can dont + article be used for inanimate things? e.g. 'the guitar whose string needs replacing'

and... can où be used if the place/time in question is the subject. e.g. 'the park that was nice' or 'the day that began the month'? i assume not but wd like clarification

I have an example extracted from a book: Imaginez un pays dont les habitants travaillent trente-cinq heures par semaine. I can't understand: travailler de quelque chose???? is travailler followed by de???

Actually, per the first example, it is also poor English to end a sentence with a preposition. You could/should restructure that sentence to say, "The situation about which I am speaking." Then "dont" conveys more clearly to "about which".
