FreeOK2 - Seth Andrews "Scrabble on the Space Station"

Seth was the keynote speaker at the 2012 Oklahoma Freethought Convention. His presentation takes an often humorous look at the claims of religion in the Age of Information.
This speech has been abridged from the "live" version for time and features a few extra visuals for the KZread audience. There's a brief drop-out of audio at the 45:30 mark, due to a loss of feed from the house sound system.

As a person who has struggled with abuse, depression, PTSD, and anxiety which led me to contemplate suicide I can tell you that I have never had more release from my symptoms and a better outlook on life than I have had coming out as an Atheist. It's made the world clearer, brighter, and a lot less frightening. When I was a Christian, I was so caught up in changing the world that I forgot to be a part of my own life. I love these videos and cannot thank you enough!

+xerox1959 We won't. I, for one feel a duty to the rest of the world to do this. I love my country, but I also know that we have built a terrifying military power (thanks mostly to the Christian right), and if this nation is allowed to go down the path of theocracy, or is even allowed to be dominated by the religious, the harm that the nation that I believe was founded upon the best principles so far documented by men, could be unimaginable. We in the USA owe too much to our brothers and sisters in the rest of the world to allow fanatics to do what they could do if we do not keep them in check.

Yeah, we are somehow going backwards. It is troubling... Our founding fathers had so much more sense than the people in charge here today. As absurd as it sounds, our secular government is NOT run by those with secular beliefs and ideals. It is nearly impossible for an atheist to get elected to public office, and even illegal in some places. There are public schools in this country to teach creationism in science classes. Ugh.... Never been so embarrassed for being from this country.

Seth, you are just amazing. I feel like a hopeless drooling fanboy, but I've got six years on you, supposedly that much more experience, etc., but when I look at the sheer accomplishments you've made in your life, the people you've moved, the lives you've changed, I feel underwhelmed with what I've accomplished. Yet, I feel hope for the future, and ambition, for changes for the better I might be able to affect on this world. Thanks, man. You're an inspiration.

I don't live in fear of death. Both of my parents are dead, my sister committed suicide 6 years ago, and my 3rd child died at birth. I am no stranger to death. We live, we die, we go on in the memories of those who loved us, and our children and grandchildren. I love my life, but I know it will end, and my life is not about waiting for the next one, but living this one, and doing the best I can while I am here.
