Freightliner EZ Pack Galion Super Hopper Rear Loader

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here is a truck that took a lot of planning and effort. Mike and I originally found this truck while driving down I-5 in february. After going to the trailer park and talking with the people in the office, we learned that the trailer park collects their own garbage. Sadly as we had a schedule we didn't get the chance to film it. Some months later though, Alex and Mike found themselves in the trailer park again early one monday morning. However the drivers and helpers wouldn't let them film until the owner of the trailer park was contacted. They ended up leaving and that was it until just a few weeks ago. I knew I would be going down to Northern California to visit some family and thought that on the way I would try and stop to film this truck. Not wanting to have the same outcome that Alex and Mike did, I called ahead to the office to try and talk to the owner. Sadly the first time I called the owner wasn't in the office, but the lady at the desk took down my name and number. That was on a thursday and I was leaving for Norcal that following monday so time was of the essence. Not hearing back from them, I called the next day which was a friday around 2 or 3. Once again the owner wasn't in but I spoke with the lady again who remembered me from the day before. She had talked to the owner and gotten his okay for me to film. She gave me all the information and routes and such. Being extremely excited to film such an old truck, I told Mike and Alex. Seeing as they were free, they made the journey up to Norcal and filmed the truck with me, and it turned out to be quite the fun little trip!
Now onto the truck. This truck was actually a custom job done by the owner of the trailer park. He bought the EZ pack and the original chassis and bought a second chassis, which so happened to be this freightliner. The owner then took the body of the EZ pack, scrapped the original chassis, and mounted it on this late 80s to early 90s freightliner. No one knows for sure if the freightliner used to be a semi that was made straight frame and no one knows what the original chassis on the EZ pack used to be. The EZ pack body was made probably in the mid to late 60s, so it definitely classifies as a "classic refuse truck". Overall this truck was extremely unique, and I ended up getting 3 total videos of this beast. The rest of the videos will be seen in a few years. Mike and Alex will have their videos to upload sometime in the near future so look forward to those! I really hope you enjoy this video as a lot of planning and effort went into it! Special thanks to the crew of the truck, Mike and Alex for the transportation, and of course the owner and lady at the trailer park for making this video possible! Enjoy!!

Awesome video!! Never seen a refuse truck chassis/body combo like this before - very unique, and probably one of the only ones. Love the classic feel to the EZ pack and its great that some are still in operation. Absolutely love how the packer works -- fascinating that it almost moves around in a little triangle. Sure don't make 'em like that anymore. In all my years watching refuse trucks I've never seen one with a sleeper cabin lol. Cool that this trailer park collects its own trash. Interesting how that guy is wearing a WM vest. I wonder where they dump? Great find once again!

Dude, you get extra milk and cookies tonight for this video. Brings back a lot of memories. I remember operating the first generation of the EZ Pack Super Hopper at a shopping mall north of Boston. I was only 15 at the time and would meet the truck in the morning. I would operate the blade while the guys loaded trash from the loading docks. The original design packed an excellent load but it had it's problems. The blade would jam at the loading edge, the metal used in the body was too soft and would tear. There was an electrical fire in the control box at the front of the body. The version you saw was the improved model. This is a great find. That truck should be in the Waste Pro museum in Sanford, FL. Terrific job man.

The "path" this packing blade takes works very similar to an older Leach design on some trucks in Keene, NH back in the early 1970's. Thanks for showing this video.

Ok, how did I just now find this??!?!?!?!?! I don't even know what to say right now I'm so stunned. Fantastic camera work, and that truck is just incredible. That body or chassis alone would have been remarkable, but they fact that they are together is mindblowing haha. Crazy to think how this truck is and that it is still in service... goes to show you they don't make 'em how they used to!Love the helper's hat and WM vest, did he use to work for them? Awesome to see it handle that container, too!!! How often do they operate this, every day or just once a week? Definitely appreciate the labor you guys put into getting this one!

I had high hopes of this truck when you and Mike and Alex posted pics, but the video was 10x more than I expected! What a cool truck! After reading about how the owner of the trailer park rebodied this himself, I wonder if he is a fellow enthusiast. How big is the route? Is garbage collected once a week? Super cool packer, usually don't find RLs too entertaining, but this was great. And man, three videos! Awesome! Had to laugh at "will be posted in a few years". Great job getting this!

