FREEOK 2013 - Lawrence Krauss: "The Greatest Story Ever Told"

On June 22nd, 2013 at Oklahoma City's Cox Convention Center, over 500 gathered for the 2013 Oklahoma Freethought Convention (FREEOK). Speakers included Sean Faircloth, Dale McGowan, Emily Boyer, Zack Kopplin, Seth Andrews and Lawrence Krauss. (Jamila Bey was scheduled but could not attend due to a conflict. She dialed into the conference A/V system, but her presentation could not be recorded for the KZread videos.)
FREEOK 2013 was sponsored by the American Humanist Association, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and Oklahoma Atheists.

That first slide... fucking hell. Horrible memories. I'm a 5 year old kid, dinosaur freak. It's history class, subject dinosaurs. I could have had a 10/10 on all questions - if I would have answered truthfully about what I know, but my parents told me to write down biblical answers, and I got a 4/10. I don't think I've ever felt more ashamed than that moment.

Its funny how that's an issue for some people now. "Academic freedom" or some such bullshit. I don't mind people holding their own beliefs but when they take a test in a class they aren't getting tested on what they believe to be true, they're getting tested on what they were taught in the class. Its a shame you were put in that position.

SAY - can I get into heaven if I've already had my 72 squeekers? i am 53 years old, I was raised southern baptist. No dancing, no drinking, no fun of any kind. I was baptist by bus. I was a rowdy child and I guess my mother needed a break. There was a church bus that stopped in front of our home on Sunday mornings. The gave me gum and drove me to first baptist church in Paris Texas. I was supposed to go to Sunday school and then children's church, but after a couple of Sundays I heard the story of Moses and the story of him sacrificing his son..... I was 7, but i know i didn't want to know about a God like this, I was truly afraid...... so I hid in the stairwell until time to get on the bus and go home....After a few months I learned to miss the bus..... at 27 I married, started having children at 34.... and started attending church again for the KIDS..... as i listened and learned nothing seemed right..... by this time I have lived in 7 different countries and 2 different states ..... it all seemed like myth, but for my wife and children I went.... was asked into church leadership, budget committee..... i listened to supposedly GOD FEARING people lie, argue, and fight over money..... and I remembered George Carlin act about GOD...... a magical man who lived in the clouds, who gave us rules to live by, and punished us with hell, but he loved us.... but he needed money..... it seemed he was not a very good money manager....... I never had believed.... so there was no loss of faith for me...... so I just gave up and became an Atheist...... but my family and friends didn't know this.... I was a closet Atheist..... I felt alone...... I now live on an island in the western Caribbean. about 6 months ago i discovered Seth Andrews, Aron RA, Richard Dawkins, Bill Nye, and and many others on KZread...... I have realized I am not alone..... the one thing I enjoyed and was missing was the fellowship I got in church...... I have now seen there are many of us, and you guys also have meetings, a social like, supporting each other learning, ect..... I am still alone. My life does not suck.... I own a beach bar and restaurant and resort..... meet 100's of people a week.... most from the Bible Belt..... each night I listen to many POD Casts..... I am now feeling good about being an Atheist..... and have been thinking about coming to some of the events. Hope to see some like minded people soon....... Many cruise ships come to our island .... regular cruises, classic rock cruses, Star-trek cruses..... I was thinking we need to have an Atheist, free thinking cruse. Just a thought..... sorry for the rambling.... its just I have never went public with these thoughts.

Thank you for sharing Craig. Fundie Christianity ruined my life. I actually read the whole book every word of which the Bible bashing preacher waved his fist in the air and screamed at the top of his voice was the word of the living God. BTW, it was Abraham not Moses that was bidden to sacrifice his son. You really are a lucky fucker. A natural born and raised hypocrite. You'll do just fine in and out of religion. Look up some of these scriptures if you ever think you or any of those around you are or ever were even vaguely Christian (it should make you feel better): Mat 6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Mat 6:31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? Mat 6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Mat 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: Mat 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 1Co 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1Co 3:12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 1Co 3:13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 1Co 3:14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 1Co 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire Mat 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me [and be a possession-less vagabond roaming the countryside, eating from farmer's fields and knocking on doors asking to be given food and shelter]. 1Co 7:1 Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Luk 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. You are alone? You have a wife and children. You, an owner of riches in a sunny location. Cry me a river and send it to me, here in rainy Kent, UK :-)

The difference betwen science and religion: When faced with the new and unknown, science says: "Hmm, I don't know, let's study it, experiment and find out the truth". religion says: "Hmm, I don't know, let's make shit up". As a result, science is pretty consistent, while different religions make completely different shit up. Yeah, the first option is hard work and not everyone is willing to do that.

Razhender Wild Well, no. They make up shit. That's what their creation stories are and things, like day and night were created *before* the Sun (Genesis), the Earth is flat, or the stars are little lights that can fall on the Earth (Revelations and other chapters), the Moon is a light source (Quoran verses) and so on. Oh, they make shit up and they're not shy about trying to promote it as "truth". :)

+lnpilot +Razhender Wild agreed but you both forget one addintional argument of religious people : unknown is scary and people want definite answers let's see how we can sue that fear to better control the people. And that's in my opinion religious is the most harmful. The parents who indoctrinate their children do it because they believe they're doing the right thing it comes from love and caring most of the time but the religious institutions do it for power.

Thank you for the compliment! Trust me I hung on for years and left the faith kicking and screaming. Reason overpowered my yearning to believe and feel "chosen" and then of course, I had to face my family who are all Christians. Fortunately, after some time they have been as understanding as I could have hoped. There are some young earth creationists maybe on the fence that will be convinced but you are right, the hardcore ones can't let go of their imaginary invisible friend.

The point of my comment was to respond to a guy who said, and I quote: "philosophy has accomplished absolutely nothing other than to justify incredibly bloody ideologies and cults. Philosophy should be in the trash bin of history right alongside cults and shamans." I'm merely trying to show to him that philosophy is, as you so well put it, an integral part of science and not a separate entity that is somehow useless.

in the situations where you would expect the speed of light to be higher or lower, its always time that gives in and bends. These are the situations where you either have one observer moving relative to another or when a gravitational field is involved. in the first case, time passes slower for you if you are moving faster. in the second case, time moves slower when you are in a stronger gravitational field.

What you're talking about with the fish is called REFRACTION, passing through the water slows light down (light travels through air faster than in water) and 'bends' it making the fish appear somewhere else. It's actually still in the same place. When light travels through a vacuum (space) it's constant and always moves at 186,282mps. When you look at something in space a billion years old, you are looking at the past, because it has taken the light a billion years to get here

Well do not feel too hurt about it. It takes people like Krauss to create these ideas and test these hypothesis that make my brain hurt, but I would never know about it if not for people like yourself that have the talent to present it in a manor that I can access and digest.

nice... :) Glad I looked down here... it's amusing how many responses there are, just like the one you submitted which are meant to be serious responses to videos just like this on...

"(if speed is constant than time varies, if time is constant it is speed that changes with reference to a moving object)" Thats it, thats the main thing that is so hard to get your head around. As it turns out, for example when experimenting with ultraprecise clocks, its always time that will go at different speeds, and that fixes everything. For example, for particles in the LHC, moving at 99.9999% of the speed of light, time is slowed almost to a complete standstill.

I love that he's out there doing his thing, I didn't know that. I still wish he had a more effective/measured approach when one on one with religious types. Easier said that done I'm sure.
