE on the planet. But as most places on the planet, most women shave just because it is more "socially" accepted. Some think it's really unfair that guys can keep their hairs and it would be considered as ugly for girls. I do it because I just don't find it pretty and it is a quite bad feeling to touch your legs and see how "rough" they could be, or to sweat more from your armpits because of the fur you could have. 3. The French love wine, cheese and baguettes. Before moving to Australia, I would have said it is false but now I see how bad the bread and cheese are here, I would say it's true. I really miss these. During some "fancy" dinners, you could have like the Entrée, then the meal, then the dessert, aaaand to finish the CHEESE on a platter. Of course, the meal is served with a loaf of nice bread, or a baguette. Wine, I don't like it myself but it's pretty true, especially where I lived (close to Bordeaux) where all the vineyards are. People like wine, they even pay attention to the year the wine was made so they can tell you if it is a good old wine or not. 4. The French hate Americans. So I don't even know where that comes from but I think we've heard also the stereotype that Americans hate Frenchies so... It is not true, however our English is pretty bad (but let's say Americans' French level is bad as well so fair's fair). I would even say that a lot of people here would LOVE to go to the USA, visit and stuff. Some have the "American dream" even without being American themselves. What people don't like about America, it is that most of the time, we see your people as thinking they're the centre of all attention, trying to run the world and such. I remember a while ago, there was some shooting in some city in the US and a French journalist came there. She said to some American lady something like "In France, we think that if the citizens hadn't access to weapons, this would never had happenned." What did the American lady said ? She got literally MAD at the journalist and started yelling at her that "America is the land of FREEDOM. We are allowed to have guns to protect ourselves from these terrorists so THINK AMERICAN ! THINK FREEDOM !"... What an arrogant thing to say if you ask me. "Think American.". Anyways, I think that's what French people don't like about America, just that they think they're the most important people on the planet but as everywhere else, it is just a PART of the population and not everybody is like this stupid lady who yelled at the journalist, or like Donald Trump. Most French people like America, they like Americans, the would love to go to the US. If an American person visits France, they will think it is so fancy and they will talk to them, try to know them better, etc. 5. Paris = France. I suppose the stereotype is true for most foreigners which is really sad though. I suppose most tourists would think France = Paris or France = Cannes because that's all they hear about France. I really like Paris (not like some Frenchies in the comments). It is a really lively city, you can have anything you want or you need there, and most of the events would take place in Paris (like conventions, concerts, etc.). All the transports to travel just into Paris are fantastic, and to go to Paris as well (so much faster to do Paris/Bordeaux than something like La-Roche-Sur-Yon/Bordeaux even if it is closer on the map). But what's amazing about France is that we are a small country with so MANY different regions. You go to the north of the country, you'll see so many amazing brick houses, you'll go to the east, you'll see all these colourful Alsacian houses, this "Germanic" culture and rocky streets, you'll go a little bit souther and oh dear ! MOUNTAINS ! All these chalets and sceneries of hills and mountains are beautiful. I am not even mentionning all the Atlantic coast with Britany (Bretagne) and all the beautiful villages, or even Basque country which is a mixture between mountains and oceans. Even the centre of France is beautiful with volcanoes and hills, and...nature. France is beautiful and wherever you go, you'll never be deceived. Nothing looks alike.

