Interesting fact: all sensors and autopilot settings have been turned off and deactivated to allow for the police to be use the car like their standard car for take downs, bumps and tight spaces! Windows and door handles in the rear were disengaged and cannot be used because it’s where the prisoner has to be.

You know who should go electric? Mail delivery. They drive a couple of hundred miles each day, six days a week. There are a LOT of vehicles involved, and it would make both a difference and a statement if they went electric. City buses. There's another one. City buses are noisy and they, too, run a couple of hundred miles every day. Maybe there can be a Tesla bus based on the semi platform?

@@Nicksperiments The radio uses 15 amps? At first I started calculating based on your 110V standard over there, but 1800 watts simply wouldn't be feasible. So I assume you mean 15 amps at 12 volts? That's not too bad, considering the heater system for an electric car easily uses several thousand watts in the warmup process. I think I've seen my gf's 2018 Leaf use up to 4kW just for the heater when the car was cold. Not uncommon for it to use 1000 watts just for upkeep either.

With so much engine idling that emergency vehicles do it actually makes a lot of sense to use electric. Even if a police car might have 100K miles when it's out of service, it will have a lot of idling time which puts a lot more wear on the engine.

is that a J1772 port in the console at 0:33? I wonder if Tesla worked on installing a small 'accessory' battery pack that would run all the extra stuff without putting strain on the single 12v battery. Excellent interview Raj. It's interesting to hear how they had to consider things like the side impact air bags when putting in a back seat prisoner barrier.
