French Saint-Chamond Tanks Attack German Lines HD All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) Part 1

The Saint-Chamond was the second French tank to enter service during the First World War, with 400 manufactured from April 1917 to July 1918. Although not a tank by a strict definition of a heavily armoured turreted vehicle, it is generally accepted and described as such in accounts of early tank development. It takes its name from the commune of Saint-Chamond where its manufacturers Compagnie des forges et aciéries de la marine et d'Homécourt (FAMH) were based.
Born of the commercial rivalry existing with the makers of the Schneider CA1 tank, the Saint-Chamond was an underpowered and fundamentally inadequate design. Its principal weakness was its Holt caterpillar tracks. They were much too short in relation to the vehicle's length and weight (23 tons). Later models attempted to rectify some of the tank's original flaws by installing wider and stronger track shoes, thicker frontal armour and the more effective 75mm Mle 1897 field gun.
Altogether 400 Saint-Chamond tanks were built, including 48 unarmed caisson tanks. The Saint-Chamond tanks remained engaged in various actions until October 1918, belatedly becoming more effective since combat had moved out of the trenches and onto open ground. Eventually, the Saint-Chamond tanks were scheduled to be entirely replaced by imported British heavy tanks.
Germany's submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards & The film received widespread critical acclaim for faithfulness to the source material's anti-war message
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 92% of 76 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.4/10. The website's consensus reads, "Both timely and timeless, All Quiet on the Western Front retains the power of its classic source material by focusing on the futility of war."[10]
Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 75 out of 100, based on 31 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[11]
Reubyn Coutinho, on Netflix Junkie, wrote, "It does not pull its punches with the screenplay having the potential to make you squirm...The film touches upon the loneliness, the catalyst of desperation, the fear of civilians in battle, and the chaos."[12] Ben Kenigsberg, writing for The New York Times, found the film to be less impressive than the 1930 version, but appreciated the pounding soundtrack. He also praised the addition of a parallel plot tracking the armistice, even if it diverged from the first person narrative of the novel. He found the tweaked fate of the characters to be narratively powerful
All Quiet on the Western Front (German: Im Westen nichts Neues) is a 2022 German epic anti-war film based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque. Directed by Edward Berger, it stars Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl, Sebastian Hülk, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic and Devid Striesow. Set in the closing years of World War I, it follows the life of German soldier Paul Bäumer, who, after enlisting in the German Army with his friends, finds himself at risk to the realities of war, shattering the early hopes of becoming heroes.
All Quiet on the Western Front premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2022, and was released to streaming on Netflix on October 28, 2022.[2] In August 2022, the film was announced as .[3]

Like many WW1 tanks, the saint chammond were barely functional in the muddied no man's land, full of artillery shells pits, trenches, broken barbed wire and other obstacles. The saint chammond in particular were prone to get stuck all the time because of their too heavy front part, with the cannon, and the too short tracks they had. But even so, for the germans, those primitive tanks were still metal monsters, invulnerable to most firearms and heavily armed with machinegun and their signature 75mm saint chammond canon (the canon was manufactured in the saint chammond town, in France, which gave them their name).

These tanks are obviously made for the film as there are only a handful of restored non-functioning examples and even fewer that can actually run. Those being replicas themselves. Still, I find it a shame that while they got the hull and the armament down fairly accurately, they couldn't do the same for the running gear. If you look closely, you'll notice that the tracks, drive sprockets, road wheels, idlers and return rollers are from an old Soviet BMP-1 whereas the Saint-Chamond's running gear was based off that of the Holt crawler tractor. Now it seems to me that if they could spend enough to fabricate an almost perfect replica of the Saint-Chamond's hull and guns then it probably wouldn't be too far off to think they could spend a little more on locating and salvaging old Holt tractors to restore and fabricate the running gear for the film for just a little more!

I think it’s a lot easier to make a chamond-shaped box to put on a pre-existing vehicle, rather than make a whole new st-chamond from the ground up (as you’d kinda have to do to get the suspension to look right). Of course they could’ve used CGI for it

@@peteranderson1624 Yes, but like I said in my comment. There are enough old, salvageable Holt crawler tractors out there that could have been restored enough to working order for this film.