    6. The French love their cigarettes. I wanna say "Meh." to that one. Yes there are a lot of smokers here, but I am pretty sure there are a lot of smokers everywhere on Earth. Plus, you are not allowed to smoke in public places and the past governments have been doing everything for decreasing the amount of smokers in France. The price is incredibly high, and they keep adding more and more gross pictures to the packs of cigarettes for people to stop. 7. The French have fantastic food, and meals take forever. I can't lie, French food is really the best. As I said about the diversity of French sceneries is even depicted in the food. You would have fantastic Alsacian food like flammekueche or sauerkraut in Alsace, or fondue and tartiflette in Savoie. If you go to the south of France, you'll have fantastic fruity/veggie stuff like Ratatouile or so. We know how to cook and we just like to eat. However, the thing about "meals take forever", it is sadly true. It is not true in "normal life" but for holiday dinners like Christmas or family reunions, yes it does take forever because they have like all the different meals... appetizers, entrée, meal, dessert, cheese, coffee...etc. It is just neverending... 8. French people are lazy. I don't think we are but I don't know ? Where does that come from ? Right now, we have a really high rate of unemployed people but we are still going through an economical crisis. I think maybe people think we are lazy is because they see French people as people who do strikes every single day. I think it is just on one part of the population (and jobs) but most of us are not lazy. If we want something, we just have to work hard to achieve it. Comparing French education to American education though, I would say that we work way more than Americans. (I remember my Canadian friend from the english speaking side of the country who came to France for one year, you could just compare our level to theirs and we just were seeing more stuff in every single subject than them (except English where we suck at lol). We generally don't really like our teachers, post office workers or train workers because we think THEY're lazy and complain about everything. They want more paid hours for not working, more holidays and stuff, when they already don't work a lot (especially teachers, they get so many holidays !!). That's not true for all these jobs but I think that's what most French people think about most of them. 9. French women are classy and beautiful. No, not really. I just think there are beautiful women everywhere on the planet, and there are as well ugly women everywhere on the planet. Some in France are classy, some are not. However, I think we have more of a "one trend" thing when it's about fashion. I think there is this thing you'll call "fashionable" and "trendy" in France, and then there a few other styles (like let's say rock) but that will be really of a minority. I was fascinated the first time I went to the UK, or to Germany, and to see SO MANY different styles everywhere. I think in France we have one MAIN style and most women will consider THIS main style beautiful so maybe that's what makes them kinda different to other women in the world ? 10. The French eat snails and froglegs. K so that's the biggest stereotype I have to freaking DAILY fight against with my boyfriend who keeps reminding me that French people eat snails and frogs all the time. Personally, I NEVER have and never will. I know that some French people eat snails but only for fancy dinners like family reunions or Christmas dinners, and that's it. It is not a meal you would get like getting a McDonald's for lunch. You would probably find snails at really fancy restaurants as well because it is more of a fancy food than anything else. About froglegs, I suppose some people do but it is not a common thing. And even if that was, I don't get really what's the matter about it ? Humans eat animals so what ? You can eat pigs, cows, chickens and you think it is weird to eat a small animal like a frog ? In Australia they eat kangaroos, my German friend said she eats horses, so what ? We are meant to eat to survive so I don't really understand why people are always so disgusted when they "remind" you that French people eat snails and froglegs.

Adriene Well, you probably didn't read me well because I explained it all... In my example I was talking about a cashier lady but it could be anyone else like colleagues or classmates. You don't normally talk to strangers but if you get to see them regularly you will recognise their faces and then you will start talking to them. That's how you can get friends there, you need to wait because we value long-term relationships and if we know we will never see you again what's the point of asking you how was that appointment at the dentist that you got last week ? If you see the same person a lot like a colleague, of course you'll start talking to them and that's how everything starts.

Gwladys Bosson You have to gain something by friendly interaction? You must know that they will become a friend in your life? Isn't anything spontaneous, also for most people at least..small talk just makes you happy. Or makes someone else's day.

  • @Guudys

    @Guudys

Adriene Well that's not how we act. It happens that some persons talk to strangers but most of the time people might freak out because that will be too random or creepy. If you are out, you still want to be in your comfort zone and if someone you don't know start to talk to you, they've reached that comfort zone and you might actually react like being scared or cringing or whatever other reaction. It is really rare that someone will spontaneously talk to you because most people that do that are freaks. For instance some random guy started to talk to my best friend a couple of months ago in a train, she was so freaked out that she pretended she was arrived and just changed of wagon. People don't like to be bothered. I just don't know how to explain it properly but if you're hanging out with friends, you don't want some random person come and talk to you. You were in your comfort zone before but you'd feel less "self confident" and safe if there's an "intruder". It is like, I can't remember what other European country, I think Spain or UK, can't remember... they were like "In France they go to the nightclub to have fun with THEIR friends, in our country we go there to meet new people." It is just a different trait, different way of thinking in our culture, we do act friendly with acquaintances and friends.

Where as us in America are open and loud and don't think much about this as it is part of who we are. However, when we travel, we need to be respectful of other cultures. My visits to France have be awesome. The French are very nice and polite if your approach is proper. If we are rude to others, how come our expectations are that people will not be rude to you as well. Start by a simple greeting, then be polite as say please etc. You will see what a difference it will make.

Then we're not lazy, we don't wanna loose our freedom to work ! Our cook is the best of the world ! Evry foreign people who have taste our snails and our frogs have loed it ! Paris doesn't represente all the country. You just have to leave the capital and ask to people anywhere you are in France, they're gonna say you that Parisian are " des gros cons" ! Finally, We don't hate American people, we just hate the governement who thinks that he is the most important in the world and who think that he is the guardians of the peace in the world ! But we're very nice !!! (but there is a true stereotypes : we moan a lot) :D
