Best thing about the freeze dryers is you can double what do you cook for dinner and then you can take half of that and put it in the freeze dryer

Worst thing about freeze dryers is that a very basic model cost as much as a 6 month round the world trip for 2.

@@nordicmind82that’s why they’re typically only worth it for companies or for people who are constantly on the trail like these two. This is their lifestyle so after doing it for years they made that big purchase to use alongside their dehydrator. I can’t imagine buying one as just a normal person lol

@@froggy5748 yeah, I love freeze dried fruit and ice cream, but I know no matter how much I buy from stores it'd take decades or more of my usual spending on it to equate to a freeze dryer. Plus the freeze dried fruits I buy are usually cheaper than buying the equivalent of fresh fruit in the store, which I'd need to buy for freeze drying anyways. Best left to professional operations or people with very outdoorsy lifestyles.
I've never hiked a day in my life but I love your content. 😩 if I ever went on a hike it'll be dedicated to you both. 😊

I can’t afford a freeze dryer, but I’m glad you two post so many recipes that can be freeze dried and/or dehydrated. Last year I started a job that gives us a one month long paid sabbatical at our three year mark, with job security when you get back. I’m already in the starting stages of planning for my first ever multiple day hike to go on for my sabbatical 🤞🏻
@shayelea

That’s awesome!! My job used to offer a 1-month sabbatical at 20 YEARS but now that I’m coming up on 20, of course they have eliminated that option.

I love your honesty. You tell us it's almost as good as fresh. There are situations where you may want to take pasta salad with you and absolutely can't and almost as good as fresh is better than none at all❤❤❤❤
You two take meal prep to the next level! Respect.
That looks amazing!!! You could mix the water and then stick it into your pack for an hour or two. Also I love reusing those Gelato containers too, they're the best and last years!

A small hint to keep your knives sharp for longer: use the non-sharp side of the knife (just turn it 180°) to push whatever you just cut off the cutting board🤗 Love your videos! Always great to get inspired🫶🏻
Super cool to see a cold prep item like this. The texture looks just the same as fresh!!
25 yrs! What a great dish.
Both you’re Smiles are So Contagious 😅
I just pre-ordered their cookbook, I am so excited to get it!! I am not a hiker, but I do like camping, and all their meals look so, SO good!!
I honestly want to make some of your recipes to keep for storm prep! I feel like this would be a lot better in an emergency than protein bars and Mac and cheese on a camp stove

You can buy premade freeze dried meals without having to buy a $5000 freeze dryer
@grovermartin6874
7 күн бұрын
@@Cooperfelts That may be. In addition to being pricey, those Mountain House et al. freeze dried packages are super salty and often contain common allergens. They often are made mildly distasteful to me because of the herbs and spices used. That's not to rationalize spending a small fortune on a freeze dryer, just pointing out a potential downside of buying the packages premade.
That must be delicious especially after a long day of hiking, but a freeze-dryer is not a small investment

Some places it's possible to rent a freeze dryer. Might be a good option for someone who is just prepping for a normal backpacking trip (or other very short-term needs).

Interested in book but all the smiles leads me to believe this is like some infomercial. I go backpacking few times a year and it’s not all smiles. You guys remind of a commercial from the 40s when everybody has a smile on their face all the time.

I found your recipe book love it thank you
I love how they went from dehydration to freeze drying
Magnificent! Just what I'm going to do next... Oh no, wait, I'm not rich enough to buy a freeze dehydrator LOL
freeze dryer is the ultimate hiker gear. beats everything else.
Oh love seeing how your freeze dryer has improved some of the cool recipes! You guys are always so awesome! 🚶♀️🚶♂️
So genius for outdoor meals, following y’all for awhile now and I love your videos. If I was ever camping even I’d try to rent one to make some meals like this. Way easier than trying to pack mostly shelf stable and then refilling cooler with ice constantly for perishable food. I always worry I wont replace the ice in time and all food will spoil

Here’s my burning nutrition question. How do you get the fat into your meals to help absorb the fat soluble vitamins? I know you bring nuts and trail mix to munch on, but are you adding fat to your meals too? I know the olives have some fat, but it’s something I’ve been wanting to ask for a while. In other words, would you bring small jars or packets of things like olive oil and nut butters to add to meals? If not, how do you account for the lack of fat on the trail?
