French Press Cold Brew | The BEST Recipe!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, we show you how to make cold brew coffee in a French press.
Cold brew coffee is loved by millions for its deep flavor, but also its great smoothness. The reason for both: Cold brew uses time, rather than temperature, for its extraction. The result is an absence of bitter and acidic compounds that are often extracted in hot brewing processes.
In addition, cold brew is probably the simplest way there is to brew coffee: just combine ground coffee and water, wait 12 to 24 hours, and strain it out. That’s literally all there is to it.
At the end of that time, you end up with a coffee concentrate that is naturally low in acid and in bitterness, and that can last a week or two in your refrigerator. When you’re ready to drink, add water to the concentrate and you’ve got a great cup -- or glass -- of coffee in seconds.

Well - I guess I'm not a connoisseur or barista - I started making "cold press" coffee my way recently. Actually, I use the term the local coffee shop uses, with the normal ratio of coarse ground to water for hot coffee. It's not strong enough but I probably didn't give it enough time. And maybe it needs more beans. But I don't understand making a coffee concentrate then adding back water. Yes, if you want enough for a week - but as simple as it is, a litre pot of French press is simple to fix often ... BTW, to reduce the acid in ordinary hot French press, don't use boiling water. Try about 200°. It's definitely better.

Thanks so much for this. I watched your video on making the cold brew in a mason jar and you stated there that you found the "sweet spot" for steeping at 16 hours - here it's 20. Is that because of the type of coffee used or because of the larger amount of grounds & water?

It more a matter of personal preference. As an experiment, split your batch into 3 parts, and let one steep for 14 hours, one for 16, and one for 20. You'll notice the flavors change quite a bit. Whichever you enjoy the most is the best!

I tried a 1:7 ratio per another recommendation and it was so bitter!! Will try 1:5 thanks!!

You may want to try a higher ratio then like 1:10! Bitter would likely indicate over extraction, so you want to use a higher proportion of water. Good luck!

Thank you sooo much for this. I have simple question can you tell me the ratio of the coffee and the water you have used I usually make for each gram of coffee = 12-14 grams

He mentioned in the video at 1:12 that it is 4 or 5 parts water to 1 part coffee grounds.

I keep reading things with wildly different ratios. I'm going with this video simply because I think the guy in it is super pleasant. Not sure if he reads these, but... I like you Mr. Coffee. You seem like a good dude with good coffee advice. Also, I don't know if you watch Star Trek, but I get strong Neelix vibes off of you. Neelix is one of my favorite Star Trek characters, so... I'll go with this recipe. Trying it tonight in the new French Press I bought because I didn't know cold brew coffee makers were a thing until I heard you say it at the end of the video. Also, just put my coffee maker away because the past couple of pots I've made in the French Press were great. Also... for people who don't know who Neelix is, here's the coffee/Star Trek crossover: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Yq2hrKZ9gLXHlpM.html&ab_channel=luckysurfer.sci-fi

Why did you leave the french press out at room temperature when making cold brew, as opposed to the mason jar method, which in your other video, you put in the refrigerator?

  • @rooky3526

Having consistent temperature helps a lot in brewing your coffee and putting it in a fridge will give your brew a drastic change in temperature, relatively speaking. If you really want to put it in the fridge, I guess you can start with adding cold water to it instead of room temperature then put it inside of a fridge.

The way he makes it is for a concentrate. You would probably have to do less coffee and more water for regular drinking.
