I personally wouldn’t feel bad if someone mispronounces a brand name from my country because all languages have different sounds, sounds that might not exist in other languages. You pronounce things according to the sounds you have available in your language.

Brands themselves go that way. At least in France but I think also in Germany and the UK, the Czech brand Škoda ads all say "Skoda". To my understanding the Š makes a sort of "Tch" sound, so it should be something like "Tchoda". Peugeot ads in the US (when they were still sold ) pronunced the brand name as "Poojo" changing the first syllabe. On the other hand Xiaomi here makes sure you say their brand right by having a Chinese voice reading it "correctly".

As a Swede who's interested in language most of these are easy for me. The French words are probably the least intuitive, but once ive learnt them theyre fine. The Italian words are basically just read the same in Swedish, as are German words. Honestly it's pretty easy learning Italian for me because it's pronounced so similarly. The main difference is the grammar.

I love Callie’s attitude because she’s honest about whether or not she knows the correct pronunciation of said brand. If she doesn’t know it she is not afraid of saying how we Americans would say it or better said, how we slaughter non-English words. I think that English speakers specifically from the US and the UK, tend to be quite condescending with nonnative English speakers.

thats not true at all its the opposite, here in the uk at least, there are so many europeans, middle easterns, africans and asians here that no one is condescending to nonnative english speakers, or at leats its not common, maybe theres some random asshole who is but that isnt representative of the country, if people here were condescending to nonnative speakers, we'd have to be condescending to everyone on a day to day basis and it would be exhausting a country which is condescending to nonnative speakers as a part of their culture though are the french

Fun fact: there was no such country as "Italy" until 1861. There were different kingdoms (Naples and Sicily), grand duchies (Tuscany) and even city-republics (Venice) on the Italian peninsula, but as a united country there has been "Italia" only since 1861. The modern official Italian language is strongly based on Tuscan, and is quite far for example from the Neapoletan language.

germans and french have similar pronounciations because the R sound has a common root. the Germanic R of the Franks mixed with the latin spoken by the Romano-Gaulic inhabitants to create french, so it's basically like a german speaker who spoke gaulish at home and learned latin in school. that combo gives us french.

In the USA, dropping the last syllable from Porsche is a relatively recent thing. Everyone used to say Porsch-uh with two syllables. Saying Porsh without the e was the cool slang way to say it, like saying Jag instead of Jaguar. It's just that younger people have only heard the slang way now.

Rural people have different status markers. 😂 That said, if I see “Hermès”, my first instinct every single time would be to think of the Greek god and not the French brand, which Americans pronounce “her-mees.” I am curious about the correct Greek pronunciation of that word though if there are any Greeks who could share that info?
