As a junior in the 70s, our club Ealing Youth Judokwai, was chosen to represent the UK in a senior-rules under 18s competition in Köln, Germany. In the warm ups everyone was in awe of the abilities shown by the French team. They loved their Uchimata I can tell you! They were eventually winners and our team came 4th, but we had some epic battles with French, Dutch, German and other teams there. They were all quite experienced, and so were we, but the French team were such superb technicians. In my fight with my counter part in one of the French teams (they had two teams I think) it was all I could do to prevent an Uchimata Ippon, by attacking various combinations of Tai Otoshi, De Ashi Barai, Ouchi-gari and Kouchi-gari with the odd botched attempt at a drop Seoi-nage. I eventually got caught with an Osoto gaeshi counter for Waza-ari and so lost on points. However, it was a great experience and at least I avoided their devastating Uchimata which I'd seen knock someone out.

Why are the French so good at Judo? Any thoughts?
