In school for game design, I was taught none of this... mostly because the school never prepared any of us for working anywhere but a full-time job at a company, be it an indie studio or a AAA one. From all my networking and chatting with others, that seems to be the case with them as well, and it's largely unexplored from an academic and education viewpoint. I'm actually quite annoyed that I was educated with the assumption that I would end up in a studio of any kind, because honestly, post-graduation, I found myself wanting more and more to work with a small indie team, rather than at a studio or full-fledged company. I'm going in raw, but this video seems to offer great advice. I think the only exception is the time-estimate rules. Telling a superior or boss that X takes more time than it does, just in case, as opposed to telling them best-case scenario as the default.

As someone that does freelancing for a living I would never recommend leading with the best case scenario when it comes to quoting the time it will take to do something. If you feel you must give the best case then give a range like 1 to 2 weeks. Then if you finish in one week you’ve kept your word and the client is happy. If you run into unforeseen problems, and you will at some point, and it takes 8 or 10 days you’ve still kept your word and the client is happy

@@jameswright1788 Exactly! I even did computer repair contracting for awhile for extra cash, and the elation on a client's face when I finished a "4 hour job" in 1-2 hours was just something else. I think that learning to over-estimate is one of the best skills I learned in the game dev program, even if they didn't prepare us too well for what might happen if we *don't* get a AAA job.

I would like my starting point to be a small job and do my hobbies in my spare time, to over time turn them into full time job independently. So I could get an average pay but still earn extra on the side doing some freelancing with less stress and worry.

This is epic content! A great conversation about value, cost, and perception.

I struggle a lot with this. I calculate my hourly pay and think "That's not a lot, and I don't really want to do this project", but thinking about the value I can add to the project (as in quality), really is a good tip to think about. It's still very "abstract" how much "quality" I can add to the project, though. I mean, I've worked with another programmer once who asked for a lot of money, and his code was... Pretty bad. I knew I could do much better than what he did, but I felt like I was asking for too much (which was more than my current salary)> There's also the fact that I see like, how much a programmer makes outside of my country and it's like, 4x times what I make, and I feel like this is really unfair, but if I ask for the same price, It's almost guaranteed I'll get rejected.

i'm in go(o)d hands since yesterday. Watching almost all your videos in zen mode, with a cleaner mind at the end of each of them. The topic here applies to any freelance job such as Archviz, word by word!

Where do you guys go when looking for work? I am a CS and game design student looking to hire industry talent to learn from since schools barely scratches the surface. But all the sites and discord servers I’ve tried have yielded very few results .

Is there game engine that allows AI to create games for you without coding by simply using voice. You know what I mean. Star Trek holodeck. ' Computer make existing baseball game.". Bam. Finish.
