actually it is condenser tower, those are used to cool the steam, where isn't district heating. Those are used in coal plants too, not just nuclear. It's rare to use nuclear power to heat district water, actually don't know any. Being in power-plant last 33 years :)

@@cmulder002 Reactors are usually made with 2-3 seperate heat transfer loops. Cross contamination is possible, but highly, highly unlikely. The most pertinent safety feature is the fact that vessel water is seperate from "coolant flow" water. If fuel rods don't leak and keep their cladding (in some reactor designs), the vessel water never becomes radioactive and alarm systems monitor for such an event. In order for a cross contamination event to happen, multiple failures would have to occur.

I like what Banjie had to say about Nuclear. Lots of people are pushing for wind/solar/battery but the fact of the matter is that its thermodynamicly unrealistic. They are so dilute and would require so much infrastructure and land. Nuclear on the other hand is incredibly safe especially when you look at modern reactor designs. If we really are serious about cutting emissions, Nuclear is our only realistic ticket out.

Not correcting you, but here's some cool facts about that cooling tower stack. This is a hyperbolic cooling tower stack that utilizes natural draft primarily used to provide cold water to condensers that turn steam back into water coming from steam turbine exhaust headers. The water is cooled via air to liquid contact, which is achieved by using natural draft. The water basin and water distribution system is obviously removed. These cooling towers are not exclusively used by nuclear power production plants, but also in refineries, coal, natural gas, to name a few for a variety of cooling services. This cooling tower does not use fans, hence the reason why it's "natural draft"; cooling towers that use fans would be either induced draft cooling towers or forced draft cooling towers. They do not contribute to absolutely any air pollution, as their only purpose is to cool water, the only exception would be if there's a tube leak inside a heat exchanger that contains hazardous materials flowing within the shell side of the heat exchanger (which is extremely rare).
