Freeman tweaked Clarke Original tin whistle vs. untweaked compared and showing how I tweak them

The Clarke Original can be a wonderful whistle if it is set up correctly. Out of the box it takes an unwieldy amount of air and the sound is unfocused, with a lot of air noise. When they're well tweaked, they give a haunting, ethereal sound that can be beautiful to hear.

I wish I could have you as a teacher... your just so calm and so calm at explaining things. Everybody's in such a damn big hurry these days. And can't hold a conversation. Wish you was my grandpa lol

Perfect! Another way to work on this specific model, instead of flattening the air channel and the blade (labium), would be to completely redo the block following the same rounded geometry as the channel. Of course, this takes more time and hopefully the block will come out easily. I basically follow the logic of the original baroque recorders where the block, channel and blade are all rounded. I would like to try as I have some practice in optimising recorders and building and modifying wooden blocks and then, I would like to try and see the difference with a synthetic block. Thanks, you are a legend!

I'm not touching my Clarke original, lest I ruin it. It is the best sounding whistle of all my cheapies--and not-so-cheapies. I don't find the amount of air needed to be a problem, but then I was the kid who could hold my breath underwater longer than my friends, and I had eight years of choral training in school, so I know how to "breathe."

I have this whistle in both D and C. Hardly ever play them, precisely for this reason, so definitely going to try this tweak. Btw, Ashokan Farewell is an ideal tune to explore a whistle. It has pretty much every single note from bottom D to high C nat. And there's even the F nat in the B part. And all this while enjoying a beautiful composition.

This is fantastic! Thanks Jerry! I just bought one and tried to tweak it. I had it good sounding and then kept messing with it and it got worse haha. I’ll have to try your tape trick b/c I’ve definitely marred mine☹️

Interesting to listen to the difference of the tweked whisltle. Since I have also large recordes to play I did not experience difficulties of air. The sound of wind makes the difference for me of the tin whistle to a recorder. Anyway, I adore the possibility of doing rework on a commercial instrument to make it fit to your own requrements.

Curiosity got the best of me, so I purchased a Clarke Original today. Takes twice to three times the breath to get through simple tunes as on other whistles. Instead of bending the sound blade with plyers, I used sticky putty to reshape which works.

Why don’t you get the makers to make the whistle the way it should be saving all that tweaking sounds a sensible idea.

Freeman doesn't sell his tweaked whistled anymore apparently which is a shame since I heard so many good things about them but I think the Whistle Shop sell their own tweaked Clarke original whistles so perhaps that would be a viable option for those who still want to use the Clarke original.

I got two Clarke tin whistles. One to give away what I did not do yet, like that one sown here, the other one is just silver-grey. Yours maybe original.

The original one out of the box sounded like a sow’s ear, it was awful, and the so-called tweaked one was just as bad. It just sounded bad in a different way. Why bother with these whistles that are obvious junk? I have Generation whistles that sound better than a Clarke, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. If you want to play the whistle and you want to have any hope of making a sound that is pleasant, then you have two choices. Either buy your whistles from a decent reputable maker, or learn how to make them yourself. Dont waste your time trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. I have high whistles that I made of copper plumbing pipe and low whistles from PVC electrical conduit that sound far superior to these tweaked Clarke, and I have good whistles from good makers. If you are trying to learn to play on a crap instrument all you will get is frustration and you wont get very far in your learning. Dont waste your time.
