French forces crack down in New Caledonia as death toll climbs in civil unrest

In New Caledonia, French forces have launched a major operation to restore order after violent clashes and civil unrest killed at least six people.
New Caledonia is a French territory situated in the South Pacific, off Australia's eastern coastline. The civil unrest erupted in the archipelago's capital, and French forces are trying to regain control of a road linking Noumea to the main international airport.
French military planes have been landing at Canadian airports during the weekend operation.
Heidi Petracek reports on the volatile situation.

    There have been multiple votes for independence and the vast majority of people on the island, including the Kanaks voted to stay with France in every single referendum. The rioters are a violent minority that just want violence. And the majority of the population today is French, they have every right to stay in their homes and to live in peace.

    BACKGROUND - New Caledonia's original name is Kanaky and is not located in Europe but in the Pacific Ocean near Fiji. France colonized Kanaky in order to gain control over its land, resources (e.g., nickel, agriculture), and labour. During the COVID pandemic, France wanted to hold a referendum regarding Kanaky's independence from France. The Indigenous population (the pro-Independence Kanak) asked France to postpone the referendum until pandemic impacts subsided and they could organize and educate the electorate on the referendum's options. France held the referendum despite this request and thereby maintained its domination over the Kanak people and the many non-Indigenous settlers encouraged to live there by the Government of France. More recently, France decided to unilaterally make a constitutional change that would give French citizens/non-Indigenous people who have lived in New Calendonia for 10 or more years the right to vote. This would allow the non-Indigenous vote to out-weigh the Indigenous vote and presumably give France the power to retain colonial control over New Caledonia. These actions, along with the longer history of French colonial oppression and violence against the Kanak, are what has resulted in today's civil unrest in New Calendonia. France, in response, is threatening the population with violence by sending armed forces to the small Pacific community and prohibiting the population from using popular social media app, Tiktok. Canada probably shouldn't facilitate France's military operations (as shown in the video), as Canada has committed to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

    Really - you missed out the Lapita the indigenous before the Kanaks that were 'mysteriously' eradicated from the island! There were 2 referendum before the one you mention and they both elected to stay with France. That is despite the Kanaks having 41% of the population and white Europeans only 24% (and not all of them are allowed to vote). Not all Kanaks want independence. Many have businesses and others are recipients of a regional benefits scheme that many countries would envy; all of which would suffer if France was to leave and they vote accordingly. Bending to the will of a small minority of violent nationalists might be the way business is done in your country but not in France. The rest of your note was confused victim speak that conflates a movement to restore law and order with some sort of oppression narrative. Obviously you have never had to provide for a family in such circumstances.

  • @V-vk7vo

    @V-vk7vo

    24 күн бұрын

    @frankyyaggabot6222 Your use of the terms "law and order" and "white European" are imperialist. You should learn that the term "white" isn't an actual ethnicity. The term was created by European colonizers who wished to appear as a homogeneous group (even though they were from various European ethnicities). They did this so they could appear to rival or outnumber the size of local Indigenous populations that they intended to displace, oppress, or exterminate. Also, you should know that France formally admitted to and apologized for the maltreatment of the Kanak in 2003 and 2015, and also signed an agreement and an accord in 1988 and 1998 respectively to further formalize France's need to honour the Kanak's right to self-determination and right to gain greater powers of governance over their country. I hope you're able to fully appreciate these facts.

    European colonial descendents still make up the majority of Canadians according to Statistics Canada, and there's no evidence that another ethnicity is trying to overthrow the social and economic system in Canada. Also, people from India arrived here through the Canadian immigration/government system which is still holds King Charles of England (in Europe) as its monarch. Also, French is still Canada's second official language (that means 2 European languages dominate Canada). That said, it looks like Europeans are still considered the biggest colonizers of Canada.

The Chinese aren’t like the French : if the kanaks didn’t agree for whatever reason , they will do the same like they did with the Ouigours , park them in concentration camps . Vanuatu regrets deeply its deal with the Chinese but it"s too late . Vanuatu has a huge debt towards China so Vanuatu accepted to have a harbour in deep waters for fishing boats 😁but in fact it’s for military navy . Australia and New Zealand are very well aware of the Chinese thread, they are happy that the French are in New Caledonia If something bad would happen like invasion of Taiwan , New Caledonia could be a military Place for American army like it was the case in WWII . French holdings in Africa were given over to indigenous rule in the 1950s and 60s. They have been uniformly pathetic devolving into numerous civil wars and military coups since which has caused many countries to continue to have a presence there and hundreds of NGOs both feeding, educating and providing medicines for the populaces therein. A significant number have also fled the region to Europe and other locales (11 million Africans reside in Europe as refugees). Of course one panacea is that you can continually blame the ineptitude of the governance of these countries on colonialism and rebrand it neo-colonialism. Having fallen out with the West after what for some of these countries is their 11th or 12th military junta since Independence the militaries are looking towards China and Russia to provide for them what the West provided with less scrutiny ... and so it continues!

    @@onlineonlineaccount2368 French attitudes and psychology ... for revolution. The fact that leaders of a French Colony would be educated in France is not unusual (many British ex-colony Leaders were/are educated in the UK) ... it's simply the progression of the education system. Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad all had Islamic Insurgencies that were there when France entered the region and were there when France exited. Ex-colonies of Britain that were strictly Islamic - Sudan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iraq, Yemen, ... all had the same basic issues and had not huge amounts of Aid been ploughed into some of these countries and the tacit acceptance of authoritarian regimes post-colonial times(e.g. Egypt), they would have been even bigger disasters.