Holy bloody shit!!! Check out this classic piece of machinery :O I saw Mike's pictures of this beast on Flickr and thought it was in a scrapyard or something! A completely magnificent upload right here - well done to the three of you for catching this RL in action. My heart sank for you when you said upon first visit you didn't get to video... but then I remembered I was about to watch this video, so figured things ended up playing out alright in the end :D I was looking forward to that first pack cycle and wasn't disappointed it was pack after pack afterwards... almost like the manual pick-up at the beginning was a tease before the exciting stuff haha I'm sure I read up on CRT about this body years ago, but memory is quite vague. Am I correct to say this packer runs off a single pair of cylinders and relies on the guides in the tailgate to get through the cycle? Also with the controls I'm guessing there's a button there to get the revs going, then there are two separate buttons which need to be held down constantly for the extending and retracting of the cylinders eh? The emptying of the bin at 8:40 was a bonus, honestly didn't expect it I noticed the paladin type lift too! Hard to miss the blade struggling to hit the bottom after 6:22, then it eventually just "drops" down almost effortlessly. Hmm I don't know what else to say apart from fantastic upload, liked and no doubt a favourite! Oh I'm also more and more jealous that you guys up in the US still have dinosaurs like this roaming the earth =]

+MitchellM15 haha thanks for the comment! Yes the whole tailgate/packer is run by 2 cylinders. The 2 cylinders control the packer motion then switch to lift the tailgate. And yes there is a rev button. 1 for up/down and then the other for sweet/lift. At least thats what it looks like. I have a pic of the controls on flickr. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Nice video and all that. I noticed the packer got stuck around 7:30... curious if the cylinders are just worn out, or if weak hopper compaction was a flaw of this packer design.

It's crazy to think there was a whole slate of rear load designs which never adhered to the slide-sweep design paradigm. Leach really shook things up. One obvious benefit of the track guided design is apparent right away, look at that tiny rear overhang! And to think EZ Pack rated this thing at I think 2.5 yards, and that's in the understated hopper capacities of the era rather than the blatantly optimistic ratings we see today. Being able to guide the blade over the exact path of travel you want sure cuts down on bulky tailgate structure. But of course that same advantage is this design's major downfall, confining the travel of the blade limits your ability to handle bulk, overcome jams from incompressible objects, etc. When it comes to looks the Super Hopper is no slouch, a liberal application of bracing on the packer blade makes for some serious eye candy. Just looks mean. Ditto for the body structure with it's horizontal and vertical structural members as opposed to newer bodies which increasingly have done away with the former (and in the case of the newest smooth sided bodies the later as well lol) Nice job on the shot of the ejector, it looks a lot like the packer in a Hydro side loader. EZ Pack stuck with what worked I guess. The Freightliner chassis tops off the whole wacky package. Great catch and vid Alan.

Haha yeah it's quite the unique truck. It's a great design, super simple. However I do see major downsides to this design as well. One being of which the cylinders resting in the trash. If a line breaks or anything, kinda screwed. Plus those 2 cylinders also open the tailgate so it's cause major issues if/when a line blows. But other than the hydraulics the actual design of the truck is quite simple. Very unique for sure. Glad you enjoyed it

THE TWO DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE PACKMASTER AND THE SUPER HOPPER. FIRST THE PACKMASTER HAVE A BULLDOZER BLADE, THE SUPER HOPPER HAVE A PACKER BLADE INSTEAD AS A TAILGATE COMPARTMENT. OTHER DIFFERENCE IS THE PACKMASTER WHEN TRAVEL TO THE EDGE TAKES BACK IN A S SHAPE SLOTS. THE SUPER HOPPER HAVE A ORBITAL SLOTS FINISHING WITH THE S SHAPE SLOTS. FINALLY TO ACTIVATE THE PACKING CYCLE AT THE PACKMASTER USE A SINGLE STAGE LEVER, ON THIS ONE, PRESS A BUTTON LIKE A ROLL OFF COMPACTOR. VERY EASY.
